Anyone ever done it?
Put together a bolt gun using a BMG M1919A4.
A friend of mine has one built on a Mauser action. It shoots sub moa. He was telling me that these barrels were made to very tight tolerances and are chrome lined. If this is so would this barrel not be a good choice for an inexpensive build? These barrels new in wrapper can be had for $125

Does anyone have a source of info on where and how these barrels were made and tolerances?

Howdy! You're in luck,I built that one and several more like it.The barrels to use are Israeli .308 barrels, they are almost always new and shoot awesome. There is a very specific way to fit them and I would be glad to discuss it with you just PM me and we can exchange numbers.I don't know which of my rifles your refering to but one belongs to my friend R Garner,we call it the Green Monster and it also has one of my chassis systems.Tupelo police have one that I fitted to a Ruger 77 action that they confiscated, that thing is crazy accurate even with good surplus ammo. There is a 16" on a Swede commercial action and I have a couple.I even helped a buddy fit one to a MAS 36 of all things.Holler at me and we'll get you fixed!

PS:After veiwing your profile and seeing you are in LE I'm almost sure your talking about Garner!I've built a lot of weird stuff for that red headed SOB!Garner's a stand up guy.Hell we all need to get togather and shoot my 50BMG that I designed and built.

Punkin head. Yep it is his rifle that I am talking about. I really like that chassis, looks like you were several years ahead of the game as far as Aluminum chassis design.
I'll shoot you a pm.

I used to know an old gunsmith in IN, that did just what your asking. He converted M98's into pretty nice LW sporters in .308Win using Israeli MG barrels. They were very nice and all shot right at 1moa (5-shot). Never seen one on a precision rifle.

A friend of mine was at the May 15th match out at TVP, apparently one of the guys was shooting one of those barrels in 300WM quite successfully on the Intimidator course. I've never seen one in person, but that seemed like a good enough test of the application, FWIW.

That is my rifle. That thing has been reliable since the beginning. My suggestion-do it. I figured I would not be out much when I did it. I had the riflesmith screw a Harrels brake on the end of it. It is on a Winchester long action. Bedded in a McMillan A4. It has done well for me.

As I already wrote before most of our rifles here are Mausers with MG 7.62 barrels and they shoot great just do it
One more thing the steel on those barrels is really though and it will take some time to make a nice contour.

Good luck

My friend in MD. has one a mauser action with an israeli barrel. got the barrel mail order out of NJ. i think. He made his own stock for it and it still shoots now like it did 14 or 15 yrs ago. We have shot every type 308 we could find out of it and it just keeps on ticking.

Re: Browning MG 7.62 barrel for a bolt action build?

Hey bud. That will work perfect. The best way to do this is with the Swedish 8x63 barrels for their variant of the 1919 Browning.Sarco has them new for 28.00 and they are awesome. You just cut the original threads off and fit and chamber the barrel. If you have a 8mm barrel already you have to sleeve the threads to keep the chamber. When you get a minute complete your profile.

Andy has a good website about the 8mm's.
He is an engineer and a nice guy.

this is the barrel i'd like to use http://www.ammunitionstore.com/products/8mm-Barrel-1919A4-Browning-Machine-Gun-US-Mfg-New.html
but a 8x63mm sounds interesting </div></div>
That barrel will work fine.It is not chrome lined but you will have to sleeve the treads to use the chamber. The 8x63 swede barrels that Sarco has are great and you simply thread and rechamber to 8x57/8mm Mauser like useing a blank.Considering the cost of that 8mm 1919 barrel and the large dia you will be happier with the Swede. The Swede contour gives a good heavy barrel as is or you can turn it down with far less machining than the standard 1919 barrel. You will want to rechamber to 8mm Mauser as the 8x63 brass is expensive to make and the dies more so.If I can help just holler at me bud.

Yes.The Israeli barrels have a chrome chamber and bore, you want to keep them intact.Just give me a call at the number I PMed to you or PM yours and I will explain in excruciating detail how to do this.I have built alot of rifles like this and if you stick to my instructions it will work fine.I'm sorry if that sounded conceited but I don't want you to get hurt.

Re: Browning MG 7.62 barrel for a bolt action build?

Well, screw it I got a barrel and will try this.

I got a new Izzy barrel made in '79, rear says 7.62, yeckel schmeckel, some kind of concentric circles (2), looks like air gauged at '0' (if similar to FAL barrels).

Front says 'This end towards Gaza'. Go figure.

Chamber is not, I repeat not, chrome lined (cold blue test). Barrel does not look to be lined either.

I will be getting a reamer and setting chamber in, and threading barrel OD. No sleeving.

Howdy!I'm glad you are trying this, you will like it.All of my Israeli barrels are chrome chamber and bore, but that is great if your's isn't.I guess there are several types over the years.I have a chrome lined .303 barrel for the British aircraft version of the 1919 BMG that I'm going to have fitted to an P14 Enfield action and see what I get.Good luck and would like to see it when done.
