First 25 laps are finished,

Three wide, and left side bump drafting leads to an 8 car wreck. So new format are definitely changing the way the Daytona 500 might look.

They are stacked up and packed up, and are not closing as fast, so we'll see how it plays out.

    50 laps to go...

    Re: Bud Shootout !

That was an awesome save, gotta give a ton of credit for that..

Well that wreck took out some good cars, Harvick, Jr, out.

Right now it is looking like McMurray, Gordon, and maybe Johnson will get in it, but I suppose still anyone's race to win.

    Re: Bud Shootout !

I think KB's personality is lacking but he is probably the most talented driver on the track right now. Those saves were amazing! I think the only one who is close is Stewart.

KB is talented like Waltrip and Earnhardt Sr. were.

I will admit I don't watch as closely as I did in the 80's and 90's... it has been a little boring in the last few years.

The two best drivers I've ever seen are both dead now (Earnhardt Sr. and Senna). Racing hasn't been the same for me since they are both gone.

Senna was F1 and that is fun to watch because they also turn right. I'm not talking racing in general, just NASCAR.

That being said, I don't watch much F1 either.

    Re: Bud Shootout !

Hopefully they get back to the "rubbin is racin" format this year and the let guys drive. + 1 on the NASCAR hasn't been the same since #3 burned in

    Re: Bud Shootout !

F-1 is fun to watch through turn one... and then the possibility of seeing a pass goes down exponentially. It wasn't always like that back in the Senna/Prost/Mansell days.

People watch NASCAR because there is passing on almost every lap. From the looks of things in the Bud shootout there will likely be 20+ different leaders in the 500 this year. It's fun to see your favorite car make it to the front even if it is for only one lap.

You missed the entirety of last season did you? The whole season decided on the last race!

I followed formula one for a decade and a half and you summed it up. Formula one is 1/4 winning in qualifying, 1/4 in the pits,1/4 with the $$ spent prior to the season and 1/4 in the race.

There is probably more passing in two laps of Nascar than a F-1 race.

    Re: Bud Shootout !

Kyle Busch has 25 horsepower in his ass. I have been watching NASCAR racing for many years and he is indisputably one of the most talented drivers to ever press an accelerator pedal. He has repeatedly demonstrated amazing car control and absolute fearlessness in NASCAR’s top three series and administered several resounding butt-kickin’s to some of the best. Now, with that out of the way; Hell no I am not a Kyle Busch fan and consider him one of the most incredible flake’s that has ever been on the racetrack. Will he ever be able to control his temper and handle the pressure of a top tier driver? Time will tell. I just gotta give credit where credit is due. The kid can drive the snot out of a racecar. Johnny. It's a Southern redneck thing that has evolved. If you don't cook out or drink beer or understand that shoes are to be worn only in winter then you might not see why we like watching cars turning left, nonstop. Kind of reminds me of cutting grass. So instead of that I watch the honey Badger do it. Then I move the IROC Z28 camaro to another part of the yard so it can kill the grass there. I will go outside and take pictures if you dare me to.

Well, that's why I don't watch F1 either, but even though I'm sure NASCAR has a lot more going on than meets the untrained eye, I still think F1 takes 1000 times more talent, which could be entertaining to watch in itself. I mean, just going around in a big circle, sometimes every turn seemingly exactly the same, seems a little pointless, overly repetitious, and redundant after 500 laps. Seems like they could cut it down to like 100-150 and it would be the same thing. It's one thing if you're going for endurance, but then go all the way like the 24hour le mans or something.

    But what do I know.

Better watch out. Honey Badger doesn't give a shit.

And yea, I know it's a southern thing. I grew up in Philly, so I really wouldn't know. However, I do live in West Virgina now, and I also like to drink beer and cook out, and shoot the shit out of things, and big honkn' lifted trucks,......but turning left 500 times still puzzles me.

    Re: Bud Shootout !

Every time I see or hear the obligatory “They just go ‘round and ’round” comments I have “never understood” it either.

I think in many cases it has to do with geography and demographics………. That is, some guys grew up in more urban environments and played stick and ball sports at a park, and some folks grew up in a more rural setting and were involved in other – and sometimes more mechanical type activities. Not to say they cannot be a crossover for each. I played basketball as a school lad and have been to major league stick and ball sporting events and they are exciting for what they are.

For the most part, throughout the 60’s – 70’s and 80’s in NC it was all about Nascar racing and college basketball. In later years, the NBA, NHL, and NFL appeared in the Carolinas and have their following. I grew up in rural NC and lived approx 3 miles from an active Nascar track. As a youngster in the early 1970’s, when I would hear a car on the track I would hop on my bike and hustle down to the speedway. As a local, I knew the guys at the track and would easily go in and watch teams practice, walk through the pits, and I met many of the sports stars “back in the day”. Throughout my teens through my 40’s I have attended many races including, Charlotte, Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, Bristol, Darlington, Daytona, Talladega, etc. I have several friends who work for race teams in the Mooresville nucleus of shops that are fabricators, suspension specialists, and machinists. I have family members that race in Nascar sanctioned events today. Although hard to comprehend by some of the youngsters, I listened to races on the radio (OMG!) prior to events being televised back in 1979-80. So yeah, I guess you could say I am a bit biased in favor of the sport.

For those that are not a fan, you have likely never been to an event. Go to Bristol, or Charlotte, or Daytona or Talladega. The atmosphere before a race is electric. It is a whole weekend event. On race day, let’s say you are seated midway up on the frontstretch……………On the superspeedways, the field will rumble by for a couple pace laps while all the fluids get up to temp and the drivers tighten down their harnesses; the pace car peels off and the noise level quadruples as the green flag flies. 175,000 people are standing and screaming their lungs out. You watch the pack head off into turn 1 and go up on the banking. You now see only the top view or roofs of the cars. As they drop down off of turn 2 the speed builds and the RPM’s increase and you can visibly see the acceleration as they roll down the backstretch. The pack slams into the banking in turn 3, you see the g forces load the suspension and the cars “squat” as they rotate through 3 into turn 4. The 900 HP engines are now up to full song and as the pack comes off 4 they thunder by you at 200mph, the grandstands literally shake and vibrate, the smell of racing fuel fills your nostrils ,and the sound is like nothing you have ever heard. The sensation of speed is real and you absolutely cannot believe that guys have the balls to do what you are witnessing. I promise you – it is an incredible rush!

Go take a tour at one of the team’s shops. The level of engineering and specialization is astounding. The CNC equipment utilized by the engine shops make gun making look, well, elementary. Engine dynos, transmission dynos, four post suspension dynos,.....it is amazing. It ain’t Bubba Joe’s Chevy with a set of headers and a Holley carb anymore. This is $mega$ bucks racing.

F1? Hell, there are more lead changes in a Daytona race that an entire season of F1.

    Re: Bud Shootout !

There is nothing like hearing 40,000+ horsepower scream by at the start of a race! I get chills just thinking about it. May have to make the May race in CLT now.

By the way, I grew up near the Rockingham track. I used to go to most of the Bristol (my favorite), North Wilkesboro (not on the circuit anymore but another favorite), Charlotte, and Rockingham races up until about 1995.

The reality is it's not that they are just going around in a circle. These guys are looking to get deeper into a corner to gain 2 hundreths of a second to set up pass 2 laps away. I agree it's very subtle but there is that going on on almost every lap with every car. The distance is a reliability test carryover from when equipment would break in the last 100 miles... you still see breakage but nothing like it was back in the 70's and 80's. The equipment has gotten so much better that I think they would have to extend the races to 1000miles to have reliability be a part of the winning equation again.

And if all of that doesn't interest you, there is always plenty of beer and pretty girls in tight jeans walking around.
