I need to get a scope for my sons .243 that I got him for Christmas and need some advice. I only have $100 to spend on it at this time. In this price range I can pick up a Vortex crossfire 3X9, Cabellas Alpha rifle scope, or Mueller 3X10 extreme. From reading the reviews it seems to me they are hit and miss. So is there something else out there that I should look at? As much as I would like to save up for a better quality scope I don't want to miss the oportunity to get him shooting.

Re: budget youth scope

I say wait a few more weeks and get a nice Redfield 2-7 or 3-9. I have Redfields on my hunting rifles and they are great. Go on down to Cabelas or Gander and take a look at your choices and the Redfield side by side. You will be surprised at how much brighter the Redfields are compared to those Chinese scopes. Then come back and order it from Trevor and his crew at Optics Planet (that's where I got both of mine).

Re: budget youth scope

centerpoint 4-16 for 70.00 at walmart.

yeah i know a "walmart scope" but i have used them on my .22lr and .22mag.

the intent when i bought this scope was to use it as a holdmeover scope until i can get more $ to put a better one on, but i've used them for hunter class silhouette shooting where you are constantly adjusting, i shoot from 25 to 200 yards with the .22lr (constantly adjusting) - good return to zero. no reason for me now to replace it.

on the .22mag it's been through rain , heat, snow, ice, cold, dusty environments and it still works great after 3+ years.

it's probably the best "cheapie" scope i've ever had and have never had a problem with them. it has an ill. mildot reticle, 4-16X, come with flip up scope caps, and rings. throw the rings away and get another set as they suck. it also has an adjustable 40 mm objective, and a dedicated ocular lens focus.

the scope is pretty clear up to about 15X, which is unusual for a under 100.00 scope. at my local range, there's a guy that's constantly buying / selling rifles. he uses on of these as a jumper scope to see if he likes the rifle. he put it on everything from a .204 ruger to .3006 and has not had problems with it.

i think the newer versions have changed the turrets (they should have left them alone)

out of all the economy scopes i've had, this one and several tasco models are the only two that have not gone bad on me. alot of guys are running these on their rimfires as they are affordable and have many user friendly features, and others have them on their centerfires. i have not heard of any of them going bad or having problems.

i've had several BSA's, i'd stay clear of them they will fail in a few years even with light use.

bushnell trophy also seems to be an ok budget scope.

simmons (old ones) aren't too bad, the new ones suck.

barska are hit and miss.

i haven't used a leaper's / utg scope, but they look to be the same thing as the centerpoint mentioned above and may actually be ok.

i've heard great things of mueller scopes, which is going to be the one that's going on my next thing (8-32 target). i've looked through a few, they are super clear and bright.

Re: budget youth scope

I just so happen to have a Redfield 2-7x33 listed for sale in the classifieds. Check it out if you'd like, and make an offer. It seems to be a decent scope to get shooting, but I just am want more power.

Normally, I'd recommend a FFII and I know the 2-7x35's were on sale a few weeks ago for $99 at Grafs, but I'm not sure if they still are or not.

Re: budget youth scope

Thanks guys, slowr1der I think I'd like to get him something along the lines of a 3X9, but I think I have a friend that has a 7x scope, I'll track him down and look through it and get back to you.
