Building an action

I had the intention to assemble a new rifle but due to various reasons i did not get the Surgeon action I planned to base it on.
So decision was made to make My own.

Features i wanna try!
1. Integral picrail (possible 17mm Tikka/TRG rail instead)
2. Rear locking lugs to make a shorter bolt throw and ability to feed short fat rounds that usually are difficult
3. Switch barrel

So here is start!
I make all in manual conventional machinery just because of fun

There is no plan to ever produce this (that doesent mean it not will happend) but the Hunting rings will be produced.

This projekt is just play and fun

Whether it is for play or for production...that is awesome keep the photos, work and commentary coming! Are there other rear-locking lug receivers out there? What about receivers with front and rear lugs? Would this be overkill?

Steyr SSG69, Remington 788, Schultz o Larsen DL65 and DL68, Lee-Enfield, Sauer (colt) modell 90.

Nope front and rear locking lugs removes all smart things by using rear locking lugs as that will force me to extend the bolt travel with about 2/3" and make feeding of difficult rounds impossible.

Spuhr, looking good. I like your concept of the rear lug action. I have always admired the 788 as it was a sleeper here in America for accurate factory rifles. Along with that I have always wanted to take a SSG69 cut the barrel out and thread the action so it could easily be rebarreled. I think there are some very accurate designs with the rear lug actions but I also there are some problems that come along with the system. First the locking lugs have to come out of the action when cycling which opens them to a larger chance of being fouled and having a stoppage from debris. And second (which is more theoretical) is that having the locking lugs farther away from the chamber the case is not as supported due to bolt alignment from either flex or lack of support in the race way. This second one I have mixed thoughts about, I suppose I could see how it can happed but don't really believe it. I too am looking forward to your finished product! How many lugs are you going with and in what arrangement?

I have several receivers that I made and are now built into rifles from 260 Rem to 50 BMG The last operation I would do was cut the tenon thread in the receivers due to distortions from metal removal like ejection port, magazine opening. What material are you using? What will the finished hardness be?

Semihardened Uddeholm Impax, it's a 4140 with tighter tolerances.

Its ok if I have to recut the thread and cylindrical surface as no barrels are ready.
So i just check straightness when magcut and ejection port and rest of The outside is done.

Please, build the action for 6.5x55 size.

Also suggest side mounted mag, ala Sten/FG42/Keppler bolt action, solid bottom to make space for an Anschutz trigger.

Jbell; the SSG69 P4 has a threaded barrel. I'm seriously thinking about converting one to 6xc and AI mags in CDI bottom metal. This would be the ultimate rapid fire bolt action rifle.

Spuhr, when you say short fat rounds are you referring to the 6mm Benchrest and it's wildcats?

The action can be bedded in the stock like a BR rifle with a single shot action. The action itself can be very short/compact and still have space for an Anschutz trigger. Think size like Steyr L or M with Annie trigger.

I have seen a Steyr L converted to 6.5x55 with Steyr M mags and bottom plastic. The Steyr L is by far the leightest and most compact action that can be used with AI mags. CDI SSG69 bottom metal is dropin.

Why the integral rail? I know Surgeon does this, but couldn't you get the best of both worlds by machining a wedge-type key/cleat into the top of the receiver with a corresponding cut out on the bottom of the rail? Then you could remove/replace as needed? Say you decided you need 20 moa instead of zero, etc? Or it gets damaged?

I cannot see any reason for changing the rail. I make over 60 models Of talical mounts and in 34mm alone we make 0,20,30,40,45 moa mounts, we will soon start making 10 and 62 moa mounts to.


So in My opinion integral rail is one thing less that can cause problems

Torf I do understand the idea behind a side mag but the gun will get clumsy as i see it, so i probably pass on that one

It might be a bit more clumsy but you can hide a 10 shot mag under the parallax knob on a Henny 8)

Seriously, with a rear locking bolt the mag opening and ejection port can be symmetrically located in the receiver. Looking from behind the ejection port can be at between 1 and 3 o'cløck and mag opening between 7 and 9 o'clock.

I so wish I could have the knowledge and tools for such a project. So when you make your bolt handle, can you throw turn me one while the lathe is warmed up . Been wanting a stainless bolt knob hollowed for some time. Not too many offering them in stainless.
