WTF!!!??? I bought a set of Butler Creek caps for my NF scope. The eye piece cover works well, but the objective cover is a POS! The cap will not stay closed. I went back to Gander Mountain, and bought another one after I returned the first one. The same problem with the second one. So I called Butler Creek up, and they sent me a new objective cap. Guess what? Same thing as the first two..

Is this what to expect from Butler Creek? I dont care for the Bikini cover that came with the NF scope, but it looks like I may have no choice.

Any ideas on how to get the Butler Creek caps to work?

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. They suck. Wrap a piece of duct tape around the inside of the cap; then it will fit snuggly.

Edit: oops, solution to wrong problem. They suck trying to get them to stay closed too.

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why does everybody with a NF insist on using these pieces of crap when NF's ship with very nice bikini covers? Hell I buy NF bikini covers to put on non NF scopes because they're so nice.

If you want something that stays attached to your scope zip tie it to the tube and rock on. The NF bikini cover is just as fast if not faster to get off than BC covers that can often be hard to open, and really no slower to put back on.

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bc eye covers don't work well with nightforce, i've seen a lot of broken ocular covers, and the objectives don't get along well with butler creek sizes. i try to get people to use scope coats or the bikini's with a little para cord to keep them attached to the scope

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand what you are saying. Ive heard of the ziptie to the tube method for the bikini cover. I may go that route after all. Hell, I dont want to get laughed at while at the range for having a $7 POS on a $1800 scope

Does anyone know if there is an glass lens protector for the objective lens? I know Leupold makes them for their MK4 scopes, but I have not seen anything for Night Force. Any ideas?

Thanks again

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the set i bought for my mark 4 are perfect.

the set for my nightforce as absolute JUNK> they did'nt fit properly, then when i tried to take them off they broke...

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to clarify-
Is there a glass lens protector that screws into the sunshade or objective end of the lens? I know Leupold makes them for their MK4 scopes, but I have not seen anything for Night Force. Any ideas
Thanks again

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no problems on my sightron. one thing I did notice is that tighter is better. Get one size down and dip the cap in hot water for 5 minutes to soften it up. Try that and see what happens.

Even if you get a good set they will still usually split on the cap up by the hinge after you flip them open a good bit. I've completely given up on the BC flip ups.

Nobody makes any I'm aware of. I'm not a fan of those Leupold caps either, anything that isn't attached to the rifle is prone to loss and its also very easy to cross thread those fine threads and mess them up. Rubber Bikini covers remain the best way to protect your glass.

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leupold make some aluminum ones that have a magnet in them which I bought to put on my Mark 4 because the plastic objective lens one wouldn't stay shut. I'm sure they'll fit any scope and you could just remove the Leupold badge so as not to contaminate the night force ;-)

They were $40 for either end of the scope.

I don't know of any glass lens protectors, but I like to use ARD's for that same purpose to protect the lens of my NF scopes. They do reduce the light just a little, but not really enough to notice except at dusk and dawn, but you can remove them pretty quickly since they just thread into place instead of the long sunshade.

Here's what I use: Tenebraex Killflash ARD

They are relatively expensive though...

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read posts in defence of these POS's. Apparently some have had better esperiences with them than I have had. Just because something isn't expensive to replace is no excuse for producing junk. Bikini covers for me...

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So just to clarify, is this just a NF issue? Cause I have these BC caps on 6 different (cough) non NF (cough) scopes. Never had one break or crack. They do a good job of keeping the rain off the lens in the PNW too. I could have been lucky and bought all the good ones though. Flame on,,,

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No this is a problem with BC flip ups, how could one scope with properly fitting caps cause them to fail?

I've never had them fail on a NF because I've never used them on a NF since they come with a great bikini cover from the factory. I've broken them on S&B's, USO's, Leupold's, SS's, and many other scopes in the same way. It all has to do with how much you use them, if you take your rifle to the range once a month or so you may never have a issue, but if you shoot a lot and are opening and closing them you'll have no problem breaking them within a couple months of use. I got to the point that I would buy 3 sets for every scope, carry a extra set with me all the time and order new ones as I break them. Then I realized I can use NF bikini covers on anything 50MM or larger so that's what I do and I switched to the BC bikini cover for everything smaller. I've never had a problem with the NF bikini's even stretching them out on some long large objective scope, and I've snapped one BC bikini cover out of about 20 and it snapped the first time I stretched it out to put it on the scope.

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have ~ 50 scopes, and got a wild hair to buy Bultler Creek caps for all of them.

It was a ordering nightmare, as it is not easy to match up model numbers with eye piece or objective outside diameter. It felt like a million scopes, given my poor administrative skills.

It was a split order between suppliers SWFA and Optics Planet.

Optics Planet never has in stock what they say they have in stock.

Half of them fit and looked like they would work.

All of the objective covers used in the field have failed.
Most of the eyepiece covers used in the field are still working.

Sounds like you bought the wrong size Butler Creek Objective Flip Open. A tight fit is good, but there is tight, and there is too tight. When a cover fits too tight the area where the "lid" snaps onto the main portion of the cap stretches out-of-shape and the "lid" no longer fits squarely. The result is often a "lid" likes to pop open.

You need to measure, or re-measure - the O.D. of the objective bell as accurately as possible, then order the closest size I.D. BC Objective that is larger than the measured O.D. of the objective bell. If the closest BC Objective I.D. size is larger than the objective bell's O.D. by more than 1/64", order the closest I.D. size to the measured O.D. of the objective bell.

Advice is sometimes given to heat tight-fitting BCs' in hot water, then stretch them on. While this works to get the covers on, as I mentioned earlier it can also stretch the area where the "lid" snaps onto the main portion of the cap out-of-shape. The result being a lid that likes to pop open. Good luck.

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Buttler Creek cap on the ocular side of my NF just broke today, piece of shit!

It never really worked great so I think I'll go a size up and do the tape trick.

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are kinda of POSs. What I've found to work pretty well on the obj cover is to cock it on the scope. Put it on as far as u can get it and then pull out on the top. I know it's a half ass fix but it's worked for me.

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both of my Butler Creek covers broke off while I was shooting the Mammoth Sniper Challenge in January. They don't hold up well in cold weather. I do have a NF scope.

Re: Butler Creek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why can't anyone make some GOOD covers kinda like the leupolds but with perhaps O-rings to snug the cover on instead of threading. I would definitely like some aluminum covers to replace the unreliable Butler Creeks I have.
Maybe someone does make them and I just don't know about them.

I would buy them if someone made a batch. Something like the Leupold MK4 caps that screw on and use magnets to keep closed. O ring seals would be ideal and aluminum construction for sure. Someone has to have the skills to make these and I think they would sell like hotcakes. Where I live, it rains almost every day, I need a set that works!!

Re: Butler Creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya gotta watchout for the inside of the butler Creek Objective lens cap. It seems at first glance like it is dull and will not create a shine reflection but upon further inspection, there is a ring around the inside that is friggin reflective! Make sure you spray t dull. I almost learned the hard way. As a sidebar, I think the Butler Creeks are really cool if you dont, you know, work with your rifle or nothin.
