Buying a POF

I think I've decided that the .308 POF 20" barrel is my next rifle. I've only bought 5.56 AR's so this will be my first real expensive (relatively speaking) rifle. Any advice on how to proceed? I don't see any hide sponsors in the left hand pane that sell these rifles. I have seen a few on gunbroker for a decent price.

Any advantage to ordering from the factory?

What if any mods are typical for these out of the box? I fully believe in shooting the rifle before I do any upgrades but am just curious as to what people would change on it if they could.

If I really like the new IOR scopes but am concerned about the limited mil adjustment, should I look harder at the Larue with the built in cant or will I be alright with a one piece Larue mount with the 20moa? I think if the Larue was about $500 cheaper I would buy that one instead but from what I've read the POF is a pretty impressive rifle for a little less money.

What are the typical wait times from the factory? I am looking to buy in the next 6 weeks since I will be moving and want to buy it after the move is complete instead of shipping it, so I can definitely wait.

Any other suggestions or ideas?

Re: Buying a POF

There's lots of info and supporters for POF on this site so you're in good company. I've fiddled around with both the 14.5", 16", and 20" versions of the POF308. Try to hold one before you go with the 20". I ended up liking the 16" best of all in terms of balance and pointing. I think Frank did some testing of the POF 308s when they first came out and made a video of it. Check it out if you get the chance.

Re: Buying a POF

I'm in Poulsbo Jason. Just updated my profile to reflect.

I shot a PM to Scott.

Thanks Bubba. I would love to hold one but not sure I'll get the chance. If it's too heavy that's a good reason to buy the smaller size and have them both! We'll see what the wife says about that...

Looking for LL's video now.

All interested, I just happen to be a POF dealer located in Pullman, WA. If you have one closer, by all means, but I'd be glad to help. Don't know what the "rules" here for other companies so I'm trying not to step on any toes. Feel free to check out www.PalouseOpS.com

BTY, I've also had my eye on my own 20" .308 from POF. I'd like to hear more what folks think.

Re: Buying a POF

Ordering direct from POF is an easy option if you are on good terms with a local FFL. If you don't want to go that route, there are several dealers that are reputable and regularly stock POF rifles.

Rainier Arms has them for $2499 and they are in stock ready for immediate shipment. http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1875

I'm not sure who else has them available right now with no wait (these rifles can take a little time to get if you have to order direct...Scott can probably give you an idea on your wait time from the factory), but check out GunBroker as there are usually some available from stocking dealers and you may be able to find a deal from somewhere like AV Guns in Florida, etc.

As to "upgrades"...with the 20" rifle, I didn't care for the VLTOR E-MOD collapsible stock, so I pulled it after about 200 rounds and mounted a Magpul PRS Gen II complete with one of Slash's heavy rifle buffers (I shoot mine suppressed often). Mine was also an earlier production model, so I upgraded the standard cam pin to a roller cam when they became available. Other than that...the rifle is stock.

For optics...the sea is wide and deep in terms of options. If you want additional MOA from your scope, then you will need:

a) Badger Ord 22MOA riser (use with std picatinny rings of your chosing);

b) Larue Mount (the LT-158 has 10MOA, the LT-107 has 30MOA);

c) AADMount ( http://www.aadmount.com/ ...20MOA built in, but no QD like the Larue).

Whatever you do...you'll be extremely pleased with the POF. Mine has been a true workhorse since I got it and is one of the most accurate semi-auto rifles I have owned.

Re: Buying a POF

+1 for the PRS on the 20". That and a bipod are the only add on's you really need IMO (besides scope). The NF unimount also has 20 moa built in.And +1 also on "you'll be extremely pleased with the POF"

Re: Buying a POF

As of last week wait time was only a couple of weeks for 16 and 20. It varies wildly depending on orders. I prefer the 16 ....enough for distance but still handy and not too long for a supressor.

Re: Buying a POF

A POF .308 will be my next purchase too. I've seen them for as little as $2000 right here in the "Firearms for sale" section. Maybe even lower IIRC. I'm still working on the funds.

FWIW: From what I can tell POF is continually improving their rifles so if you do look at a used one look it over closely to see that it's not too far back in the evolution. That said, POF has some FANTASTIC Customer service and will certainly bring your rifle up to current spec... for a price. So you may end up paying MSRP anyway... Food for thought.

Re: Buying a POF

Sir,

Congrats on your decision to go with POF. I have always had good experiences with them, own two, one in .223 and one in .308. Even when I did have an issue (one time) the rifle was back in my hands six days after shipping it to POF and running perfectly.

+1 for the guys over at Rainier Arms as well, sales and service are top notch.

Good luck!
Matt

Re: Buying a POF

POF is a fine choice. Scott is da man! Very likable and just an all-around good guy.

Got a chance to pick up my 415 Recon from the factory and was really impressed by their capabilities and staff. Frank the owner is a really nice guy too.

Re: Buying a POF

New member here. I've enjoyed reading the posts. It's a privilege to learn from the experience found on this site.

I've recently purchased a POF .308 in 20". All I can say is, holy smokes! Shooting MOA right away with 147gr FMJBT "BALL" XM80 from Tactical Ammunition. I'm sure it can do better with match ammo. All I can say is, it is a very accurate rifle. Far beyond my abilities. The fit and finish are top notch. I've put fewer than 50 rnds. down the barrel. I'm looking forward to getting to know this firearm.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Buying a POF

I don't know if there is a Cabela's near you but they may have some in stock. This weekend I went to the Cabela's in Wheeling Wv and was surprised to find that they had a few new POF rifles in stock. They said that they just got them in. I walked out with a new POF 415 in 223/5.56x45 with an 18" barrel. They had two of the 415's both with 18" barrels and at least one POF in 308. I did not handle the the 308 version but I was glad to be able to handle the P415 before spending $1999.00 on it. I have been doing a lot of searching on line and the price was in line for the latest generation P415s. According to the Cabela's web site they carry the 20" 308 version in the stores.
