Night Vision Buying used PVS-24

I'm looking at buying a used PVS-24 manufactured in 2009. I haven't dealt with nvgs since turning in my issued PVS-14 in 2007.

What questions should I be asking and what should I be looking for? Is there a shop (TNVC, etc) that would inspect this unit (for a cost) and refurb it if necessary?

I recently picked up a PVS-24 in a trade. Just ask for some pics to see condition. You want to make sure that it works properly. Make sure that a battery did not leak. You want to make sure it is still colminated. I would not bother asking what so many people ask, and that is how many hours are on it. There is no internal clock to tell you and unless the thing is new or rarely got used no one can really tell you how many hours they have on the unit. The other is are there any blems in the view. If there are you want to see a through scope picture to see how many, how big ,and where they are. As long as they are not to big or in a bad spot they are not an issue, but what someone will tolerate is up to the individual.

I do not even know when mine was made. Gen 3 tubes are rated for 10,000 hours, so saying limited life is not exactly correct as no one I know of has ever killed a tube from use. The only NV units that I have ever heard that were refurbished were the KAC PVS-30's that came out of the military. No idea if L3 refurbishes these units. Not sure TNVC does this type of work for items they do not put together themselves. If you cannot physically inspect the unit ask for a 2-3 inspection period. Again, as long as it works as designed there should not be an issue.

just cause someone else has fingered it for a while don't make it any less new to you get it , enjoy it , shoot it , though you may want to clean it real well then have fun with it good luck .

I’m not dead set on it. Why is there a better option?

FWIW I was planning to use this in front of an ACOG, Vortex 1-6, and NF 2.5-10. May pick up a 1-8 or 1-10 in the future.

Oh and how do I make sure it's still colluminated?

An easy way to check alignment is to shoot a group from a stable braced position without the CNVD infront of the day optic, then fire a second group with the CNVD clipped on in front of the day optic using the same point of aim.

The CNVD was designed to work with the 4X ACOG.

I've taken in several 24's from the government 1033 program, Ed Wilcox from Wilcox Engineering & research was able to get a couple back on zero with our current and he sent one to L3 to see the comparison . I really can't tell the difference between the couple that he fixed and the on he sent to L3.
