So I spent the last couple of days with Brian Whalen of Colorado Precision Rifle at the Blue Steel Ranch in NM. On Monday Brian introduced me to his Caliber Matrix and we did a video on the subject.

Initially, I posted a single image on Instagram showing the chart. And the internet cracked under the stress of seeing what we had. The white board in the video is what was posted so you can reference that...

after I shot the video I took a second look at it and adjusted my thoughts a bit and changed a few numbers

This is not intended to be set in stone but rather a bit more personal. As an example, I would not consider load stability personally. I tend to shoot factory ammo so it's not a consideration of mine. If I was more intuned with reloading, I might want to consider this aspect of the matrix. For me, that column would be about the availability of factory ammo. What are the costs, options, etc?

The point being, individualize this for you and your needs. Make it your own.

It's really about starting the conversation and guiding a new or immediate shooter down a simpler path.

All about starting the conversation, not ending one by making blanket statements, cause that never works.

Meant to post. That matrix would be awesome for a presentation at Precision Rifle Expo type event. I went this year and sat in the class I believe it was called “What is Long range shooting “. Trinity Brown gave the presentation. He was trying to get people to look at there individual situation. What are you planning on doing with your set up and at what ranges etc.

When I first saw this chart on Instagram, I almost balked at how low you scored the Three-Oh-Hate. But then I stopped and realized that the low score is precisely why it scores a 5 in the training category. You guys harp repeatedly on the podcast about the value of training with a .308 precisely because it makes you work harder for better hits by focusing on the fundamentals.

Nicely done, and an excellent idea. All of the guys posting these "which round/caliber?" questions should seriously consider making one of these based on some personal research to help them narrow down what each has to offer.

There are other ways to score, different categories to include, etc.

It's good because it can be applicable to every situation with a bit of minor tweaking

Someone made a good point on FB in the Valkyrie Argument thread there that not everything needs to be compared to shooting a PRS Match and that is absolutely correct. Different people have different criteria and the PRS is a game.

Absolutely. The categories you list can be altered to match your own criteria, but the idea remains the same. It allows the user to quickly and easily compare various options in categories that they find most important to them and then select accordingly.

    You should sticky this.

I like it. It’s a great tool to help make the common “what caliber” question easier to answer. If your interest is hunting, you’d add categories including energy on target, for example.
