I have a R700 s/a with a .384 bolt face (.223). I'm looking to change it up and am looking for caliber suggestions. Action will be trued when it comes apart. I do NOT want to open the bolt face so 308 based cartridges are out. I'm open to some wildcats but don't want to go thru extensive re-sizing or fire forming. Primary use will be paper punching to 300 with an occasional trip to 700-1000 on steel once a year. This will be a "trainer" for my 6.5 so I'm good with the wind kicking it around a bit.

What say the sages of "The Hide"?

Why not a fast twist .223 ? It'll handle paper at 300 perfectly and heavy bullets will get to 1000 . If you're only going long once a year I don't see a reason not to use a .223 , unless you're bored and want to experiment with a wildcat .

Not a ton of caliber options for 223 BF. 223 Rem is about the "go to" for a center fire trainer. Could pick up a Sako or CZ flavor in rim fire if your looking for an extra challange in wind and elevation reading
