Long time stalker, short time boot...

53 year old Marine grunt living the good life in Paradise getting fat, dumb and happy in the process...

On to my boy toy... my Remmy 700 ADL started life on a diet of Federal Premium 165gr putting backstrap into the freezer. A couple years back I decided to approach the boys at Kreiger for one of those fancy stainless 5R's with fluting and after several LONG months, the UPS guy threw one on my front porch. So I sent the stick off to a Smith to tighten that hussie up and I got a call last week to come pick her up. Here is where she sits at the moment, still needing proper glass and a real DBM system up her gut. I suppose a Timney makes sense also. It's been nearly two years since I felt this rifle on my shoulder and I am pretty jacked about seeing what she will do with some 175G match kings... I want to set her up with a 300 zero and then stretch her wings out a bit to see what she can do.. this heavy pig just became a paper cutter I suppose...

Gentlemen, I introduce you to Gracie.. she ain't much, but she's mine... she looks rather striking with lipstick on, dontcha think?

Thanks for the welcome Red and sib... the thought process on the 300 yard zero is this.. not sure what scope I was going to mount and therefore not sure how much range of adjustment the erector would have, so I was thinking rather than set zero towards the bottom of the erector range to allow me to stretch out the yardage, that I would set zero at 3 and still have the range to shoot out to 1000+ if I get the chance... here in NW Florida, most public ranges are 100-300, so my time out beyond that would be limited... but, with all that said, I have been told I think to much, so all suggestions are greatly appreciated. BTW, I have that JBM calculator pinned to my shortcuts and run Bullet Flight and Strelok on my droid.... Semper Fi

Aah... I see you're a bit more schooled than some of the other new guys on the forum. Good to hear!

Unless you're running a very limited scope with a serious cant in your base, there's little reason you wouldn't be able to acquire a 100yd zero. With the available optics out there now, even at the lower price range, I don't see any reason to pick up a scope that wouldn't allow full employment of your system within its effective ranges. Really you will only need about 45moa/13 mil available up elevation after zeroing at 100yds and you're solidly at the transonic zone by then. Between Vortex PST, Bushnell or SWFA SS variables on the less expensive end to Nightforce and Schmidt & Bender on the premium, you can certainly stretch it out. Hopefully you can find a good place to shoot it at distance as well; that 26" beast of a barrel is begging for a 3/4 mile challenge!

If your rifle is old enough and has the original Remington ribbed style trigger, I wouldn't even buy a Timney, because in my opinion you have a better one in it already. Just send it to get tuned up and it'll serve you quite well. (Although if your concerned about the safety issue Timney has solved that, personally my safety is in my head.)

If you have a xmark (silver and no ribs) get rid of it like a bad girlfriend.

Nice to know on the trigger Rhyno.. she is an older stick, but not sure how old since I am not the original owner. It is the original Remmy trigger is all I know, but you know how it is.. if I come across the right deal on the right upgrade, my DNA will not allow me to pass it up. Back to the glass, Red I am looking to start with the Bushnell Elite Tactical ET6245F (6-24x50 Ill MilDot) until I get my dope solid and then migrate to better glass as my experience grows... of course, the right deal comes along that is subject to change. I would love to come across a sweet S & B at some point, but we will see.. as far as a range with distance, we have a private club just east of here that has tactical urban ranges, distance rifle ranges, pistol, etc. etc.. I am looking into what it takes to get into them.. it would be a shame to build out this stick just to train on the bottom end. Semper Fi

That Bushnell is a good example of a scope that would limit your long range capabilities in dialing enough elevation. It only has 12 mils of available elevation in it, which is common in high magnification budget scopes. A better option in that price range would be a Vortex PST 6-24x50 (19 mil available) mounted on a 20 or 30 moa base. That would give you 10-11 mils available elevation post zeroing on a 20 moa base, and that is worst case. Punching that into JBM estimating 2700 fps velocity with that barrel of yours that gives you enough elevation to get to 1000yds on an average day at your elevation.

Thanks for the link Red.. been out to Texas for a few days and am just getting back.. yeah, I just picked up on the elevation limitation on that Bushnell... My mind is not quite that far out yet... I have however found a range to get started on that is in my backyard that will help me stretch my feet out with a little experienced guidance along the way.... they have several known/unknown ranges out to 1000 and are reasonably priced for fees and memberships. I am pretty jacked about getting out to see them soon and take a tour of the facilities.. it looks pretty top notch and they have an affiliation with the hide... win/win in my book.
