I have a 26" fluted barrel. I would prefer a 22" or 20" barrel. With the flutes I can only shorten it to about 24" without cutting in to the flutes.

Can you shorten a barrel into the flutes part of the barrel? I have never seen one that way, but don't know if it is even possible.

Thx.

You can certainly cut it down. If you want it to appear that the flutes don't run all the way to the end, have the barrel threaded and a smooth thread cap installed.

There was someone that posted a picture of a shortened barrel with flutes that he did. I think he just smoothed the edges and it turned out ok. Hopefully he posts up the picture for you.

Take a look in the 18" barrel thread. If I remember correctly thats where I saw it.

IMO the best option in terms of appearance would be to cut it and install a brake of some type such as the Badger FTE or Surefire. Flutes terminating into an end mounted attachment looks much cleaner than just chopping.

I saw a rifle that had this done to it (can't remember what brand or model) but went a step further: The smooth thread cap (about 1" long) was also fluted to line up with the barrel flutes, and terminated about 1/2" before the muzzle end of the cap. At first glance, you could barely see that there was a cap at all. I don't know how much the guy paid to have that done, but it looked really nice.
