I had a cat follow me home from the liquor store today. She has sat in my lap for the last 5 hours. If it weren't for the fact that she freaks out whenever my dog walks in the room I'd keep her. What the hell do I do?

Re: Cats?

Take her to a vet straight away and have him or her check if she is knocked up. They can be aborted if not too far along.
Get her spayed unless you want more cats. There may be a spay and nueter clinic near you that can do all of the above cheaper than a vet. Regards, FM

Re: Cats?

I will say, I took in a stray a while back, and the cat had kittens, and it was one of the funnest experiences. Granted, I was 9 and didn't have to think twice about them tearing the entire house apart, but there's nothing like waking up to a kitty nascar circuit going on in your living room, using couches as berms. Absolutely hilarious. She also gave birth within a couple months of us taking her in, so Mike's advice is really solid, you may get a litter.

Re: Cats?

The cat clinic we rescued ours from reccommended keeping the cat in tue bathroom and gradually socializing. Personally I say box train it, get it spayed and you have a lifelong pest control devise that purrs.

Re: Cats?

If I can't find someone to take her within the next couple of days I'll get her fixed. I do not need her to have kittens. I'm way more of a dog guy as I see cats as a bit of a crap shoot as to whether they'll even like you.

I've kind of figured that but I'm more committed to my dog. If they can't get along the dog stays. The dog actually ignores the cat but whenever she is anywhere near the cat strikes out.

Re: Cats?

Just adopted a cat from our county animal control. She is great. Sits with us, terrorizes the dogs, and really likes being wherever we are. I am not a cat person by far but this one is allright in my book.

Re: Cats?

A) People don't adopt cats. Cats adopt people.

B) Nobody owns a cat. They simply cohabit with cats, mostly.

C) Cat don't, and never will, care about what you want them to do. You exist to serve their needs, be prompt.

D) Cats cannot be trained, but some of them are pretty good at training humans.

E) That dog is lucky the cat didn't take a real dislike to him; in time the cat will determine whether or not to allow the dog to cohabit. Otherwise, Armakatandoggon ensues. Dogs tend to lose. Don't bother to ask me how I know. BTDT 2many times.

F) Never try to 'discipline' a cat. Only you will understand the transaction, and it tends to annoy the cat. Angry cats are not good to be around.

G) Per my cats: Mice? Enh...

H) A Pretty cat is usually also a Diva cat; and yes, they can read your mind. They're doing it right now.

I) Cats get even. Always. Don't even think about it, see H).

J) When a cat is studying you, they're doing it again. Ask them. Blink once for yes...

K) Cats do fart. Oh Brother do they ever... Usually in your lap. Consider it an expression of their trust and affection...; and keep some Febreeze handy...

Lol..So true.

Re: Cats?

My wife has been feeding a family of three strays that got our attention by killing and sharing about 4 squirrels with us on our back porch. They are all from the same litter and someone had them fixed. They are awesome hunters but they'd rather eat what my wife gives them. We have to sneak out of the house to go for a walk because they follow us everywhere. Once, I had one of them follow me on a two mile walk of the dog... I was nervous because I didn't want it getting hit by a car. I've never seen this kind of commitment from a cat before. They definitely picked us.

Re: Cats?

In reference to "E" of the "Cat Compendium"
Said cat would'nt last 5 minutes at the farm unless they're carried around by the head followed by a limp lifeless body.
Dogs discretion

Re: Cats?

Cats are like house plants: Feed them, and water them, and they will thrive on their own. So it shouldn't be a problem for you to keep at least one cat around regardless of the dog.

A cat, like a horse, is a companion animal. It shares space with you and, for the most part, does its own thing. People who can't tolerate that character trait in an animal are the same people who can't be around other humans without either being the center of attention or bossing other people around.

So, assess your personality and go with your gut.

Re: Cats?

I agree, keep her. We had a stray cat in Austin that lived in the forest and eventually became our house cat. One of the best and by far the biggest (solid muscle) cats we ever had. He'd go out fight racoons and come back all proud and bloody. If you keep your eyes open you'll find deals of spaying ~$20. She'll get used to the dog eventually, probably end up friends keeping each other company so it's win win.

Re: Cats?

Once a cat has imprinted on you you have two choices. You can quickly make use of a Cantonese recipe book before you lose your nerve, or you can begin praying the local discount mart never runs out of your new master's favorite canned food.
My American Bobtail will not eat anything except Friskies Pate and a certain cheap dry food I get from Sam's, you do not want to find out how a cat lets you know he is unhappy with his meal....shh....Mr Bobby is coming, I have to go.....

Thats awesome. Youre screwed. The dog and cat will come to an agreement eventually. Said agreement will pretty much be dictated by the cat of course.

Keep her

Re: Cats?

Cats will do tricks, if you have something they want.

I raised chickens, and thin slices of raw chicken heart was the right treat.

Store bought chicken hearts don't work.

This reminds me of a joke:
What is 6 inches long, 2 inches wide, and drives women wild?

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Money.

Re: Cats?

Keep the cat. She will become your shadow and will acclimatize to the dog. Before you know it, they'll be plotting raids on the fridge like Pinky and the Brain.

Got two cats from the local shelter, one of my better decisions.

Re: Cats?

WOW I had no idea there were so many PUSSIES on this site.....I'm one too.

I got a female Mancoon that was wild at first. It took us 8 months before she would even come in the yard but she gradually got closer and closer until one day she was knocked up and started having kittens on our front porch. i scooped her up and the rest is history. She is now one of the most loving cats I have ever been around.

I would keep the cat you got, they are great destresser's but Like someone else said, take it to the vet to make sure it doesn't have anything wrong with it.

Re: Cats?

Congrats on the new family member. There is no going back now.

One of our cats, "AWOL", adopted us when he jumped into our car (he had probably been dumped), planted his feet on the dash and looked over his shoulder as if to say "ok, I'm in. Take me home." He was at the side of the road and we stopped. He jumped in the car within about 5 seconds...

Just remember, you are a crazy cat person to the SQUARE of the number of cats you have. So 1 cat, fine. 3 cats gives you a 9 crazy cat person factor. etc. Use caution.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Cats?

We visit nursing homes with a cat that showed up at our back door2 years ago. What a special animal. She sits on 20 laps and demands more attention when she gets home.

Re: Cats?

When we bought our place, it came with a cat. The previous owners were going to take it to the pound and we figured it would be good to have around for keeping mice and rats out of the barn. We came in with three large dogs and the cat, who had actually been an indoor cat, lived on top of the kitchen cabinets for two weeks. One day he got sick of sneaking around the dogs and posted himself in the middle of the kitchen floor. Two of the dogs had to come have a look-see. The cat quickly told them that he would like a little more space. After that they were all fine.

The cat started using the doggy door to go outside and completely quit using his cat box. Only downside of the cat using the doggy door was that he could bring things in the house to share with his new family. That cat was a stone cold killer though!

One day the farrier was here and saw the cat. He said "I'm not against cats but, I want a pet to come when I call it." I whistled and called "Here Jack"; the cat came trotting up to me. He just passed a few months ago. Don't think I could find another cat that cool.

ME: I think I'm pretty frikken weird as a adult male to be having a cat.
GF response: I think it would be more weird not having any animal.

I won't go into my preference and proud dog history or excuse with employment. The above stuck into my mind. I'll admit I like the cat "Bullet" she brought me.

Re: Cats?

Nothing wrong with cats. I love having them around. Greg's post is right on. Got 4 now but have had up to 5 in the house. Also got some outside cats in the garage.

Re: Cats?

I feed my cats an inexpensive dry food. It's what's for dinner, Kitty; period. They eat it or quickly learn to how to grow thin. One of my cats could care less, the other one is in my face whenever I'm snacking. Literally. If she wasn't quite so cute and otherwise sweet, we'd have an issue. My fault, totally.

Cats are pragmatists, especially when they are compelled to be indoor cats. They eat what they are given, all other cat-compatioble food is kept uner wraps. I don't do doors for cats, they live inside and that's the agenda, period. Better for all concerned, I've had a few indoor/outdoor cats returned ot me in plastic bags by solicitous neighbors. Not my idea of a stellar event.

Also, dry food and more tolerable cat boxes often go hand in hand. No guarantees on that. Yes, I do get down on my hands and knees to scoop out the cat box. It's just another chore, like taking out the garbage.

Not sure whether farms, dogs, and dead cats are the best policy. I'll leave that to the individual farmers. Barn cats do help control rodents; and rodents and rabies are not incompatible. Beyond that, I'm not going to comment. Barn cats are usually too wild to qualify as bonafide pets.

Re: Cats?

Apparently my cat is a dog reincarnate..house trained, heels, and comes when you whistle. He also can't catch a mouse and has the reaction time of a slug. Otherwise a great cat with black hair that shimmers red in the sunlight.

Re: Cats?

Mine are always within sight, come when called, and tend to follow me around. They have no fear of my hands, and no reasons to fear them. I do not strike my cats. I'll clap, I'll hiss, and I'll pet them generously whenever they do what I like to see them doing. Usually, when I recline, I have a pair of cats in my lap very soon. Cats who live in my house are fortunate. I see no mice.

Re: Cats?

If you want to have a ton of fun with a cat get an inexpensive laser pointer. My cat loves to chase the stupid things all over, good way of getting them lots of exercise.

Re: Cats?

Might as well feed it and love it. I like having my outside cats around. The only cats I have left are the ones that do not bother the rabbits or the dog. My dog is mental over the rabbits. If you are a critter and are messing with the rabbits you have forfeited life rights. I would allow them inside but I am allergic to them.

Re: Cats?

I tried the laser on Mr Bobby. He simply gave me "the look", which is why I tolerate him at all. He is much smarter than any feline I have evre known. I am expecting any day to come home and see him sitting up in my chair reading the Wall Street Journal.
We went on a short two day trip a few years ago and came home to find we had no water in the spring box. Bobby had flushed the toilets in the house till he hung up the flappers. A water loving cat can most definately flush a toilet.
Another thing I love about my bobtail is his vast vocabulary along with his whuffs and chirps. I swear he says morning and mama. My daughter can whuff at him and he will nuzzle her face. When I whuff at him he gives me a clawless bitch slap...obviously I have not figured this out. He is an extremely large cat so I try not to piss him off.

Re: Cats?

Keep the cat. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs, one of the dogs being a recent addition from a rescue shelter. It took her about a week for the cats to get her mind right. Now they understand each other perfectly and if the dog forgets, 5 lightening fast pops to the head gets her mind back where it needs to be.

Re: Cats?

The cat had to go to the humane society today. Last night she attacked my dog while the dog was taking a nap. The dog didn't do anything to provoke the attack at all. The cat wouldn't back off and eventually had my dog cornered in the kitchen where it continued to beat the crap out of her. The dog was crying and was so scared she pissed herself.
On a side note my German Shepard is a sissy.

This guy looks very similar to my Jack (Tripper III). I also have Marmalade. Guess what she looks like. Both are 13 and doing well and have had no medical problems, thank God. I freak when that stuff happens. They both know, and hate it, when it's time for the annual checkup at the vet so it's an awful struggle finding and getting them into the portable kennels for the trip. I can't figure out how they know, but they do.

Mine is cool with all animals no matter what. She'll let anyone else's pet in and has always ignored cats. She does like to chase after rabbits and squirrels bit will actually run up to them and stop suddenly and let them go. She is such a puss that I tried to feed her a whole deer liver once, she looked at me like she didn't know what to do with it and only ate some of it after I cut a little piece off for her. She's a pussy.

I hope so.

I feel for his dog.

But I also feel for the cat too. After all the cat picked him.

I understand his logic. I hope it was a no kill though. Sounds like she would make a great pet.

i would have kept the victor

we have a cat i rescued threw unusual circumstances - i used to be a vacuum salesman years ago and went to a house where the lady had the cat on a 3ft chain around the kitchen table it could go on top of the cat box in the cat box and on the floor to eat - i persuaded her to let me take the cat - she called my boss the next day asking for it back i would not comply

he is an amazing mouser
smile.gif
fun and really attached to my woman - he will go on walks with us across town - comes when called - if my woman is crying he comes running to her side - its so damn cute

one time we found mouse poop in the bathroom and she scolded the cat while making him sit next to the mouse poop - next day there was a mouse on the bathroom floor laying very still......lol

not to long ago we heard a mouse in the laundry room - she reminded him of his purpose here - he couldnt get the mouse...so he went outside and killed a bird lol

cats are not dumb - if you care for them they will work with you - you have to respect them

if i ever come across an akita dog for sale near me then well see how the cat deals with dogs...
