    It appears that this is very close to RAL 1002 according to RGB matching that I've done in Photoshop. Another site has this tagged as Pantone 30118, but I just can't see that. It's no where close to Pantone 30118.

    This rifle is coated in Gen II NiR, but the color is not listed officially anywhere (Remington isn't going to tell either). I'm thinking it's "Desert Sand" (HIR-199). I won't be able to get that particular coating since it's LE/MIL only. The High-Temp series has a "Desert Sand" (C-211Q).

    So are my eyes deceiving me or would you guys agree on the match there, or at least close enough perhaps?

    I have some rings shot in desert sand cerakote and I would describe it being closer to ai pale Brown than to what you have pictured. When I say closer I mean it's got a more of a pink shade in the tan and not yellow. I have also seen ral8000 shot on a few parts and it def has a light green/yellow hue in it under certain light similar to the buttpad in your picture. I'll try to get you a pic of those rings.

    Thanks. Yeah, I could see that. In my application (barrel in the very near future when blanks are available) it might not look bad perhaps. I have a few RAL8000 S&B's but it is off by a little. I could see it matching in certain lighting.

    I use a lot of the H-series Desert Sand and the photo you posted has more yellow in it. If you can find an applicator nearby that has the color samples that could help you narrow it down more closely.

    Reminds me a lot of GunKote Flat Desert Tan...
    Good stuff, cheaper than CKote (I prefer Ckote, but have good results with GunKote as well).

    In any case, I would caution strongly against comparing colors on a video monitor. Just not an accurate color rendition. Even chips aren't exact, depending on the mix results differ.

    Oh I am with you. I entirely agree. Everything is such a damn useless secret on this rifle it's sort of a pain in the ass. From what I can tell though it is a mix equaling to RAL 1002.

    The color of the stock. Barrels will arrive to me "raw". I believe the stock is RAL 1002 in color according to my research. Looks like a custom Cerakote color mix though - maybe.

    if you have the stock in hand you could swing by sherwin williams and they can scan it and possibly help narrow it down. i forget if they tell you pantones vs ral classification.

    i had some stuff sprayed a few years back that came out a lighter tan like that. i had most of the pieces redone to something darker but let me see if i still have one of the random lighter shaded pieces laying around. if i do i’ll pm you a foto and see if i can figure out what color cerakote was used at the time. maybe even send you the piece to compare in person. . . . assuming i didnt redo them all.

    I thought about that too. Thank you very much for the offer to send me samples but I should be ok. I am going to see what a few local coaters have for samples after I have a match and go from there. They are probably going to push me towards DuraCoat or Gun-Coat though. I might go with a non-matching color for the barrel also, haven't decided (which I really should). Maybe just a shade darker to offset it a bit. Barrels are still a good bit out though so I have a little time.

    @LANCER Nice. I like that.

    I'm probably going to have to stick with the C-series though just because I don't have an oven large enough to cure in (and no way to suspend it).

    Either that, or go the nitride path. A black nitrided barrel wouldn't look bad I think (hesitant to go that route though due to many negatives and only a few positives).

    Is anyone actually big on nitriding a custom bolt-gun barrel these days?

    The action and brake on one of my 6.5's is BN. Had the barrel cerekoted to match, which it did perfectly, so you really need to pay attention to figure out the coating is different. BN works really well for me. It does rub the "black" from the high friction parts of the bolt, but the stuff is so impregnated that it is just a color rub, not a loss of protection. It also makes it pretty easy to know where to put grease vs. light oil. When I want the barreled action to match front to back my personal order of preference for coatings is BN, followed by dulled stainless (topped with flat Duracoat if it needs to be protected from the elements), and then Cerakote.
