Just joined the site and I am looking to get my first precision rifle. I have been looking at the Savage 10FCP with the HS stock but I keep seeing the 700 SPS at Dicks for about 450 and I started thinking I could get one in .308 and put a nice stock on it. The thing I am wondering are the barrels junk on these actions? I keep thinking they must be when some of the 700s are in the 1000 range??

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

My Savage 10 shoots 1/2 MOA out of the box. (Edited to add: Most Remingtons will shoot sub-MOA out of the box, as well.) So are they junk? Hells no. Are you going to want to replace it after a couple thousand rounds? Hells yes.

Now, when thinking of another barrel to go to: "Cheap" is not a descriptor you want to hear when considering the purchase of a new barrel. Get yourself a Rock, Lilja, or Lawton barrel.

Your thinking is mistaken. The varmint contour barrels on the SPS models are very good and will serve you well. You'd be astounded at the number of people who have built great shooters on that model. You'll probably find it shoots damn well right off the blocks.

Merry Christmas

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

My Remington SPS Tactical in 308 with a Falcon Menace 4.5-18X56mm scope averaged eight 5 shot groups at .551. This is while breaking in the barrel with cleaning every 5 rounds. Distance was a measured 100 meters.

I haven't shot off a bench in over twenty years and my eyes are old. The rifle is completely stock with only the trigger adjusted. I used a load of 43.5 grains of IMR4064, Lapua brass, Federal match primer and SMK 168gr bullet.

I believe that by working up a load and a little trigger time I can get this stock rifle to shoot in the middle fours.

My only complaints were the extremely long throat (had to seat the bullet .120 off the lands) and the very rough feed rails that had to be polished so they would not scratch the brass.

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

I will add my .02 cents here FWIW. I don't know shit about 1000 yards. I have 3 Remington Sendero contour barrels. I believe they are the same barrels that are put on the SPS. Varmint contour. I am sure the named maker barrels on average are better then a stock Remington for many reasons of which i will not get into. Suffice to say that My Remingtons with trigger work and hand-load work will shoot 1/2 inch at 100 yards or BETTER. These include a 300WM, a .308 winchester and a 22 -250. I don't know that I am any better shooter then that? Would I shoot a name barrel more accurate? I don't know and I will not know until the .300 needs a new barrel. I will buy a Shilen at that time. I know many hide members think 1/2 inch for a stock Remington is out of the ordinary. In the group of guys I shoot with it is standard. We are not pro shooters just guys that like to shoot out to 600 yards and farther some days. We carefully reload, we get the copper out of our barrel when we are done shooting ( and during) we are careful that we have good rings that are well mounted and I must add that sometimes our rifles in addition to lighting the trigger pull, we sometimes bed our stocks. We use the junk HS precision stocks that so many hide members think are horrible and most are not bedded. They are just torqued to 60 inch pounds of pressure.

Buy a 700 with a Varmint contour barrel and start shooting. Lighten the trigger, and bed the stock. I read lots of posts by honest guys who have much nicer tackle then i do and they honestly post how tight there groups are. Mine are sometimes tighter at 1/4 the price. At some point skill has to be added to the equation and you want to max out your rifle before you spend 3 times the money to shoot the same group.

I hope that doesn't come across as bragging as that is not my intent. I am a humble dude just posting the facts as I know them to be..... Jeff

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

My question still remains then, why is the 700 sps or ADL so inexpensive compared to the other models of 700? Such as the VSSF or etc? Just adding a nicer stock does not add up to the price difference....has me wondering.....

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

First off..Stainless barreled actions cost more. Wood stocked models with blued barrel actions cost more due to the bluing process VS the cheap black matte finish on sps and adl models. The black plastic stocks are said to cost between $8-$12 to produce vs. Walnut stocks that need to be cut, fit and finished from a blank.. Heavy barreled models that have HS precision stocks cost around $250 more because of the increased cost of the HS stock. The SPS barrels, varmint barrels, pss barrels, LTR bbls are all produced on the same machinery and are of the same quality. So if you don't want an HS stock and you want a 700 barreled action to drop into a different stock...buy a cheap..er SPS varmint.

Re: Cheap Remmy 700 sps barrels

I don't think you give up much accuracy-wise with a factory Remington barrel. My Sendero shoots mostly around .5 MOA once I worked up loads. Heck, I even got a Savage package gun shooting .5-.6 MOA consistently (I cheated, this was after adding a Rifle Basix trigger and dropping unbedded into an HS Precision stock).

Bedding is an easy improvement on any gun (and cheap, DIY).

The only disadvantage I have found, and have heard is common, is that I have to clean my 300WM Sendero VERY frequently. I get about 20 rounds before accuracy rapidly degrades. I clean out the carbon and copper and .5 MOA is acheived again. I'm told the barrels are a lot more porous than custom hand lapped barrels, which this gun will get when the factory tube is fried.

I'd buy the gun now with a factory barrel, then when you burn it out your game will be up and you will be able to do the custom barrel justice (and have the action trued while you have the barrel off).
