Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

I'm trying to get something on my shelf other than a 22mag and 357mag revolver and found the Savage Edge XP 308 to be a reasonable price. I just need something to get me through this fall/winter before I move to a more permanent rig that I can use for target as well as hunting. Has anyone actually fired one of these or know someone who has? Deer have a pretty big kill zone so I'm not terribly worried about sub MOA accuracies with this...just want to get by. Plus this hunk of plastic comes with a scope so I don't have to do a lot of leg work...

If it helps, I'm really trying to keep my total budget under $750 for everything so suggestions are welcome for other setups.

If it's a temporary thing and you aren't really going to be attached, why not?
I am sure it will function just fine for a hunting rifle and minute of animal. Haven't priced these, but I bet you could snag something used for a similar price.

Plenty of options

Maybe grab an sps or savage 10 that will cost a bit more, but could be used to build on later?

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

The edge you can't use aftermarket stocks with and there is no way to step up. Go with a Stevens. The price is the same and the parts are interchangable with a Savage except the accutrigger. They work with aftermarket stocks and aftermarket parts so you will be able to modify it as the money comes in. Mine in my sig is modified a bit but with hand loads it can be a 1/4moa stick.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

I say pass on the Edge and go with either a Stevens 200 or a Savage Model 10. I got my Mod 10 package gun w/ scope from walmart for $384.00. Those edges just have a really cheap feel to them.

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

Those are all good suggestions. I've been looking around for some used Rem 700 and Savage 10 packages and there seems to be a decent amount available. I'll probably go that route and then build up later. After going to a couple more gun shops today I really found that I disliked the Edge and would prefer to buy a 700 even if used.

Thanks, everyone for your help and suggestions.

I was just looking at these online and was pretty impressed. How much can be added/swapped from these to make a higher end package?

Thanks,

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

well there is an expert named pete lincoln on here i beilieve he owns roedale precision, correct me if im wrong its been awhile since ive looked into it. I love the howas personally as i own many diff calibers and just picked up my 338. As far as after market upgrAdes you can always swap out the triggers however the trigger with it is extremely crisp and breaks so nice and very adjustable. The barrels, well just grab a blank if needed, only trouble is that not alot of smiths atleast in oregon that will cut the metric threads for ya. Other than that a good smith can definetely tune anything else you may want done.

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

If you decide to go the Savage route then get a Stevens/Savage .308 from Academy for $220 and a rifle basix trigger $80 and you can upgrade the stock and barrel as funds become available. If/when you upgrade the barrel go to Sharp Shooter Supply and get their competition recoil lug for $28. I did what I am recommending and I have a sub moa gun with a factory take off 10 twist heavy barrel and I am just below MOA groups (10 rounds (168 grain SMK's and 43 grains of Varget in once fired BHA cases)) with stock issues. I'll post groups when I get the stock issue fixed.

Re: Cheap Savage Edge XP....worth anything?

savage 10gxp3, package gun, you can choose from many different calibers including mag for under $700 dollars and you could use it for an effective build up later if you so wanted, i just got a bell and carlson medalist varmint stock for mine with alu pillar bed for my .300wsm for $230 shipped, and also planning on getting a shilen barrel down the road, they make drop in match select bull barrels for right around $300 which you can install yourself with a barrel wrench and a go no-go gauge. the scope is just a cheap simons but mine shoots sub moa factory with it and it'll make a nice addition to my .22lr when i finally buy a target scope. i'm trying to do the impossible, cheap target gun.
