Cheapest route to DBM for Remington 700?

Hello Sniper's Hide. I am a member of over a dozen forums with the same username so some of you might know that I recently acquired a NIB Remington 700 AAC-SD in 308 on trade, though I imagine most of you didn't know that

At any rate, I have been considering trading it for a Sig to avoid the inevitable thousands that I might put into this set up (bolt knob, stock, base, rings, glass, silencer, possible DBM).


At this point, I am almost wondering if I should go into a Remington Scout, or the like. I want the DBM because this could be a patrol rifle (alongside my AR) but, even if it isn't, I plan on replacing the Hogue stock since it loses it's free float with a bi-pod on the end.

I am not on a budget build, but I want to know if I am better off cutting the losses or going into the project and spending the, what will definitely be, thousands of dollars for my first bolt action rig.


My thoughts for the build would be:
-Badger Ordnance Bolt Knob
-Harris Bi-pod or similar quality Bi-pod
-Stock (something that allows for possible DBM down the line, is free floated and good quality. Not heavy but very durable.)
-I was thinking Vortex PST 6-24 but I am also looking at a Bushnell HDMR now (love the range in the scope and have read good things)
-762 SDN-6 (I want to suppress 300 Blackout, 308, and 5.56)
-The rings and base (I don't have a choice picked for these yet)

Also still wondering which reticle I would like on the Bushnell...between the G2 and Horus. Any comparisons on that would be great as well.

For a patrol bolt rifle, you do not need high magnification.

The Bushy HDMR is a VERY nice scope, but lacks illumination. If you have to deploy said rifle at night and the target is wearing dark clothes, you will have a VERY hard time picking up the crosshairs. The Vortex you are looking at has many fine features, but the magnification range is too high. I, personally, am not sure they are up to the task of bouncing around in the back of a car.

A 2.5-10 or 3-15 (or somewhere around there) with an illuminated reticle is the best answer.

Weaver 3-15x Tactical FFP illuminated reticle is a fairly compact very well made scope that runs about 720 bucks.
Another good option is the bushnell 3-12 tactical.

You do not "need" a tactical bolt knob. Both the army and the marines have been running model 700's without them for a very long time.
They are nice to have, but not a requirement.

A very good, very reasonable stock is either the B&C M40 or Light Tactical. They are both very well made, feature a full length aluminum bedding block and are robust. Plus, they only cost about 230 bucks. Yes, they can be inletted for DBM.

The harris bi-pod is an industry standard. There are better ones out there, but they cost significantly more. I run a 9-13" swivel model with a pod-loc.

There are numerous mounting options available for around 120 and on up.
Go to SWFA, do a search for 700 mounting kits.
They have TPS, EGW, Weaver, IOR and more. These kits include a one piece picatinny rail and a set of rings.
A steel, 20MOA TPS rail and aluminum rings run about 129.

So for about 1200 dollars you will have your scope, mounting hardware, bipod and new stock. (that's if you get the weaver or 2.5-10 PST)

Stiller makes a DBM that requires only minor fitting that you can do at home. About 285 and includes a magazine.

So, firstly, I understand the logic behind your magnification selection but I prefer to have more than I need than not enough. I can always scale in for precise shots (this could be used competitively as well though it would not be set up 100% for comp. since I will use it for patrol). I will have an AR15 and the Remington in the back in a Pelican case so I think it should be fine in the back of the trunk.


Thanks for the reply. The bolt knob is 100% out of preference. This is my first bolt action rifle but I have shot them before and I know that to be a preference I have.


I know there are places that do the inletting, is that the most cost effective route? To just buy a good stock and have it inletted?

Have monteboy84 here on the Hide do you a TacOps bolt knob. They are nicer than Badger and seem stronger. He has fair prices as quick turn-around.

I have a few tips (take them for what you paid for them)-

Stock + BDM- Just go look at Mcree Precision's stocks. I put one on my .308 because it cost less then if I got a good stock, bedded it or had it bedded, purchased a BDM and installed it or had someone inlet the stock for it, etc. It's an all aluminum rig that you just bolt the action down to- easy and fast.

Scope- Don't know your distances but Vortex makes great scopes. I have the Viper FFP that you see people selling around here once in a while- great.

They seem to do GREAT work, are cost effective, and add rigidity and support to the knob.

Whitebrad25, does the rifle shoot? if it does, the advice fdkay has given really can't be topped, except perhaps for some of your own personal preferences, (ie dbm type, lever v pushbutton, bolt knob type, reticle scope choice, magnification, stock choice). If this is a rifle that might be used in work, I would be hestiant to change anything on it and if you, do document it. If this rifle is going to be your first precision bolt action rifle and you have money to spend, then sell it and start elsewhere.

So, if you don't mind, why should I sell it and start elsewhere? A stock change will not be problematic in my dept. and I am not sure of any that it would. Essentially, that is all I am really wondering. The DBM is a question that indirectly asks questions of the stock (i.e. send of a stock to have inlet, buy stock with the inlet, etc.).

I am retaining my preference on bolt knob, magnification, I like the G2 reticle on the Bushnell but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for another reticle; however, I am still open to conversation on these topics.

Consider this, the Marines use a 3-12x (used to use a 3-9 then a fixed 10) and the Army uses a 10X.

A 3-15 is more than sufficient for 1000 yards, but suit yourself.

Just keep in mind that with a 6x low end, FOV is greatly reduced.

Targets do not stand still, FOV is important.

I know FOV is important and I am not in the Marines, or the armed forces for that matter. I work LE. I think it will be sufficient as, mentioned previously, I do like the reticle on the Bushnell (the G2 not the Horus 59).

I understand you are LE, as am I.

You seem to be missing the point.

Too much magnification is not a good thing, my point was that a 10X scope is wholly sufficient and a 15 or 16x top end is about ideal to engage targets to the maximum effective range of a 20" .308.

You seem set on overpowering your rifle.

Brad, there is no point spending thousands of dollars on a rifle that is not accurate. The Remington 700 AAC-SD is a $700 shooting platform, some are accurate others are not, most folks that buy one don't even realise they have a 1/10 twist. As for modifying a weapons platform, its not your Department that I would be worried about. As for a stock, what sort of stock do you like, something traditional like a McMillan A3 or A5, a Manners T3 or T4, these stocks will come inletted in a DBM of your choice. Perhaps you like the chassis systems, like AICS, XLR, KRG, McRees Precision, for the most part these stocks have a proprietary mag system. For bolt knobs check out http://www.phoenixcustomrifles.com/ a Hide sponsor, for magnification I am running a 4-14 on my bolt gun, with illumination, not a fan of Christmas tree reticles so I can give you no opinion on them.

It's not too expensive, and you'll get something that you probably have in mind.

You might want a different scope to suit your requirements, but this build uses the Surgeon DBM, which I have on one of my rifles and find superior to the Badger M5. Good luck!

CDI Precision is good stuff. About $200 and only charges $60 for a standard install. Turnaround is super fast too.. about a week.

Like I said, I am of the mindset that it is better to have and not need than to not have at all. I can always just take in some if I feel I do not have an adequate FOV but I can never zoom past the limitations of the magnification. I am pretty set on my optic choice. I certainly don't mind hearing both sides but, as indicated by the title of the thread, I am really more concerned with the DBM system.

I have decided I will choose between the XLR and Whiskey 3 chassis.

Budget be damned, these things are awesome. The folding option will allow for a little extra room in the trunk as well.
