Now it is endless, with text loops on the bottom of the screen. Official Zhongyang Jiankang Jiu (Ministry of Health) tally is 900 sickened with 8 deaths. One of the leading doctors on the front line of the research came down with it a couple of days ago and is recovering. He has been updating his condition on the mainland social media sites Weibo and Youku...

My company was supose to be installing a custom medical machine near this area in a few months. There have been more than a few of us that have told our bosses to get fucked I'd they think we are going there now.

It's worth noting that the only Biosafety Level 4 facility in China is located in Wuhan. Even the U.S. has only a small handful of facilities at that level, including the CDC and the Army's facility in Maryland. I'm sure it's a coincidence.

The common cold is caused by rhinoviruses. Corona virus causes "cold-like symptoms" but is a different virus "family." SARS and MERS are both particularly virulent strains of corona virus.
I'm not really afraid of all that much, but pandemic is one of my "phobias" and has been for my entire adult life. I've been voraciously reading about this one for weeks and although not a show stopper, like Ebola, it's plenty scary.
While there is a ton to admire about Chinese culture in general (work ethic, love of education, and tight family being at the top), cleanliness and general attention to hygiene are not on the list. These open air markets are truly fucking disgusting on a level that is beyond anything we even remotely have, and beyond most other third world shitholes (including the meat souks in the sandbox). The animals are in wire cages stacked on-top of one another where they're all breathing the same foetid air. They're chopping up a chicken, and then a monkey, and then a pig, and then a possum, and then a fish on the same piece of viscera slick plywood that they never clean. This is how a virus that can't jump between a bird and a human jumps between a bird to a pig and then to a human. It is a literal breeding ground for zoonotic beasties that can only infect animals, but in this environment can make small mutations to jump species, and then another small mutation to jump into humans.
When a virus takes over a cell, and highjacks that cell to replicate itself, that one cell can create thousands and even tens of thousands virions that spread and can leave the host to infect another. These virions are released in a burst that generally coincides with lysis/death of that cell.
The cell produces each one of those virions. It isn't a perfect comparison, but if we look at each of those virions as a generation of that virus you can see just why and how vast these viruses mutate when each and every cell is having thousands of generations, and all it takes is one that is compatible and can slip into a human cell. To me this is truly terrifying.
In the past I'd say fuck'em if they want to eat that shit and die, but with international travel their horrible practices are threatening us all. There's a reason that these diseases are coming out of the same countries, and they are precisely because they are providing a more conducive environment for zoonotics to jump than we can even produce in laboratory conditions.
These positive, single-strand RNA diseases can invade and spread crazy fast, and they have, and they are.

Mind you, I wasn't on the international side where they're screening people from direct flights from China, but I stayed the fuck away from the buffet and the bar and camped out in a less populated corner. It was packed, and I could hear every mother fucker cough every time they did it in the place. It was like all the background noise and murmur disappeared for me and all I heard were coughs and sneezes in the loud silence...? It was eerie. I was wishing I had a n95 or better mask. I'm going to order some today. I don't have to go anywhere for a while, but I'm going to start putting them in my travel bag.
