Choate Stock Mounting Problem?

Just got a new Choate Tactical stock for my Savage 12fv 223 bolt action. They don't really tell you this but the Savage blind magazine is smaller than the inlet in the stock so you have to do some creative shimming to make it work. After that frustration was over with, I go to seat the action and it doesn't seem right. Figuring it was a problem with the magazine, I take the mag out and just put the action and stock together without the magazine installed to see if that was the problem and I get this:

I could just be paranoid but take a look at these pictures and tell me if this is normal?

Any input would be helpful. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist and the little gap bothers me...

Do some reading on your rifle before you fuck things up, yes, that is supposed to be floating like that.

Now how bad did you booger up the mag well, or maybe we should first question whether or not you ordered the correct model stock to begin with...

Yikes, didn't realize I was being so ignorant. Take it easy on the newbie.

And...your post made me question what I had bought and I think you may be right. On second look this stock only specifies model 10, not model 12. In fact it appears that they don't make a tactical stock for a Savage model 12 with 4.4 inch action screw spacing. Darn.

Now I guess I decide, should I return it or should I shim the magazine in place.

RETURN IT.

Dont go shooting a rifle that is not properly fit into a stock. I makes the whole principal of using an aftermarket stock pointless and potentially unsafe. Its frustrating, I know, but if you are gonna do it, do it right. I dunno much on savages, or what choate offers on them, but if your out of luck on the Choate, trade it in for a B&C or a Stockade stock.

Seriously?? The tang is supposed to be floating 1/8" above the stock? I don't think so mate...

Curran, hopefully you've not modified the Coate stock in anyway trying to get the mag to fit. Chalk this one up to experience, send this one back and upgrade to something better.

model 10,12 whatever, its the same. It states model 10 because that is the basic short action, 110 is the basic long action. I bought a choate and had the exact same thing. The aluminum bedding block is too high in the stock. I took a dremel and sanded it down to fit better. Also the had the problem with the magizine slot being to big, I took some business cards to shim it in place. Overall was not too happy with the choate but could not spend alot on a savge

I e-mailed Choate to get a definitive answer on the whole deal. I'll let you guys know what they say. What Txgunnertx said: that is kinda what I thought. I was under the impression that all the short actions with 4.4" spacing were going to fit the same stocks. It seems that the fit of the Choate stock just isn't what it could be. They probably have to make the magazine well bigger so it will also fit 308?

That looks right to me.... I know it sounds and looks funny, but the "floating tang" on the Savage is how Choate sets the bedding blocks up to be. Ran my 10FP in Choate tacticals, never had any issues, always ran .5 moa.

Yea I would like to know what they say, if its supposed to float then screw that, it looks like shit. I figured I had just got one that the bedding block was too high in the rear, cause the front went right.

I have 3 setups , 2 has the gap , one does not ,has nothing to do with their shooting ability but, some prefer looks over shooting ?

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm glad I'm not the only one. The gap is right at the trigger assembly, I would be concerned about getting grit in there. Plus it looks like junk with a gap.

No word from Choate, I'll keep you all posted.

Go read up on bedding savages, you'll find that most float the tang, savages tend to like it, and perform better with a floated tang.

Read all you can on that, then decide where vanity comes into play.

Ok, did some reading on "floating the tang" and it makes sense. Thanks for the clue. Sometimes you just have to know what words to search for. "stock gap" gets you no answers

I think the "float" on this is just a little excessive, I can probably bring down the bedding block to close the gap down to 1/16". A tube about the size of the action to use as a sanding block should do the trick.

The tang on my Savage was touching the Choate stock and I filed it down until there was no contact and it tightened up my groups by approx 3/4".

FLOAT DAT TANG...but on a serious note. I have the same stock for a 110...tang is floated about 1/16th or so...rifle shoots .21-.26 with FGMM Remington Fan Boyz at the range hate me...

As long as your screw spacing is correct you should have no issues...on a SA as your 12 is it all boils down to screw spacing...sure the blind mag might have been tight but I dont think you could have got the action screws in if the stock spacing on your stock and action were not a match...bolt it to spec and shoot it...if every things good, then pull it apart and blue loctite it to spec and fa...git...about...it...

I would not under any circumstances mess with the V-Block bedding...it is central to making that stock and your action ACCURATE...

^^^^ absolutely do not grind on the bedding block. As it is from the factory, the angle built into it allows the block to grab in a narrow vertical pattern and only contact in an even layout.

If you sand and it is not perfectly inline, you will end up with mismatched blocks, an action pointing in who knows what directions, and uneven contact with the bedding blocks.

I would say if the seating depth is that big of an issue, contact Choate and see if they will exchange it for you.. but the next one will probably be the same. Also, as a side note, I have sanded the fiberglass around my tang on a B&C to make sure it floats.
