With all the choices how do you choose? LaRue, Noveske, DMPS, Armalite, LMT, JP, Baer, etc, etc. Looking for an 18" prairie dog accurate 556/223 upper with a bit more of a tactical vibe. Thanks.

Re: Choosing an Upper?

tactical prairie dog rifle doesn't help with choices necessarily...

The real beauty of an AR is it can be adapted to fit almost any person's needs. You can buy one completely stock and just start adding upgrades that you yourself feel are necessary. I caution buying a completely built rifle with mass "tacticool" items on it unless you know exactly what you want/need.

This is a good thread on the benefits to a mid length handguard/rail system and/or mid length gas.

you probably want a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel, but here is a thread on that:

you can use some specifics to further narrow your choices, such as:

Price
expected ranges for prairie dogs
side charge/ regular charging handle
continuos optics platform or regular gap between handguard and upper receiver
weight - prairie dog could mean your ok with heavier but tactical indicates you may want a lighter/middle of the road, or at least you want to start lighter...
if you want true tactical, save what you can at first and take a tactical course with your rifle to best determine upgrades you may need beyond a basic loadout

If I were compromising between varmint and tactikool I would look at this pretty hard: http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=271

However if you are serious about Prairie Dogs I would recommend gong with a 24" RRA Varmint or a White Oak. I've owned the RRA and a friend owns the WO in a 26". Both are very accurate rifles. Your gonna spend a lot of time prone on a Prairie Dog hunt and weight is a good thing. Optical requirements are also a bit different.

Been shooting PD's for quite a while now, I shoot 223 AI, TAC20, 6/250, 243 AI, 17M4, 221FB, and a few others all in bolt guns. I have an Eagle arms complete rifle that I have been thinking about putting a different upper on. I guess when I say tactical vibe I was thinking about a railed hand guard or even an upper like the Vltor VIS or kthe LMT MRP. I shoot dogs from all different positions, prone, roof of the truck, across the hood, maybe some day I'll buy one of those swiveling benches adn and mount it on a trailer.

You sound like a fellow addict. I've been shooting them for over forty years, (started when I was eight with a single shot 22 LR). Most of my favorite spots are on elevations over looking the dog town thus I shoot mostly from the prone. I've tried other calibers but these days I shoot just 223 and the rimfires. Life is simpler when you want to load up a few thousand rounds for a week long hunt. I'm fortunate in that we have a cabin that is within two hours drive of Prairie Dog Hunting in WY, CO and UT. I've managed to bag all the legal species; Black tail, White Tail, Gunnison, Zuni and Arizona. The Utah Prairie Dog is still protected but off the endangered list.

With the added criteria I would go with LMT.

Good hunting

Re: Choosing an Upper?

If you're going to be doing mostly prone/bi-pod type shooting, you might want to look at a side charging handle upper. I used an ASA for my Grendel for this reason.

Ouch, it looks like the price has gone up. Anyway, you can work the action from the shooting position, a large scope doesn't get in your way and you can still use brass catchers. It's very nice to use.
