Google loves to steal every bit of data it can about you. If you have a google anything account on your cell everything on your phone is being sent to google for review. EVERYTHING

They could have done lots of different designs to pay respect. Instead they chose grey color on boring font. They could have at least used boots, rifle and helmet 50% color in the background. The US flag... etc.

I guess the simple grey just seems quiet and respectful to me. Personally, I think it's more meaningful than if they'd done something with more ornamentation, since they ornament the logo so frequently for other, less-serious occasions. But that's just my opinion.

And to be fair, they do put flags and uniforms around their logo every year on Veterans Day:
