Cleaning a muzzle break.

I have a holland radial break. As you know it is indexed so that the holes on the top are pointing straight up. I do not want to remove the break all the time to clean it because it will end up not indexing right after a while. I have no problem getting the ports clean, but I am having a hard time getting all the carbon off the crown. The crown is recessed back into the break a bit, making it hard to get all the carbon of the crown. I have tried Qtips with solvent on them, and carb cleaner, but they are just not getting it all. It isnt hurting anything, but I like to get everything cleaned off when I do a big clean. Im looking for any tips or tricks that you all use to clean your breaks. Thanks.

Re: Cleaning a muzzle break.

Try some of the foaming cleaner (preferably the one with an accelerator) and let it sit.

I've used the Gunslick stuff and it works well enough (but FAR from perfect).

Also, if you clean the brake everytime you shoot it will not build up as bad.

Re: Cleaning a muzzle break.

Depending on if the crown ring is coated or is just bare metal, if it is bare metal you could try what we use in the military on our m4s.

Cut a wire coathanger fo you have a piece about 5" long. Hammer one end a few times to flatten it a bit, you dont want it TOO thin though. File the tip of the flattened end so its flat like a screwdriver.

Use this like a scraper to remove the built up carbon. The coat hanger is made of soft metal, I've never noticed it scratch the ring inside the M4s flash suppresor.

If the ring you want to clean is not bare metal, ie if its blued or coated, I wouldnt recomment the scraper because it will probably scuff the finish.

very carefully stand the rifle on its brake in a small enough container filled with GM top engine treatment or some other solution to de-carbon the item.....let is soak.....you'll figure out the rest
