Do not use water.
Try a quart of low odor mineral spirits mixed with a couple ounces of your favorite CLP. Give it a good pre-scrub with a brush then give it a bath. How long determines how dirty. Hope this helps.

Why clean so much? I have ARs that have been in monthly use for several years with only a 10 minute brush/wipe with CLP or whatever oil was on the bench and they are running perfectly (not talking about barrel cleaning).
The AR is a dirty system. It functions well with a bit of carbon as long as it is wet. Wet is the key to keeping any AR running. Carbon stays soft and in suspension...

I wipe mine down with some solvent on a rag and then a light coat of oil on the contact areas. Once every few range trips I will pull it apart and spray it down with gunscrubber and a toothbrush to get everything (GS also removes any lube or oil) off and start fresh.
An ultra sonic cleaner would be a nice luxury once in a while though, just to really get it down to bare metal...

The only thing I use my sonic cleaner for is brass for reloading.

The ultra sonic cleaning is amazing. But to go with what was said earlier, you don't need your ar to be scrubbed clean all the time. I only clean it that much when it is getting repaired or inspected.
