Cleaning rod recommendations Vudoo

Gentlemen, I've always just used a bore snake on my rimfires but have watched the Vudoo video on recommended cleaning which I will prescribe to.

I've got the bore guide in my cart on their web site but when it comes to a rod, are any of them just fine or are there specific brands I should look at?

Also I know for my CZ 452's I've seen it recommended to use a .20 cal rod instead of .22 because of the tightness. Would the same thing apply here or should I stick with a .22 cal rod?

I am assuming a 1-piece rod would be the best.

The Bore Tech cleaning rods are the best I have seen.

I am using a 20 cal Dewey rod with VFG felts (I turned the OD of the felt jag and thread adapter down quite a bit with an electric drill and sand paper to give more clearance in the bore). A quick note with the Vudoo bore guide (I have the original one they offered back when they first released them), the VFG 22 cal felt is a little tight going into the bore guide so I roll the tip of the felt between my fingers so it doesn’t get hung up. Also the bore guide I have which was introduced when the only action was the Gen I repeater does not fit in the Gen II repeater, it hits on the bolt guide pin in the top of the action. A few quick passes with a file, or die grinder with a roloc disc takes care of the fitment issue.

I have been using one peace carbon fiber Tipton rods for many years and love them. They come in many calibers and lengths for any gun and that is also what I use on my Vudoo. While I have never used a Bore Tech, I have never seen anything bad written about them and I do like many of their other cleaning supplies. As long as you use a good quality one peace rod you will be good to go.

problem is they are not stiff enough or hard enough and you are striving for ZERO flex in the bore. If you do get one, polish the hell out of it.
If possible try and get an IVY which are super hard, stiff, and mirror polished.
the absolute best available are the ones Stiller made. I think there are a few left at KSS. Very hard, stiff, melonited. These are not cheap($100+) but well worth it . Most guys have no idea how soft SS is and how easy it is to ruin a barrel with cleaning rod damage......don’t scrimp on a C,C+ grade rod.

Also, FWIW, DON’t buy a one piece guide made by anybody, the one by Vudoo with the insert helps a lot to minimize flex. I love the KSS ones because they seem tho have the longest inserts.

Thoughts I’ll add about the bore guides on vudoo’s website is make damn sure to get their custom one NOT the universal one if you even think you’re gna have clearance issues with your cheek piece.

I added a bore guide to my order and received the Delrin universal one made by bore tech with my rifle. It’s quality but lengthy, at 10.5” long.

I believe with the V22 in my xylo it will clear (currently has my nucleus in it)

In my mpa there’s zero chance of using it with out complete removal of the cheek piece; a known issue with the mpa chassis. It completely binds with about .5” to go. Does not matter if cheek piece is completely lowered or raised as the forward support rod is the way.

Side note And a PSA (because I was unaware and dumb), if you’re in that same boat with the mpa chassis and need to completely remove the cheek piece pay extra attention to the thumb wheel. If the thumb wheel gets removed from its slot the detent ball and spring will launch to the next dimension. (Not taking a photo of that, hunting for them was a bitch in my garage, a needs to add a small parts kit on their site for big dummies like me to buy.

The custom steel bore guide seems like it should be about two inches shorter total length when removing the insert. Hoping that one will allow me to run a guide rod in with out pulling out the cheek piece.

A suggestion for @RAVAGE88 . With the next batch of delrin rods from boretech please make them 1.25”-1.5” shorter. On the current batch there’s about 1.75-2” from the forward edge of the opening to the rear tang. I really like delrin guide despite the length issue.

There are a lot of opinions out there about bore snakes. Mine is I would not use a bore snake for cleaning. But, they do have their place. I use them while at the range to a initial swipe before I start shooting to clean out any dust or extra lube or while shooting if I am putting a lot of rounds down range. But, you need to clean them often, otherwise you are just dragging dirt down your barrel.

Boresnakes are for field "cleaning". they are not for regular cleaning stuff. good to have in the kit but only used when absolutely necessary, like i dropped my rifle in a swamp.

You should consider cutting back a good 1” or so off the breach end.
First, that really won’t do much to mitigate solvent seepage since none of these things go into the chamber and you shouldn’t slobber too much anyway.
The biggest improvement you get, however, is the ability to watch the rod and help keep it centered in the bore, especially since allowing the rod ANY flex/ misalignment will be right at that important leade.
Few of the custom 2piece guides go to breach for that reason.

Thanks Tim, that's good input and I appreciate the perspective. The feature you're referring to is one of the many that have to meet the requirement that the guide works in three generations of actions to include the magnum version of the Gen 2. In the magnum, the ejector is fixed further back from the breech face, so the relief cut is longer. If I were able to do multiple guides, or one specific to the magnum, I could get away with what you're describing....

It must be cleaned from the muzzle end. For extra cleanliness be sure and scrub the brass rod against the crown to remove any lead deposits. For heavily fouled barrels it is recommended to use a coarse valve grinding compound. Leave the lapping compound in and shoot to fire lap the barrel.

If you do this to your Vudoo it will take the accuracy level to the equivalent of the top of the line Escort rifles of European decent. "Sounds good"!

BTW, this is meant for your reading pleasure. Please do not try this at home. For that matter just don't try it at all. Keep dominating everyone else's ass like the boss you are. LOL.

The key is to remove the ejector when you clean. It is held by a single Allen screw and is easy to remove and replace sliding the allen key in though the mag well. If you do not remove, you run the chance of scraping up your rod. With the ejector out I expect any quality 1 peice ball bearing rod would work fine.

Exactly what @BigJimFish said just after your post. If one doesn't remove the ejector, the .20 cal rod is almost a must, but you create a weak point due to the smaller thread on the brushes and jags. I've always cleaned with a .22 cal rod and I don't always remove the ejector, but one scrapes their rod less or not at all by removing the ejector.
