Colorado Range Steel Stolen

If any one knows or hears anything please help get this stuff recovered. It took more then one person to move that much steel. I would hate to see this happen to other local ranges.

The Bureau of Land Management is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people who stole 3,000 pounds of steel range targets from the shooting range at 27 1/4 Road.
The thefts occurred sometime between Sept. 15, 2013, and Jan. 14. The targets are valued at more than $3,000. They were onsite waiting to installed as part of a joint BLM and Mesa County project to upgrade the popular shooting range.
The targets are high-caliber, long-range targets. They are oval and cut from high-grade steel, and about 1 3/4-inch thick, three feet tall and two feet wide. The oval targets were hanging from a steel frame.
Anyone with information in the thefts is encouraged to call BLM law enforcement at 244-3068.

Missing BLM Target

Here is a picture of the target. The targets do not have any BLM markings. They have gone through the local scrap dealers. If you see anything that looks similar contact Christopher Joyner with a license plate number or some means of tracking down the party. Thanks Everyone.

For the record, I hate thieves and liars. The folks that took the steel are probably both, and obviously not real bright. I'd think long and hard about cobbing something from fella's that are practicing marksmanship skills from a loooooong ways away. We had about the same amount of AR500 plate stolen here behind our shop. It took someone a while to get it because we used a Bobcat to stack it. I went around to all the local recycling places and they said that not many recyclers are equipped to take loads that large, and referred me to the big guys. Maybe it is the same around there.

I chased a guy down who stole 2 big tug boat props from our house boat parking area. I helped unload em with 2 other guys and they were heavy. He was going to the scrap yard. My glock in hand was the only reason I followed him cause them things are heavy and he was alone. I followed him and got plate# then called police and they said back off. I did and they got him up the road. I hope these thieves get caught.

I just lost a target set up on BLM land here in California. It was hard to get to, requiring a hike in and a short climb so they must have been motivated. Never thought it would happen.

We have had a recent problem with people stealing cast iron drop inlet grates and manhole covers from our buildings which weigh several hundred pounds. Truck pulls into the truck court and drops a wheel into the hole and damages the truck.

Its a bad situation, at some point the folks are going to stop putting up targets. The ranges they have done have been great, it would be sad to see them go away. Hopefully someone comes across something that points in a direction of who is involved in these thefts, before it ruins it for everyone else.

I was shooting at 1600 yds at my steel target and a guy pulled up in his truck and attempted to steal it while I had my rifle and scope on the target. It took lots of honking and lying back down behind my rifle to get him to leave. I think he must have not seen me or thought that I was too far to be able to hit that target. The audacity of some people.

Just put one over his head. Hopefully the round would still be supersonic and he'd then have to drive home with "full pants". Would take a while for him to get the stain out of the seat as well as "airing out" the vehicle.

There, that's better. At some point, the criminal members of society need to receive a message that their ways won't be tolerated. Though I'm not in favor of Sharia law at all, a few dead perps or a lot wandering around minus one hand would be a great deterrent.

Many years ago I went hiking with a group. They'd been conducting these hikes an an annual basis and had campsites they used every trip. At each of the campsites there was a huge cast iron griddle (took two men to carry) that was cached near the campsite. In order to protect it from the elements they just melted parafin on the surface and when cold actually buried it nearby.

For target steel set up on public land, one could do the same. Paint the steel with a good rust resistant paint, enclose it in a garbage bag (HD Contractor stylle) and bury it nearby it's desired position. Cover the area with dead native vegetation to conceal. Only needs to be a few inches down. A lot easier to carry a small shovel than a heavy steel target or two.

I too despise theives. Last year in the county I grew up in there was an elderly couple who heard a noise under their house ~ 0300. Turns out it was a couple guys under there tearing out copper pipe while they were sleeping. Talk about balls. When Boogers get on meth, they care not about property lines and ownership. Many times the scrap yards are just as guilty as the scrappers.

I've taken a few friends down to my 1000yd range to shoot - have six full-size IPSC steel targets that probably weigh 55-60lbs ea. Someone always asks why I go to the trouble to load them all up and take 'em home with me when we're finished shooting for the day. The range is way off the beaten path on private property, they say. Well, 25-30yrs ago, it might've been OK to have left them there, but today - even out here in the middle of no where in western Kansas - I'm not taking the chance.

I'm going to send a link to this thread to friends who've got their own ranges - better safe than sorry. Best of luck to the BLM & Burris/Greely Co. in getting your steel back - hope the bastards that stole it got hurt bad enough in the process so they can't do anything like that again.

Around here it's not just stuff like this that the turds steal. We had an incident where a couple of these parasites took a pair of bolt cutters, wrapped an inch thick layer of electrical tape on the handles, then cut the underground power lines to almost a mile of freeway lighting ------- While fully powered. They then took the end of the now dead wires, tied them off to their truck, and pulled the full stretch from the underground conduit.

All that copper wire was then cut into shorter pieces and no doubt sold to a recycler and the taxpayers ended up with a repair bill that ran into 6 figures. It's to the point where all service access panels to underground wiring are welded shut in order to stop the theft. Highways, Ball Fields, and even hanging phone cables. If it were up to me, I'd be arresting a whole bunch of "Recyclers" that just "wink" when they buy the stuff.

Last month the IWLA club in Mt .Airy, Maryland had 2 industrial sized air conditioners stolen from the club house.

Lock on the gate cut and units ripped out of the wall.

A sign of the times .

And this will continue until there are some bodies laid out. More than a few PO'd landowners are now shooting at those that like to prowl their property looking for things to steal. Some of the prowlers in my State have been hauled off by the Coroner.

One of our guys had steel on a secondary road from a practice the night before and it was gone when we finished the match the following day. He had several targets out in the road and this was the close one. Not sure why they did not take the others. Luckily he got tire and foot prints but that is it. His stand was also unique, so hopefully we can find the scum. It is a sign of the times. We are worried since we have 60+ pieces of steel out there but most not visible from the road.
