Colt M4 LE6920 at Wal-Mart

I bought the Colt 6920 LE at Wal-mart yesterday. First Gun I ever purchased from Wal-mart. I usually wouldn't even consider buying a rifle from Wal-mart, but this was an impulse buy as it was begging me to take it away from all the dumb-a**es who work in the sporting goods, so I gave it a proper home. The new Asst. Manager at this store is actually a gun collector and avid shooter. He told me he had to send back the Colt 6920 SP's that they had in stock, and they where replaced with the Colt 6920 LE's.

Only difference I see in these LE models at Wal-mart is that they don't have the Military/Police/Government use only marking on the other side of the Mag well. They are marked Colt Defense, which is usually the Government only manufacturer, whereas Colt Manufacturing is the civilian manufacturer. My LE6920 had the Roger's Super-Stoc with it.

My local gun dealer would sell these for $1500.00+. They sell PMags for $25.00. They sell Mark 4 rings for $220.00. Screw that.
I hope this forces more competition in the marketplace. I don't mind spending a little extra to get the extra service and knowledge of a gun shop (even that is getting harder to find), but I will not take it in the ass out of some sense of loyalty.

Your right, I am always glad to support a local dealer, but 400 dollars more is a lot of money, I might could work with 50-100 for the quality service.

The Asst Manager told me Wal-mart charges a 19% mark-up on these Colts. That's not unreasonable, as a lot of dealers Charge more for a Colt name mark-up. That means Wal-mart is paying $922 and selling them for $1097. Any dealers care to share what their mark-up is on these Colts? Would be interesting to see what most dealers have to pay for these.

I have never purchased a firearm from Wal-mart until now. The Remington 870's and the AR's look to be the same that any other dealer gets. Although Wal-mart has been known in the past to have berreta make cheaper semi auto's for them exclusively. When you go by a firearm you should research and know what your buying. Wal-mart is using the same distributor as some of the local dealers. Granted I would rather go to the Gun Shop instead of Wal-mart if they can get close. Lot's of other stores online where blowing out these Colts under 1100, so I am skeptable on the average mark-up. One of my local dealers wanted 1500 for this rifle. That's what struck the impulse buy when I seen it in Wal-Mart.

I am a small time gun dealer mainly doing special orders from home for people local and I charge a 5% fee or $50 which ever is lower. My price on this gun is $979+$21 to ship it to me which puts it at $1000 add my 5% in and that puts it at $1048.95 and then you have the sales tax to contend with. What you are not looking at is the overhead of the rent and insurance as well as payroll that the gunshops must make in order to stay in business. I have 0 overhead and do my sales as a hobby and transfers for people on off hours because I enjoy it. The gun stores have to make enough money to stay afloat and they do not carry all the other stuff walmart carries to keep there heads above water.

What is going to happen when all the local gun stores go belly up and then your walmart decides not to carry guns any longer as a lot of the stores have and then you are stuck driving a long ways to another chain store to buy your guns.

I do still buy most of my reloading stuff and some gun parts local just to "spread the wealth" if you will. I can order it in cheaper through dealer discounts but if I can have it now and help support my local shops I figure it is the least I can do.

That is a Good price!

Let say you have a store front. If you can buy it at 979 and you where to charge 1165, which is a 19% mark-up (same as Wal-mart), that would not be unreasonable considering you have overhead. The local dealer is going to make 186 dollars, which is a good haul, and not sticking it in the customers a**. I would pay 1165 to the local dealer. I can't see 1500. The dealer would probably benefit by gaining more sales if the mark-up wasn't so high. Enough increase in sales could offset or surpass the lower mark-up, and increase profit.

Walmart runs some tough policies with their suppliers. They try to build a relationship where they become the only customer, due to the volume of goods they buy than they squeeze the crap out of their supplier. Vlassic pickles was almost croaked by them because they were selling almost all their production to WalMart. Walmart kept squeezing them on price (They wanted to sell 5 gallons of pickles or something like that for $3.00 or some cheap number). Vlassic went along with it thinking they would be able to make a buck on the volume. Than Walmart finally got to a price point that they could not make a profit on and when Vlassic asked for some loyalty for the relationship WalMart basically said "Cant meet our price see you later". Vlassic had to scramble to try to get customers to keep them in businees after losing WalMart.

Do I agree or disagree with this practice. I think its kind of crappy but its business, Vlassic didnt have to go there.

Colts main Customer is the Govt. I dont think the firearm business is one Walmart will be able to bend to their will. They will have more impact on snack food makers than guns. They can out compete the LGS but what do you expect when the LGS has to buy their own insurance, probably pay rent and buying in smaller lots they lose volume discounts. Its unfair to think the LGS can compete with WalMart.

And keeping the prices reasonable will assure that the local gun store will still be around. In my case the friendly talk and service at the gun shop was not worth the extra 400 dollars, when I know exactly what I am buying. It is worth a little more but not that much more. I want to support the local dealer as much as possible as long as they are reasonable, and I have supported them a lot in the past.

.Competition is a good thing. Always. Having knowledgeable staff, trained techs, accessories, and gun shop atmosphere is the gun shop's niche. As long as they dont let prices get out of hand they will have plenty of customers. I usually prefer the better deal.....Walmart has saved a lot of people money, and made money doing it. If Mom and Pop wanna grow, buy in bulk, get better deals, and compete, its a free country.

I try to shop local and avoid box stores as much as possible. However, my local gunshops do not offer any sort of customer service or knowledge that would justify my paying more at them. They cater to the same crowd that typically buys guns at Wal-Mart, i.e. Mossberg 500/835s, 870 Expresses, and Savage Axis'.

I agree with the post above that my local gun shops would charge over $1,500 for the same Colt. Here are two conversations I've had with employees at my local gun shop recently;

ME: "I need a five pound jug of RE-15"
LGS: "We only carry one pound jugs, a five pound jug will go bad. It would take someone years to use that much powder"
ME: "I'm still shooting powder that I bought almost 20 years ago, it's fine. Five pounds of RE-15 will last me less than six months. I take it you don't reload much."
LGS: "No, I'm scared to reload. I'd probably blow myself up."

ME: "I'm here to pick up my rifle that I had sent here from a Gunbroker auction. My name is USMC mustang"
LGS: "Here it is, what is thing? I ain't never seen one before"
ME: "It's a FAL. This one was made by DSA on a Austrian parts kit"
LGS: "What caliber is it?"
ME: "7.62"
LGS: "like an SKS?"
ME: "No, like .308"
LGS: "That's a cool looking gun, did they just come out with these?"
ME: "No, they've been making them since 1954"
LGS: "Seriously?"
ME: "Yea, it was adopted by over 90 countries as their main battle rifle. Over 2,000,000 were produced."
LGS: "So it's like an AR-15 or something."

Bottomline, LGS are nice guys but I'm not paying more to benefit from their product knowledge. There has only been one gun store (Virginia Arms Company) where I would have paid more for their CS and the product knowledge of their employees.

Walmart- Some bimbo at the sporting goods counter hands you the gun you asked for. You hand it back, say I'll take it, she gets the box and she takes you the customer sevice desk and hands it to another bimbo. She has no idea what is, and is only concerned with the bulge in your pants, but she weighs 250#'s so it's not an issue. Do the paper work and pay for it, you're on your way home to fondle it.

Local Gun Shop- You ask to see a gun, he hands it to you, you run it through a series of checks, tell him you want it. Whoa, here comes the fun, this self proclaimed genius starts preaching the virtues of some other POS for three hundred bucks more than the one you wanted. And, when he starts talking, here come the 3-5 fucktards to extoll the qaulities of their preferred firearms. Then it's my junk is bigger than your's, oh boy!
So as you're walking out the door empty handed, wishing you would have stayed home and pissed in a fan for the afternoon's entertaiment, you're asking WTF happened here???

I have the same experiance as USMC mustang, and milo have had with LGSs. It seems, around here at least, that walmarx and the LGSs hire from the same pool of idiots, but at least the people at walmarx let you know when their knowledge of a topic is nonexistent. Too bad our walmarx don't sell firearms; they stopped selling firearms in CA 10 years ago. The only gun shop around these parts that is decent is RifleGear.

If your local dealer is ripping you off the ask if they will do transfers at a reasonable cost. If you know exactly what you want, Search the internet and buy the gun from another dealer out of state and have it shipped to yours. On a $1000 gun the saving on sales tax should more than cover a transfer fee and atleast you didnt get it from Wal Mart.

I have an FFL/SOT as well and do this stuff from home as a hobby and know what these guns cost. I normally charge locals 10% mark up. A storefront dealer should not charge over 20% in my opinion. If a dealer is charging you $1500 for this gun he should be locked up for rape.

A lot of small gun shops have employees like the ones that work at wal-mart. There is one good local gun shop near me where the owner and his employees know a little something, but their prices are sometimes outrageous. Every now and then you can get a deal on something they have been sitting on for 3 years or more.

I called another close Walmart sporting goods desk out of curiosity today, and asked if they had a Colt M4 in stock. I told them it was an AR-15 style rifle. They said they had a Colt M4 1911. This confused me for a moment. I asked did the rifle have a serial that started with LE on the receiver. She told me all it says is that it is a Colt M4 1911. I said Colt doesn't have a model called a M4 1911. She said, "I beleive this one comes with a pistol ". It then hit me, she was referring to an airsoft package.

Most of my gun purchases have been over the internet in the past ten years. I live close to jacksonville in Fl and the LGS are always high. I will use a local business if they are competitive, but when you can go through gunsamerica and find other shops selling for 100 bucks less, a penny saved...is the start of my next gun purchase

There was a local gunshop in town that had competative prices, $15 transfers, and always had people there buying firearms and accessories. Very pleasant guy to do buisness with, and never tried to pressure you to buy anything. One day I go in to do a transfer on a SIG556, and owner didn't even charge me a fee for the transfer saying I've bought plenty from him. Unfortunitly, the owners Mother had health issues with the high altitude, and he had to close down and move to Florida. Shortly before he closed down, another store in town opened up. It's now the the one and only true local gun shop. He sells RRA AR's for $1500, and Glocks for $700. Needless to say, I've never bought a firearm from them. Everytime I go in to see what they have, I feel like I'm dealing with used car salesmen, trying to sell you something you don't need or want. After the other store closed down, I went in and introduced myself to the owner, and gave him some friendly advice (I had experience helping a friend who was an FFL back in the late 80's and early 90's.) Told him what local shooters wanted for ammo, and what they where willing to pay. I provided him with info needed for him to get ammo at very good discount pricing, and told him he could move a lot of inventory (i.e profit) if he kept his pricing down. Well, he sells 7.62x39 and 223 Rem for $20 to $30 a box, and mostly stocks hunting ammo for $60 plus a box. No Match, or Surplus ammo, and very little Plinking ammo, etc. I think all the locals go to Walmart to buy ammo. I do all my transfers through the local Pawn Shop for $20 I do all my purchases on-line, and only buy ammo from Walmart when I need a box or two for the local USPSA event.

I'm wondering being it is sold to Wal Mart if they manufacturer this weapon to the same US Govt issued TDP?

Listed are most of the important items but not all that our Military requires.

The bolt is magnetic particle inspected, as is the barrel Mil-SPEC Barrel Steel- which is "4150" grade steel not "4140.

The shot peened bolt is pressure tested, as is the barrel. The proper extractor spring and black insert are present. The gas key is well staked.

The M-16 Bolt Carrier (Full-Auto)- this is the carrier that is in spec for the rifle, not the AR-15 semi-auto.

M4 Feedramps.

MIL-SPEC Receiver Extension "H" buffer- this is the part in spec for the rifle to run with and withstand the recoil forces of the heavier M-16 Bolt Carrier.

If it is then you have yourself a pretty good weapon.

Contrary to popular belief civillians are allowed to purchase a Colt 6920 with the LE/Mil restriction stamped on the receiver unless you kive in one of our commy states.

There is a reason Colt is producing them this way and I am wondering if they are taking short cuts and not adhering to the TDP which is more costly and more important don't have to adhere to this standard to sell to the civilian market.

Just a thought.

I have not found a Local gun shop worth a shit in probably 20 years. 99% of the small shops I have been in have had customer service on par with Walmart.
Now a days everyone is trying to make top dollar on every sale, yes times are tough for all of us. Uncle Sam pays me twice a month, and never any extra for out of touch prices.

The small guys have it tough, they have to cover operating costs, and everyone has a computer and will check prices before heading to the shop. This turns into internet sales and FFL transactions at the shop, which definitely does not help Mr fucking cheery personality behind the counter much with his customer service. I would love to buy local. But, I can pay $50-$60 shipping to AK for a rifle, plus FFL fees and still beat any shop in town, I'd say that is why the little guys are going TU.

I wish I had a small shop to hit where the selection was good, the salesman knowlagable and prices within reason....this is usually not reality today. I drove from NC to AK two years ago and hit about every gunshop I passed, I'd say Walmart is safe as far as gun sales go.

Its too bad, but this is what I have seen over the years. It is nice to be able to look at a gun on the rack, pick one with a nice stock and walk out the door with it, but when that convenience costs $100 over what the price should be thats a lost sale. I can wait the four days for shipping.

Not to mention this board is packed with guys with firearms OCD as bad as mine, when I think " man I want one of these" I check the classifieds here and BAM!! theres a great deal on one. I need to somehow block the for sale board, especially at night after a few drinks, my GAP has had a babies in the safe!! Its a viscious cycle.

Colt and my main distributor actually offer 5 versions of the LE 6920 @ a dealer cost ranging from $935.28 to $1322.35...

so there are versions that I can sell for Walmart's price, but there are also versions that the guy who mentioned a local dealer wanting $1500 for isn't outragious...

my point is that you might want to make sure you're comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges before you judge assuming the rifle bought at walmart was the lowest dealer cost LE 6920... walmart has approx. a 16% mark up.... assuming a local small dealer has a LE6920 "socom" in stock for $1500, he's at approx 14% markup...

doesn't seem like the local guy is screwing you too bad, if that's the case... but I often get "customers" that swear they can get XXXX at a lower price somewhere else, but come to find out, it's a cheaper version.

Seems there are a lot of local gun shops over priced. Online dealers realised this almost a decade ago, and are taking a chunk of the market. Now some Wal-marts want in. I was told by an employee while in sporting goods that they would special order any non in stock item that the distributor offers or has for 50% down. Although from what I have seen, you are better off to order from an online store, some prices include free or cheap shipping, then all you have extra is the transfer fee, which is most likely cheaper than the taxes. After looking, I have seen the LE6920 cheaper online than what I paid at Wal-mart. This was a pure impulse buy at Wal-mart. I seen it, had some extra cash, and had to have it right then

It appears that being this being the case, Colt is doing something different AND cutting corners between version #1 and # 5.

I know now they are not adhearing to the TDP.

that is an understatement, colt has been bought an sold several times, I would own a colt, no clue who makes them now. There are so many better manufacturers out there now it is really a no brainer

I will agree that there is stuff out there just as good and better. CMMG has a M4 that's barrel is CHF with 4150, 1/7 twist version with what they call WASP” finish instead of chrome, which they say provides excellent corrosion resistance and improved accuracy. Also has a Back up sight. I've heard good things about the CMMG and for 720 it might be the best deal in the AR15 Carbine market. The Colt 6920 is one of the highest quality M4 type AR's out there priced at 980-1200. I paid 1097 plus tax, but could probably have looked for a better deal, although I believe it was well worth 1097. I've seen them at 1500 which is ridiculous.

I bet the price discrepancy among the five sub models alluded to is for the furniture and accessories slapped on them especially with one called a "socom", and has nothing to do with the internals. Look here: http://www.coltsmfg.com/Catalog/ColtRifles/ColtCarbinesI.aspx
It says nothing about milspec anywhere, which while a sign an AR is not made with junk parts, is not the be all and end all, aside from the M4 ramps those specs were written 50yrs ago, processes, finishes, coatings, and alloys have come a long way since then, just because the military is sticking with what they know does not by any means make it the best and only way to build ARs or anythin else.

Good point.

I just built a BCM Middy (14.5 CHF barrel 1 in 7) for about 1000$ that I will put up against any DI rifle out their for reliability and performance. I would even put it up against my piston driven AR's.

It is cool having a "Colt" though. Enjoy the rifle!

Colt is not at all overrated. They build superior fighting guns to those like DPMS, RRA, Bushmaster, etc. When somebody says "just as good as" it usually isn't.

I know now they are not adhearing to the TDP.

You "know" it based on there are different priced options? Did you consider some versions come with different sights, different stocks, different grips, etc? Does that necessarily mean they cut the quality of the innards? Of the units I've seen on the "low" end, they continued to adhere to TDP, but didn't include Magpul stocks, different BUIS, etc. They were just the run of the mil LE6920 that was the ONLY option for a 6920 five years ago.

Please don't gt me wrong here. No offense but your statement -" Does that necessarily mean they cut the quality of the innards?" can go both ways. I don't know that they did take shortcuts and you don't know they didn't. The huge price difference I would think amounts to more then the BUIS, Stocks, etc.

I guess we will have to wait to see because it will eventually come out.

Agree the TDP is not the be all end all. The TDP is a "standard" and while written years ago it is still a standard that others company's do not have to follow.

FN and Colt do as welll as some smaller companies.

That is what sets Colt, FN, and some of the others apart. Don't get me wrong here, Colt , FN, Bushmaster, DPS all make problem weapons.

Statistics however show that there are a greater number of problems with other manufactures that do not conform to a "standard."

I do "KNOW" that the standard LE6920s I've examined lately (the ones selling for about $1000) all had staked gas keys, 1:7" MP marked barrels, staked receiver extensions, H-buffers, etc.

Colt LE6920s have long been the standard and they have not deviated in the past, other than large-pin FCGs. There is no evidence that they have changed. Why would one assume they had? The sun has risen every day I've been on planet earth. Should I assume it wont' tomorrow?
