My thoughts:
1. Comey got his ego all blown up when 60 Minutes wrapped him in Captain Murica bunting and placed him on the Rushmore waiting list. That was when they liked him for not signing off on Bush era wiretapping orders, before they wanted him fired for implying wrong-doing by Holy Hillary, before they were outraged over Trump firing him for being flaky as fuck. He is self-important, and even though he said otherwise in testimony, he believes himself to be a shining beacon of truth of justice in a sewer of corruption and injustice.
2. His pre-testimony memo was brilliant. He got valuable feedback on what it would take for him to be indicted or not for felonies for not presenting damning evidence of the president obstructing justice. Put it out there, and see what the sharks make of it. Smart.
3. His future book promotion tour is off to a Helluva start. I mean that in the most malicious and accusatory way possible. I think he had sensationalism and controversy selling books in the back of his mind on every action and answer.
4. The swamp don't want to be drained, and the enemy of an enemy is indeed a friend. This is a bi-partisan effort to control or completely remove Trump.
