Coming soon to a PRS match near you.

Hi,

Well that article is sort of misleading since there has been no weapon system chosen to receive the awarded contract status yet.

The Mk48 Mod 2 would have to be revised in a few areas to handle the high pressure cartridge systems the Next Generation Squad Weapon is required to handle/operate at. In its' current state the Mk48 Mod 2 is not designed/built to handle the high pressure from the new cartridges.

The high pressure ammunition is a separate solicitation/tender and eventually awarded contract.

Sincerely,
Theis

Hi,

Back at office so I can get more official and details on the NGSW project.

Note the Title of the announcement: Prototype Project Opportunity Project.
Also Note: The Prototype OTA Test events are up to 8 years with 27 months of that dedicated to revising prototypes and such.
Also Note: It is for 6.8 not 6.5

So in short.....The NGSW 6.8 is likely not to hit the field any time soon.

Makes one wonder why 6.8mm. In a machine gun at extreme velocities maybe for improved barrier performance over the SAW? Any detail on the cartridge or how long the bullets being looked at are?

Edit: Article cites increased range. I guess assuming they go with a .270ish projectile in 140grn it could touch .5 G1 BC. With high velocity it should reach out and touch nicely with a wallop.

Hi,

Now factor in running that type of combo at 85-90k pressures :)

Sad that the autos are embracing higher pressure ammunition combinations faster than the bolt gun sector is willing to do.

IF we up'ed operational "SAAMI" pressures to 90k across the board for centerfire ammunition....it is going to open the next chapter in centerfire capabilities and advancement.

Edited To Add:
In regards to ammunition...It is 2 different types....Telescopic Case design and traditional case design but the numbers currently are:
6.8 projectile pushed at 3,500 fps from a 16" barrel.

"Cased Telescopic" in the right:
XM1186 on the left:
