Neither. Society would operate just fine without either branch of paid "heros". People would weed out bad people on their own. No cops needed to be honest.
I applaud the volunteer firefighters/paramedics though. They have helped a lot here in my local community. Its miles away from any "real" city and the volunteers here are always johnny on the spot. 10-15min wait max. Good group.

Having to out up with all the entitled little fucks swings my vote to LEO's. That and there is a severe hatred towards them from many people who would love nothing more than to kill them or sue the fuck out of them.

Years back I am in a delicatessen in brooklyn ordering a sammich for lunch, 6 or 7 firefighters walk in that had just come back from a fire.
The TOXIC BURNT STUFF odor that came off of them was unbearable. People were gagging and walking out. They were used to the smell and it apparently did not bother them.
Police:
Transit Strike 3am, two cops on foot patrol at the picket line making sure nothing bad happens. Police cruiser with two cops pulls up and we all start bullshitting. Two minutes later we see flashes and hear multiple gun shots not 75 yards away, Cruiser cops with their mouths open look at the foot cops like oh fuck do we really need to go there.
Off they went.

If you call for help here, it's the fire dept that shows up. Good folks that don't make enough to live on their fire dept income alone (here, other areas are surely different). I have a lot of respect for them.
I’d say neither are making bank. I have many friends that are either or. Most of them work more than one job. They make pretty good but considering what they have to go through with rescuing crackheads or reviving gangbangers I’d say neither have it easy, nor get paid all that great for what they do. I’d give the edge to LEO only because they have to interact with BS more and are more likely to fall into harms way. With that said, both can have down time. Some fire departments never get called hardly. One by my work washes the trucks and personal cars and works out more than anything else. Other departments that my friends work at might have 36 call outs a night or more but they are on a ahem more active side of town, so to speak. Frankly I’m not sure why anyone would want to be either these days.
I know i could not do the job of either running into a building while its on fire is not natural god bless them for saving lives.
Cops not being able to just shoot someone when you yell stop making you run sounds counter productive another job i could not do. enforcing the law as it is written not as you wish it was is almost superhuman not to mention putting up with every person in your city bs without hitting them to till they could no longer bitch and cry its amazing more don't go postal . little pay high stress that's a lot to put up with on a job and everything or choice you make could impact a life no way.... guess i could not do either job i am happy that someone can and, I do admire both professions , and my family members that hold those jobs i respect and thank for there service ..

I know a fireman that almost got fired for taking a shit inside a building that was fully engulfed.

I would personally say fire fighters since the vast majority are volunteer last I checked once you get away from the big cespools.
Nothing against the PO's I just don't have any real use for them considering 95% of the time they show up afterwards to clean up the mess or are lightening your wallet for some petty traffic bullshit.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I have respect for LEO's and I'm not ashamed of THAT. I'm ashamed of 'anyone' bad in any organization, so that isn't directed at one particular field.
But, I grew up in a "Volunteer Fireman" household, as my dad started doing such when I was 3. He did that for 21 years and when the siren went off (day or night) or later (I was 11) when he got the 10/10 in the house, we'd all hear it and he'd go running.
Turn-out pants and boots beside the bed so he only had to step into them and haul up the suspenders as he was running down the hallway. So my vote here was for the firemen, obviously.

I do have to give props to some nurses. Not all. Ive met some really nice ones. That were good at their job. And some real bitches that would have rather been somewhere else, not helping people. They just wanted the clout of working in the medical field.

I got a stethoscope to fight with drunks and methheads with. No taser or pepper spray. Once had a jerk with HIV spit a lugi (sp) in my face shortly after I was married. He did 9 months in county before that was a felony in CO. Its fun to go home and tell your new wife you might get HIV because you got a couple scratches on your face rock climbing the day before. A rubber for a year after newly married aint a picnic friends. Hell, even kisses become suspect.......
But really boys, I didn't do it for the pay. I couldn't join .mil due to asthma. I always wanted to and couldn't. So I figured I would do what I could here at home. I have helped a ton of folks of all walks of life. Did CPR on babies, some made it, some didn't. Another day came and we did it all again. Made some of the best friends I ever had between my life as a nurse and a volunteer fireman. Only so much stuff you see together and you are stuck together for life.
I say anyone who truly gives of themselves for the greater good. Labels are for Peter measuring pansies. I bet @canman and @Garvey will attest. See the ones who sign up to be a hero. They are gone before you need new boots. The ones who do it for the right reasons retire from it if they can deal with the stress. For some, like .mil, the stress is deep and hits hard and a few years is enough. NO judgment.
Hats off to those who do to help other. FF, Police, nurses, teachers, and others I am forgetting.

Let's see, I know a ff, a Lt in the San Francisco FD. Makes almost $200k a year before OT. Works an average of 7 days a month yet can only see his kids 2x a month cuz busy at work and gots stuff to do.

Firemen get paid to sleep half the time. When fire is needed there's 5 minutes of tones to wake them up before dispatch gives the call.
Then, lots of times, they'll stage down the block until cops make sure the scene is secure.

I know I've had friends that became firemen, early 20's full of piss and vinegor and not enough action equals trouble.
One ended up a parmedic and has been happy since.

Yeah, look into that. I've got going on 18 years on my career FD. We make a living. $82k is what I made last year. Look at the cost of living in North Texas, and you will have your ratio. We make a living, but massive is not the proper word.
Oh, and Obama fucked us royalty with health insurance. When I got hired on the FD, my health insurance cost me $0 per month. Now it costs me $300 per month, and my wife and kids are not on it, they are on my wife's because it is a better deal. And I have to have $10k sitting in savings in case I have a health problem, because that is now out of pocket before insurance kicks in for the year. So if any of you voted for Obama, you need your balls cut off so you cannot contaminate the rest of the world.
Texas Municipalities have the best retirement system in the country. The trick is staying long enough to not only use it, but get enough back out to live on. But don't stay on the job too long, because you will leave all that money to your family, because you are dead.
Who dies more? Now it is neither, again, thanks to Obama and his war on Police. 100 Firemen die in the line of duty each year, and the majority of those are heart attack and stroke. Those of you poking fun at us sleeping on the job, please PM me your phone number. I will text you every time we get a call, and you get up and walk, just walk, around your house business, whatever. I will text you again when we get back to the station. Leave you phone on 24 hours straight by the way. That is why most of our deaths are heart attack and stroke. We don't get to sleep near enough for the course of our lives. It is the most difficult part of my life, lack of sleep.
Back to Police dying. The population has lost respect for Law Enforcement, and followed Obama's lead challenging Police. For the first time in my memory more Police have died than Firemen for the last few years.
Here's some more good news. More Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS committed suicide in 2018 than died LODD, and that is a shame.
Having said all that, I am not going to vote. Of course I've got many friends that are Fire/EMS like me. I've also got many friends that are Police, Sheriff Deputies, and a Texas state trooper. And I would go to the gates of hell with a pocket knife to help them, and they would do the same for me.

Healthcare workers and doctors are among the truly unsung heroes of our peacetime society. When my father had to undergo extensive operations and hospital stays, I had a first hand glimpse at all the shit that nurses and hospital staff had to deal with on a minute to minute basis. From drug addicts and bums in the ER to family members of patients being pugnacious and aggressive for no reason in the inpatient areas. That is why I go out of my way to thank my father's caretakers during his stays and make sure that they know that we are grateful for the services that they provided.
A police officer tussling with a drunk miscreant, getting scraped up and possibly getting contaminated by whatever shit that drunk may be carrying, can very often make the news and the officer will receive a public acknowledgement of his efforts...........Nurses, attendants, triage staff, and hospital security officers have to do this kind of thing constantly. It is not that often that they have been given recognition on the blotters or newspapers.
Most paid FFs are EMRs, EMTs or Paramedics as well. It's not 1992 Backdraft at most small city fire houses anymore. Maybe in the Chicagos, Bostons and New Yorks of the world. But not in your average municipality large enough to have a full time FD but too small to not care what we do on a daily basis.
