Arlington Heights police said Monday that an attempted home invasion that ended with one suspected perpetrator dead and another in custody does not appear to be a random attack.
Charges are still pending against the suspect captured after the Saturday home invasion on the 2400 block of North Evergreen Avenue, on the village's north side, according to police. The case is now in the hands of the Cook County state's attorney's office, which is reviewing evidence and other information before approving formal charges, authorities said. Village Manager Randy Recklaus wanted "to stress" Monday night, during a village board meeting, that the attack was not random. "The investigation indicates that this was an isolated and targeted act against a specific address," he said.
"An arrest was made, and there is no threat to the general public related to that situation," Recklaus added. Reached Monday, the owner of the home where the attack occurred declined to comment. Authorities on Sunday identified the man found dead in the residence as Larry D. Brodacz, 58, of Buffalo Grove. After an autopsy, the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police confirmed on Monday that Brodacz had an extensive criminal history dating to the 1980s.
Then a locksmith, Brodacz faced a series of charges for burglaries and a home invasion on the North Shore, according to published reports. In 2002, the U.S. Department of Labor sued Brodacz and his Arlington Heights-based Atlas Lock & Key for failing to forward $9,816.52 in employee 401(k) contributions. He was jailed for credit card fraud from January to October 2000, during which time Atlas ceased doing business, federal officials said. Arlington Heights police Cmdr. Joe Pinnello said authorities are aware of Brodacz's criminal history, but there is no record of illegal activity more recently. "We had no indication this person would act in this manner," he said.
A video that began circulating online over the weekend shows the frightening early moments of the home invasion. The 66-second video taken from the homeowner's Ring security camera shows the two men -- wearing face masks and gloves -- approaching the house.
One opens the screen door and knocks, and when the homeowner answers, the masked duo walk inside before an apparent struggle ensues off-camera. The camera next picks up the homeowner pushing one of the suspects out of the door, knocking him to the ground and beating him. The suspect runs away, tripping and falling in the street before the video ends.
The accomplice, still in the house, was armed with a gun and had been shot, according to the resident who called 911 at 1:57 p.m. The four residents of the house got out safely by the time police arrived. But a large regional police response, including a SWAT team, was dispatched to the scene since they were immediately unaware of the armed man's status, Pinnello said.

Yep. I’ve started carrying at home with the current craziness. I hadn’t before since we live in a pretty quiet neighborhood, but my mindset’s been changed with recent events. I need to get an LCR for gym shorts pocket carry though.

Actually, the .38 LCR is 4oz lighter. The main appeal of a small revolver is they’re not as blocky, so they don’r snag on pockets as much, making fast draws easier. I have a few handguns seeded around the place (no kids yet), but “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” so... For gym shorts, small, light, and no-snag are my main priorities. I just need to be able to fight my way to a better option when I don’t feel like wearing actual shorts with a belt and holster around the place.
Edit: My EDC is a G48 or a G19 depending on where I’m going. I’d like to try a P365 at some point, but the revolver comes first.

I carried around the .357 Magnum version of the LCR along with spare ammo.
If you are concerned about snagging, get the P365 SAS or if you already have a P365 get the SAS slide kit for it.
The P365 in a pocket holster is hard to beat for loose shorts type wear.
There’s still almost half a pound difference between the two once you factor in ammo. The P365 isn’t much lighter than a G43, which I also used to have. Both are fine pistols, but that slide eats up a lot if weight. I get where you’re coming from, more is better when it comes to ammo. But do I really want to carry 23oz around in a pocket when 17oz would be plenty for my to fight my way to a desk drawer? That’s the question. And smooth as the SAS is, it’s still not as smooth as a hammerless revolver.
I’ll have to hit up my buddy with a P365 and see if he’ll let me borrow it for a day or so and see what I think.

The idea of firearms scattered around the house is a good one, but really the best idea is just to keep your EDC on until bedtime. Honestly, it's easy and you'll have it if you need it. Across the room really could be to far away. Think about this hard. In these times, it could make a difference. I've done this for years. When the children were small, that was the safest place for a loaded firearm. I learned to just leave a covering garment handy for the occasional neighbor or Jehovah's Witness. If you really need your gun, even a few steps might be too far away.
Ever since my wife and I got our FFL, we work from our home, we carry all the time and both of us have our ccw next to us when in bed. This stuff is scary that it can happen at anytime. As people become desperate, this stuff will happen more and more.

The Sig p938 is small enough to fit my wife's hand and super easy to conceal. I use to carry my Sig p229 Legion, but it's actually really nice to be able conceal without a bulky holster when I'm just wearing athletic shorts.

I've notice a few "new" junk scavengers around here. The other night a beat up old Volvo wagon was going through my across the street neighbors boxes, then turned the car off and looked in trash. At one point I was about to call the police and was making sure they were not going to break into the lady's house. It would be ballsy for them to because a cop lives 3 doors down, but not sure his car was there. We have our usual junk collectors who come before trash day; but these were new people and VERY late at night.

I always have my Kahr PM9 on me whenever I’m dressed, but for the past few weeks I’ve been keeping my 8” 300 blackout SBR with the Saker mounted with me throughout the day. I also updated my nightstand gun from a Glock 23 to a suppressed Glock 45 9mm filled with 147 gr Winchester Ranger SXT. If someone does dumb shit I don’t want to blow my ears out.

LCP is 9.6 oz. Sig P365 is almost 18 oz. LCP is 5" x 3.5" and 0.8" wide with 7 shot capacity. Sig is 6" x 4" and an inch wide. It does carry 11 rounds of 9mm vs 7 .380. But for that size and weight I've opted to carry an LCP, and I have carried it under all conditions for the last five years or so. So utterly compact and light I don't notice it even i gym shorts. I'm not a big guy at 5'8" and 160 lbs. A bigger man will likely have less issues with a larger concealed pistol in shorts. And 9mm sure is nicer than .380. I just found that in my summer uniform of t shirt and shorts, I would always carry my LCP.
I don't open the door for anyone that I didn't invite to my house. There's a very, very short list of people I exempt from that.
Maybe he want to clear the dust out of his barrel before it started to rust and pit , running hot copper through the barrel cleans it up nice.
