Crazy drop with 6.5 Creedmoor at 200 yards?!

Hey guys, I recently purchased a Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 cm. I have a Vortex 6-24 power scope on it. Shooting Hornady Black, Hornady Match, and Hornady Superpeformance ammo. Now here’s where things get weird..

I zeroed the rifle at 100yrds no problem. Shooting super flat and dead on at 100yrds. Soon as I move to 200yrds I’m seeing a 8-9” bullet drop! I mean wow. My first thought was something is not correctly installed on the rifle.

Took it back to 100yrds and it’s still dead on. Back to 200yrds. Same level of drop.

Weather was pretty good that day. (I have the details if needed). But still 8-9in drop at 200yrds with a 6:5cm? Every ballistic calculator I’ve tried all say I should have much less drop at 200yrds.

Anyone experience anything similar or have any thoughts of what might be going on??

I want to move out to 600yrds+ but I won’t until I get this resolved. I don’t even think my 308 dropped that much at 200.

Or, shoot a group at 100 yards. Move out to 200 and shoot another group without adjusting the elevation on the scope. I'm thinking the 200 yard group should be low by an inch and a quarter to an inch and a half at most. If correct, then you have something goofy going on as Snuby is alluding to.

If you have a straight profile barrel and level it, you may be able to put a long
Level on turret and see the way they are pointed.
If they run together good if apart it's backwards.

But using your scope units helps not only weed out potential issues, but saves us all a math step too. There is already one wrong answer with a linear measurement.

Yea you're right I suppose. Also It is high. SMH. At the end of the day I'm thinking I got the incorrect mounts for this setup.i know these cantilever mounts are more for AR style rifles. Will post links to my setup when I get home. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something goofy like a few of you suggested. I don't mind being humbled by being called out for something goofy so long as the lesson is learned from it.

You then moved to 200 and indexed exactly the same center of both subtensions and it was over 4 minutes low with a velocity of almost 3k fps. This was repeatable both ways. If one of theses variables is not true then you need to drill down

If that’s all correct, it must be the range.

Edited to add; it can NOT be backwards rings or rails - theses only effect where your zero ends up in relation to the scopes internal travel.

I have a buddies RPR in the safe with AR extra high rings — I’ll measure - give me 2 min.

Ps I also use AR hieght on my AX and it is 2.4”

I haven’t myself. But I would be surprised if no one has caught that. Range has been there like 100 yrs. it’s old but I think it’s ranged properly. But again, I have not confirmed this personally as I don’t have a rangefinder just yet.

Everyone, gets task loaded when they are doing new stuff. You would not believe the mistakes I’ve made at matches, using the wrong stage card, shooting the wrong target, being on the wrong turret rev. The list is long.

Off the top of my head, your ammo speed and scope numbers are suspect (but that’s not the issue).

Your 4 minutes of drop sounds very similar to a 300y target. I would triple check the range before I started getting to far down the rabbit hole.

Don’t worry about it, that was my point. Just double check your measurements.

As long as stuff isn’t moving around or your erector binding (over tight scope caps) you should be fine. It stuff was repeatable as you sugggested then you should be good.

to be clear, at 200 you put the center of the crosshairs on the center of your target, right? you didn't hold over a line or two or three, right? not sure if your scope is 1st or 2nd focal plane, but if it's 2nd you can (will) have issues holding over and ranging if it's not at the designated magnification.

First, where's a picture of the OP's setup? I don't see one.

Second, the rail installed backwards (front taller than rear) is not responsible for the problem he's seeing. It cannot be.

As for actual 200 yd distance - does you scope have an MOA or Mil reticle? If so we can use it to measure distance.

Yes sir. Diver has been extremely helpful thus far. To answer your question, I’m firing from a bench at both distances however the bench at 200 physically feels different as far as bench height from the ground. (Not sure if that matters). Don’t laugh but I’m using a Vortex Crossfire 6-24x54 (MOA reticle) scope until I can buy an ideal companion for the RPR. Even so, didn’t expect issues at 200..

I appreciate all of the help and time you guys have provided. Gave me a slew of things to look into to correct this issue.

Maybe I should see if the issue is present at a different range also

You measure your groups (I've seen pictures) with a caliper or ruler or quarter then apply your math skills to describe your 3 shot group as less than 1/2 MOA. "Got a 1/2 MOA group at 600 yards and had to come up 2mils from my 100yd zero" with a inch caliper in the picture.


For us less skilled people that shoot from a crosshair, then walk down and measure targets in inches, stating 8 inches low @ 200 yards makes perfect sense to me.

I was under the impression from his first post he did not hold at all, or dial anything, rather just had his scope setup to a correct zero for 100 yards and then went to 200 yards without doing any holds or scope adjustments, simply putting the crosshairs on the same spot on the target at 200 yards & seeing where the bullet went.

If I read it incorrectly and he was making adjustments or holds then yes it would definitely be better to start out using whatever measurement for angular correction that his scope offered & just reference in those numbers.

Okay, please clear up a few things first so that we are all on the same page and not guessing and then arguing about our guesses.

First, verify exactly what model scope you have, as the Vortex Crossfire that I see on Vortex site is a 6-24 x 50 SFP MOA scope. This all matters.

Second, please clear up how you measured your drop at 200. Did you physically measure the drop with s tape measure/ruler or did you measure it with your reticle? This is important to anyone helping you figure this out.

Two questions at a time. Small steps.

seansmd asked you about magnification because changing magnification on a scope can cause POI issues, especially with cheaper scopes.

Did you adjust your parallax for each distance, not having correct parallax can also effect POI. More so if you do not have a consistent cheek weld.

Is the 100 yard range significantly up or down hill? I don't have a great way of explaining the reason for this question. Basically if you make a triangle, with the line from you to the target being the hypotenuse, the real zero would be cosine of the angle to the target. So if the target was 45 degrees uphill then you would actually have a ~70 yard zero.

Excessive cant (tilting the rifle) can also cause lower impacts.

Cheek pressure and recoil management can also cause POI changes. Make sure you are being consistent with how you shoot the rifle.

Parallax on that scope going from 100 to 200 will NOT creat the difference between 1MOA to over 4MOA.

He would have a hard time finding a range that has anything drastic enough angle wise to make the difference.

A canted rifle will show a primarily as windage. He would literally have to be laying on his side and he’d be talking about the huge windage issue.

He listed 3 ammo types. I would not be at all surprised if he has an unknown offset with one of them. Other bits of information such as the ammo speed and SOB do not seem correct. So I imagine some other more realistic detail like the offset has slipped thru the cracks.

Honestly don’t remember. It was my 1st day out with and didn’t document how much adjustment I needed to get zeroed at 100.

Not if he still used the center of the cross hairs as he did @ 100. Only the scale between the subtensions are effected. However, it’s important to note that most people indeed use the subtentions so it would then matter.

I'm a bit puzzled why anyone is talking about the scope or turret adjustments. The scope has no effect on ballistics. The bullet is going to do what the bullet is going to do without regard to the optic on the rifle... or which kind of hat you're wearing for that matter, eh?

When the OP says the bullet is dropping 8 - 9" at 200 over his 100 yard zero, I'm taking his post literally. I'm assuming that he means exactly that.... the bullet's trajectory is causing the bullet to impact 8 - 9" lower on the TARGET than it did at 100 yards. (Also assuming a good center hold on the bullseye.) This is independent of what is stuck onto the rail. By his description, it assumes no adjustment to the POA was made, nor were there any adjustments to the scope. Just a pure drop of 8 - 9". Yeah... that's not right. Should be about a 3" drop.

I haven't seen that addressed. Did the OP make adjustments to the scope and THEN had a POI 8 - 9" lower? If that's the case, then the original statement is not accurate. So... did he make an adjustment and THEN take the shot? If that's the case, it could be as simple as turning the turret the wrong way. 'Cuz none of us has ever done that! ;-) Or, it could be all kinds of things.

Of course, we need to know if it's the same ammo. Obviously, different cartridges will have different velocities and POI. That's what the "offset" is for in our ballistic calculators.

However, if no adjustments were made.... and he just moved from 100 to 200 yards... and the POI moved down 9 inches.... with the same ammo.... something's funky. For the various 6.5CM cartridges I use in my RPR, the drop from 100 to 200 yards is about 3 inches.

As has been suggested, maybe the distance isn't right. If I play with my Strelok calculator, a 9-inch drop would be at 275 yards.

Am I reading the OP correctly? Or did I miss something?

I think this thread actually shows how many of us are lacking base knowledge.

I am saying this not to be an ass, but hopefully a few guys will drill down to understand the numbers better as well as what true differences angles make. How severe they need to be and how hard it might be to shoot some of the scenarios presented, that some of the examples are actually backwards.

The issue here is that the rounds that were 4+ moa low at 200, or 3+ more than they should be as as the speed and zero presented.

I use one example posted. Please note I am not trying to pick on anyone just trying to help get people to question some of what they think is correct.

As an example: “So if the target was 45 degrees uphill then you would actually have a ~70 yard zero.”

First it is important to know that a cosign of 30 or 45 degree shooting angle is very difficult to find, much less shooting it at at square range. It also exceeds almost all natural dead fall of soil. So without a cliff, tall building and standing, a 100 yard target at 45 is just damn hard to find..

But let’s just say you zeroing and your target is at the top of the redwood tree that you are almost standing under. Sorry for the visual, but it is important.

Ok we do the math and end up with what is effectively 70 yard gravity distance.. all good.

We know that at about 2900fps with a 100 zero and 2.5 SOB, the drop will be approximately 1 moa on a flat range @ 200 and that the OP found that he was 4+ low not 1.

The closer we set our zero distance under 100, the less the predicted drop would be. This is because we are dealing with an increased angle that we created between the Bore and the scope by bringing the zero close. So a 70 yard gravity zero would have an expected drop .4 MOA LESS than the 100 yard zero at 200 or a predicted 200 yard comeup of .6MOA.

Same goes for SOB the taller the delta the less adjusted drop at 200. A 3.5” as the op stated vrs a normal AR height of 2.5” would result in a .5 moa 200 yard prediction.

Anyway, understanding our angles are important, especially if we are attempting to giving others information. I hope this is seen as helpful not a anything else.

Okay, since we’re explaining our questions now, here’s why I asked the simple questions that I asked. First off, HOW the OP measured the drop is important and from what I’ve read has not been answered yet. Since his scope is SFP and assuming that the reticle is in plane at 24 power (I confess that I’m on my phone and have not verified this), then if he measured the distance using the reticle (4 MOA, remember?) at a place in the power ring where the distance was amplified, then his measurement could well have looked like 4 MOA (8-9”) while actually being only 1+ MOA (2-1/2 to 3”).

Thus why I asked how he had measured the drop. If the drop was measured using a ruler of some sort, then it eliminates that possibility.

Weather or not the closer zero helps or hurts depends on SOB height. .

1. Please rethink this. Closer zeros always causes a more acute angle zero.

The military was pushing the 25 and 50 precisely because where the second zero crosses. Us, match type shooters use 100 because the drop is always hold overs.

2. As a separate issue SOB. High SOB does creates a similar effect. so a 3.5” SOB he mentioned would result in 1/2 the comeups and making your zero example exempt worse.

F’d Parllax that’s 3moa jacked would never produce repeatable groups especially with someone who has no idea of how to use scope shadow.

Using crazy tollerance stacking is not a reasonable approach or fix your examples.

“If” his groups were good, repeatable, same hold and if the mention velocity was in that normal 6.5 velocities that he mentioned, the answers seem to point to simple shit like an offset between ammo or the range was wrong. My guess would be on the first one.

But that’s no longer my point. If we are going to answer we should try to be correct. When we arn’t we should at least own up to it so “we” can become more knowledge shooters.

Creating arguments to try to make our points correct doesn’t really help us grow.

Anyway, I didn’t want to turn this into some kind of circus, but to offer insight. Take it or leave it, it was not meant to be argumentative.

The question was asked in question 10 about being centered up in the Strata (same as 100). If he answered the questions correctly then we can move forward. If not, well, who knows.

Both first and second focal plane do not change zeros on their centered strata regardless magnification..

You gave unrealistic senerios like shooting 45 degrees - gave examples that would produce the wrong direction and now I am the ass for not buying parallax is causing over 3moa between 100 and 200 while still shooting consistently. By the way, a lot of us shooting matches under time pressure like PRS, don’t touch our parallax. Is it the best? Not at all, but it doesn’t cause the kind of 3+ minute or 1mil problem that the op has and also doesn’t makes us miss.

In an RPR with his stated 3.5” SOB, he is already unrealistic on the tall end. 2” is unrealistically low on an RPR with a 56. That giant delta is not going to create more that about 1/3 minute or .1 mil at 200 per 1/2” of bore height change. Again, if you knew what you were saying you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying, nor arguing.

Check for any deformations in your barrel. Warping, buldging, or any other deformations. I’ve seen it before, and it may be slight but it’s still noticeable. Pull the hanguard off closely inspect the barrel. Could be a defect from the factory.

Just wanted to restate a couple things we need the OP to verify still:

1. How was the 8-9 inches of drop measured? Tape measure/ruler/etc? Were you using a target with grid lines on it that you were going off of to get the 8-9" measurement? Or something else?

2. If you don't have a friend you can borrow a rangefinder from, you can pace off the distance between the firing line and the 100 yard target, and then pace off the distance between the 100 yard and the 200 yard target. If it's roughly the same to the 200 yard target as it was to the 100 yard target, we can rule that out. But if that 200 yard target is actually 300 yards, that should clearly show up in counting paces assuming you do it with any sort of consistency lol.

3. You gave a muzzle velocity (a high one at that lol), how did you come up with that velocity number? If it was with a Magnetospeed, at what point in the range session was the MS used?

Edit: Just had a thought. We don't even need you to go back to the range to verify that it was a 200 yard target, assuming it's an outdoor range and there's a decent satellite view of it. You can measure the distance in Google Earth. I just measured a couple known local ranges with it, and it's within a few yards. I can measure it for you if you'd like, I would just need to know where the range is.

Both first and second focal plane do not change zeros on their centered strata regardless magnification..
