i had a half baked idea of using a fn bolt gun , being that they are using the pre 64 Winchester actions, to convert into a host action for a Carlos Hathcock replica USMC model 70. I dnt have the technical and gunsmith know how to determine if this is possible or even worthwhile. Hopefully someone out there can advise if this is the way to go, or maybe there's a better way? Thanks.

You can probably pick up a pre 64 action and bolt off Gun Broker that some moron has taken apart and selling in pieces. I have gotten a couple off there.

Pre is a control round feed and will have a claw extractor much like a Mauser.

Yes,action length etc. is different. The pre-64 model 70 was a long action as well. Subject to check, the various action lengths are: pre-64 7.450", post 64 7.575", and the short action that FN uses is 7.035".

Re: creating vietnam model 70

The mod 70's used by Marines were usually mod 70 targets and the receivers were clip slotted, most were under sn# 48000 or there about. Most were in sporter stocks but not all, barrels were replaced with a douglas XX when the winchester barrels were shot out. TBA guys
