Crossfit

Anyone try it? I hear there is a good amount of Olympic style lifts involved and workouts are changed very often.

I haven't tried it, but I know several guys who do cross fit.

They are all in great shape. It must work well. Cross fit guys can do things that are pretty crazy like 40 free hang pullups.

The box jumping is a terrible idea IMO < I once shinned myself in a similar fashion on a HMMWV roof and the roof cleaved a chunk of flesh off the front of my shin down to the bone. It was a 1 month recovery to walk without a limp and a 3 month recovery to get back in running shape.

The box jump is just a bad accident waiting to happen at gyms where the boxes are made of plywood with steel edges and stuff. <A lot of cross fit gyms are really spartan when it comes to equipment- old used equipment in a rented basement or something like that.

Crossfit is awesome! I have done it off and on for a couple years. I am just getting back into it again and it hurts at first but you can make very large gains in short amounts of time. Also the box jumps are fine, so long as you don't try to use a box higher than your ready for. Give it a try but be prepared to be soar starting out.

I've done CrossFit for a year and a half. It is a great concept, but not all CrossFit gyms are the same. I prefer the strength biased ones over the ones that only do strength once or twice a week. I also don't like to do a lot of stupid shit, such as 100 pullups for time, or anything with 50+ reps.

I have been doing Crossfit for over two years! Started at 254 and am down to 174. Best shape of my life. Remember that diet is 60% of the equation. But as for the Crossfit! Its a butt kicking I look forward to every morning! Not only that but the cuties at my local box are always a motivation!

I've been Crossfitting for about 3 months now. My agility, stamina, and strength are all greatly improved. I've been doing 4 - 5 WODs/week and am plenty sore. It's a good thing.

I'm fortunate to have an excellent Crossfit affiliate nearby. Find an affiliate you like, focus on proper form, get started, and hang in there. You'll soon see the benefits and look better naked too. Good luck!

im saying crossfit is nothing but a tool....if you use it for a entire workout you will get a fat burning effect...and really nothing else..

its just another passing fitness gimmick...does it help people get in shape? of course, there getting off their ass's and doing something..

i consider crossfit to be a neural recharge day, and a warmup at best

CrossFit has evolved and there are different versions of it, depending on your goals, such as strength biased CrossFit programs to endurance biased CrossFit programs. You can get in great shape and get real strong with CrossFit. The one thing that CrossFit isn't best for is bodybuilding.

like i said...crossfit is good for fat burning, and keeping the CNS charged....if it wasnt a gimmick it wouldnt be hunting down house wives, and tapout warriors for $300 a month..

that type of training has been around for a very long time....but Greg Glassman needed money so he gave it his own catchy name(crossfit) and started putting cock in ass on peoples bank accounts..

BUT AGAIN dont get me wrong...so called "crossfit" movements are always needed....just not in the current joke of display thats going on today

I agree the prices are ridiculous. That's why I do it at home or at work and I'll never pay that kind of money to join. Other than that, I disagree with your points. You can get strong as hell and build great endurance using CrossFit. You just have to pick the right programming. And I'm not the worlds biggest fan. I think some of the workouts can be retarded, like anything that has 100 or anything for time.

I hear people talking shit about crossfit all the time, over here and at home. Bottom line: 90% of the time, they can't keep up, and that results in them thinking its "not for them". No one wants to be little girl strong. Lift heavy things, eat good food, do high out put/ high intensity long work outs, and repeat. Call it crossfit, sealfit, military athlete, what ever you want, but the results show.

Military folks don't need to be body builders, we need to be strong enough and in good enough shape to perform our jobs and sometimes at a moments notice put out a shit pile of effort for a long period of time. Crossfit and the others like it are very good programs for the functional athlete, or military types...that is just plain hard to deny.

if its a warm up? whats your fran time? and what do you do afterwords to get a "real work out"?

$300 per month is a ridiculous price for Crossfit. I started out with CF 4 yrs ago and I think it's a great General Preparation Program as stated in other posts and like Chris K stated above. I learned a ton about training modalities and basic form on lifts and exercises. If I recall, I think my monthly fee was $70/ month. I think CF is a great place to start but after about 4 months I decided to go into strength training from there. There's a whole universe of knowledge out there if you want to be strong. CF will get you prepared but you won't reach your full potential strength-wise by doing CF alone.

I think BM has a point on the marketing. Some of the folks that I have learned a ton from and respect a lot have basically left the CF community because of run-ins with Glassman and his biz practices and outright jack-assedness on some occasions.

All of the politics and opinions aside...CF is 1000% better than the standard big box gym with "cardio areas" and "lunk alerts". Treadmills are muscle wasters not builders.

Crossfit an other full body max interval workouts will burn the most calories that fastest and lean you down the quickest. My wife has had issues since a car accident with staying in shape. Max interval training was the only thing that leaned her down.

I for one subscribe to the fitness notion that "to each his own," even if it's a fitness notion that creates a vulnerability to injury:

Strength training is NOT just about body-building. The notion of activity specific training is spot on. www.tabataprotocol.com More specific, even is this: If I want to learn how to run/fall/jump, go to cover, stand off-hand in cover ready for extended times with my M4, then I do those things with my M4. If I want to do 300 meter intervals with my M4, duty belt (if I had one - I'm not LE or military), body armor, radio, etc., then I'd run 300 meters with that gear.

Strength training, properly executed, provides the musculo-skeletal-ligamental/tendon-joint surface integrity necessary to engage in the specificity of interval work and activity specific effort. By properly understood I mean x1 per week, 12' total exercise time, compound movements over no more than 8 exercises, each rep performed to total, complete muscular failure with perfect form and the final rep of each exercise ended with a 30" static hold, if you have anything left in the tank after the primary exercise.

Unless you're in your 20's or 30's, how lean one gets is a direct and primary function of nutritional protocol, unless of course you are doing CF x4/week x2 hrs/session, or, training for marathons with 60-70 miles per week (or you're a Kenyan

And that nutritional protocol is optimized if it's high in saturated fat, middling in protein and just enough carbs to sustain ones activity specific efforts, coupled with ABSOLUTELY NO WHEAT/GRAINS of any kind!!

The gains one gets from any fitness protocol are NOT derived from the exercises themselves, but rather in the recovery intervals that occur between bouts of the exercise. There is no more important area in which the old adage is true than in fitness training: You cannot get enough rest!! and so the trick is in figuring out how get the optimum balance between strength training, activity specific work - intervals, if you will, recovery time and the nutritional protocol that supports it all. Anybody can get injured. It takes no smarts to produce that. Not everybody is smart enough however to be "smart" about these critical variables.

Great post copdoc. I for one pick and choose which xfit exercises best fit my needs and equipment I have available to me. Having been involved since the beginning I've seen "xfit" evolve into what some consider trendy. Especially with the abundance of xfit gyms opening up everywhere competing to draw members.

Bottom line, like copdoc said, choose a workout that fits your needs.

If you want something a little more difficult try Sealfit.com It is circuit based like CF but a little tougher.
