Hi Guys,
Tons of great info on the site. Im just getting into building a custom .204 ruger. Trying to find a Left hand remington 700 receiver and bolt in .223 bolt face. Do you guys have any ideas for finding one. Checked gunbroker for used guns, coming up short. Called around local also nothing. Also the few places that do sell new receivers cant seem to come up with .223 bolt face and left hand together. Can purchase a new sps 700 .223 Lh for 650, but was told the barrel and stock are a dime a doezen so cant get much for them. In college so budget is alittle tight. Any other ideas? Thanks

Re: Custom build from M700 action, few questions

Bunker.....good luck with that, I am a lefty and have been looking everywhere as well. In the mean time I have picked up a tikka and will upgrade it with some Aftermarket parts, etc...

If your dead set on a remmy prob gonna have to buy a new one unless you have patience.

Another route is to get a stiller action, good thing is here you won't have to pay a smith to true it up....then when more funds become available you could upgrade stock, etc...

Re: Custom build from M700 action, few questions

I'm a lefty and will never shoot anything but a right side bolt gun again. After teaching precision shooting for so long the grip and trigger are critical for long range shooting. I can do follow-up shots faster than others when taught this way as my head and firing hand never leave the weapon and use my right hand to cycle the bolt. I follow vapor trail, reload and spot my own corrections with this style of shooting.

It's also harder to find parts as well. If I remember right, the 788 was discontinued quite some time ago, unless they've been revived and I'm just unaware of it. Whether the 788 action is "better" than that of the 700 is an arguable point, but if I remember right, the 788 had problems of its own.

shoot one, you will see......... fast lock time on any firearm in the world that is mechanical...... rear locking lugs........ the problem was the will out perform a standard 700 and they were 25% less cost...... they are awesome rifles. I own every one ever made....

It's called a bootlace sling, duh.

OP, I think I heard that Remington is selling actions only again, may check there

That's a decent price for a trued action especially for the RH. The lefty's get facked as per usual. Don't know anything about them though but if work done well the a good deal.

I agree for long range shooting I prefer right handed bolts for this same reason. For a walk around rifle it gets a little more complicated if the right handed rifle is heavy.

Re: Custom build from M700 action, few questions

Never use a sling other than to carry. Too many years of shooting to rely on it. Our quals required shooting scoped at various targets from many positions and and distances. Tge qual times would never allow the time it took for sling use. Get pretty good after awhile doing precise shooting not proned out. I still use mine for hunting too. 15+ lbs and no sling. Its do-able.

Re: Custom build from M700 action, few questions

A field rifle without a proper shooting sling is a boat without a rudder.

There are many reasons for a shooting sling.

You can not always get a good prone bipod shot and a sling fills the nitch when you need support and natural support is just not there.

You just need to be shown where they work. Anyone who has taught so long that they dont see the need for further learning has reached a flat spot and need to shock themself to a new level. BTDT

Been shooting teaching for as long as I remember. Thought I was at end of how to use a sling when I went to USMC and say all the new ways they invented to use my slings. Everyone can learn something new no matter how much experience you have

Re: Custom build from M700 action, few questions

Ha ha I took my M-40 A-5 clone out on a hunting trip this last year and I don't like slings.. This was a walk in only big azz country hunt.. I passed on a couple of really nice dear while I was on that hunt. Because I knew that I would have to pack my rifle out before I could even go look at my deer..LOL.. To the OP have you given thought to a Savage Action? they come in left or right hand and trued out of the box. I know you cant say its a Remington but anymore if its not a Surgeon, Stiller, Big Horn, Badger or something like that its just not cool anymore.. The truth is they all shoot Bug Holes if they are well built..
