custom build

I want to do my first every custom build, on a budget. I do not want to spend a ton of money here. Looking around $600-800.

I do not want this set-up to be for extreme long range. What I do want is, to be able to shoot as accurate as possible out to say 3 or 400 yards. Looking for either a twenty or thirty cal. round.

What would be the best route to go? Action, Barrel, Caliber, etc. Or would I be wasting my time trying to do something like this for this amount of money?

Buy a used Savage and "custom" spray paint it. For $800 you may be able to get a "custom" barrel. Have you done any research at all?

You would be better off getting a SPS Tactical in 308 or 223 your choice and throwing a SWFA Super Sniper 3-9 FFP on it and shooting the piss out of it.

Do you have a rifle that you can begin to tailor to your needs now ?

One particular builder on this forum that comes to mind is Mark Gordon's Rem700 package. I believe it was off the 700 SPS-T.

If you don't have a rifle right now, I believe you might be out of luck to be honest. You're probably looking at $800 to stand up a stock off the shelf 700 in .308 or .223 (rifle + base + rings + scope).

what I have noticed is the actions are going to be the most expensive part. I understand that this is cant be done very cheap, but I also dont have a need for the little things, such as bolt nobs, muzzle breaks, etc.

Good accurate barrel, put onto a decent action. Painting/finish (not in my eyes custom nor needed)

I understand all of you think of custom as this extreme high dollar guns, shooting out to 1000+.. not what i want nor need.

I do have two rifles I could concider customizing from.

I have a remington 700 sps tactical in .308 already with nikon 4-16x40 on it.

Also, I have a savage 342 in 22 hornet, that I would not mind fixing up into a shooter. Problem is I can not seem to get to much information on this gun to see if it is possible or worth it.

Get an SPS Tactical in 308, best of both worlds.... round 550 for a good shooter.

200 for a Bell and Carlson stock or Used HS Precision.

750 for the gun, and then about 800 for base/scope/rings.

It will outshoot you for a long time.

Get a Remington 700

put a SS Scope on top of it.

best guess it will do everything and more.

by the sounds of it, I already have a gun that people will concider one of the best?? well I guess that will save me some time/money!!!

Any ideas on that savage 342 anyone??

Custom on this site means $3000 to $5000. If you want a good rifle that will do what you want it to. Get a Savage 10 Precision Carbine and put a $100 scope on it. Leapers makes some decent tactical knock offs that hold a zero pretty well and have all the same features. (i.e. locking turrets, mil dot etc) I'm sure people will jump up and say that you have to have a Rem. 700 with a nightforce but you don't. If you aren't a military or LEO Sniper you don't need to spend $2500 on scope. I just put a Leapers 4-15X40mm on my savage 10FP LE1 for less than $100 and it does just fine out to 600 yards.

great advice, and hell you can hang fuzzy dice from the bipod so you can tag the term "custom" to it. Not to be a dick but what does custom mean anyway, to most here it means a precision rifle built by proffesional builders, which you are not gonna get for 800 bucks. Now if your goal is to piece together your own rifle to shoot 3-400 yards, thats a different animal and the term "custom" should probably be left out.

I guess maybe you hit the nail on the head there. For I do not want to spend 3000+ on a firearm! But I do want to toy around and shall I say learn more. I have build ARs, added/modded 10/22s, I guess I just want to move forward a step or two?

As I said I have a .308 remington 700 sps tac. That is right now my best shooter! sub-moa at 500 yrds, still working on dialing in a reload.

I have a hand me down 22 hornet Savage 342, that I would not mind 'honing' in my skills. Maybe new stock, bedding, new barrel, etc.

Maybe I should have put it this way not 'custom' but 'bettering' a hand me down and saying that I have that savage to work from.

Sorry for bringing up 'custom' where 'custom' did not belong.

I would use your SPS tactical as a donor gun, see how far $800 will get you, for instance you could get an aftermarket stock or you could rebarrel it and true you action at the same time. Either way should help you get the most out of you rifle.

I would rather have one rifle that is set up well than several rifles that are pretty much stock.

Spend $200 on a stock for your sps and the other 600 on a good scope

Get some decent glass on the sps. The sps is already at least a 1 moa or less stick.

You keep pushing your want to upgrade things on your savage. If that's what you want to do then do it. It's not what I would do nor does it sound like the direction anyone else on here would go but be your own person. If you want to modify the Savage then go ahead and do it. Just be warned though, accomplishing what you want to accomplish can be very easily done with your 700. Add a new stock from Bell & Carlson, put a decent base and rings on it (save some money by buying EGW/Burris stuff ~100 compared to twice that for other rings/bases from NightForce or Leupold etc, etc...) Buy some reloading equipment for your caliber if you don't allready have it, and spend whatever is left on some good quality glass. I'm buying a SWFA Super Sniper 10x42 for 300 but you could probably have enough left over to get the next best model with the side focus. This setup will get you a good start and a solid foundation to learn off of and expand with as your skills develope.
