Just had my 6th cutaway! Finished an AFF jump with a student, tracked away, deployed and went for a nice ride! Yee Haw! Tossed me around pretty good as you can see.

Thats what we cant get newish jumpers to realize. People start off jumping large, docile canopiesfor a reason. Then they want to downsize too quickly to higher performance canopies. Bad things happen a LOT faster under a high performance canopy.

Wow that sure does happen fast. Does the reserve automatically deploy as the primary is being cut loose?

That's 6 in 2900 jumps, so not too bad odds. First cutaway was on jump #29, so I was still very new to the sport. It was a slow spiral. Overall, reaction was about the same: "oh crap!" and getting busy.

Tony: My rig lacks what is called a 'reserve static line', which would automatically pull the pin on the reserve. I removed it when i was doing a lot of camera jumps because it can cause additional issues if you snag your camera.

It beats the hell out of me why anyone in their right mind would voluntarily jump out of a perfectly good airplane for recreation.

Still, glad it went as well as such things can go and you got on the ground safe.

Pretty amazing! That was unlike the shit you see on TV with people trying to pump up a folded up sail for what seems like hours. You just dumped it and had your reserve up and flying in what, maybe 3 seconds! Impressive! Good job.

33,000 people died in 2010 from car accidents...yet I bet you own a car? At least jumping, you can reduce the risks by not acting like a moron. Driving...you still have to worry about other morons on the road haha

Plus it's just a blast! Everyone likes different things. Some people think our hobby is silly, taking a piece of metal 1/3 the size of a pinkie finger and slinging it over half a mile away in conditions that are never standard to hit a target who's size is measured in fractions of a degree. How could that be fun to anyone!? ...To each his own!

Isn't it amazing how fast you can say,"Motherfucker!" when shit gets wierd? I find it funny as hell. When I went down on my bike when that F-350 merged on top of me last year, as my faceshield hit the ground and ratted out, I was saying,"Motherfucker, I'm fucking toast!" AS I rolled out of the fall/skid/whatever it was and into a huge LEO who was grabbing for me so I wouldn't go into traffic, my mind was freakin BLANK and going What the fuck did I just HIT! After my thoughts collected and I got the story, I will Always, ALWAYS respect those huge ass motherfucking squared away Clarksville LEO's

Sweet ride! I've managed 2 rides in just over 5K jumps....both on the same day...Line over in the morning, got reapacked after spending 3 hrs. looking for my cutaway handle then 2 jumps later had an FXC (dating myself a bit there) misfire and put two out but I downplaned the main and chopped it as the reserve fully inflated to the rear. The first one pissed me off as i knew it was my rushed packjob the night before, the second i was cool as a cucumber until I landed next to my freebag, then the knees started shaking a bit and I decided it was time to drink... Got right back in the saddle at 7AM the next morning jumping a 2 seat ultralight from 5000 and just kept going from there!

Back in the olden days, you'd really be cutting something. In these modern times, you're pulling a single handle release that jettisons the main. You probably saw the handle with the yellow cables in my right hand.

There are two handles on the shoulder straps. The handles are located just below your armpits. The right handle has what is basically weed eater cord that runs up through the rings on the shoulder straps that attaches the main canopy. If you pull that handle the cord comes with it and actually releases you from the canopy. At that point the left handle is pulled which releases the reserve canopy. That handle is just like the first pull cord to release the main canopy, just in a safe spot.

Was a good canopy despite being all twisted up. Hard to kick out of a line twist when you are spinning in circles around yourself and falling fast. I've kicked out of one that was easy since the canopy stayed upright. But thats how most of them go.

I dont know if the shit that flew down both legs of my pants would have got earth bound before me or after but I would have done so just the same!
Never liked flying devices as they always took me to places where people didnt like me. But never thought about jumping out,Figured I would take my chances on the ground.

Great video. I've watched it a couple times, trying to better understand the perspective of what a malfunction must be like. I'm getting ready to return to AFF after I hit a tree last year on jump #5 and screwed up my ankle. I'm really pumped for the weather to start getting better here, but I haven't been doing as much review as I should have been this winter on EPs. I've only had one jump with a couple of line twists so far, and I no matter how much I practice, I always feel like the real thing will be far different. I still hope my reactions are good when the real mal happens. I still get more than a bit scared thinking about horseshoes and pc in tow.

Out of curiosity what size chute are you jumping? I was working my way down in sizes and was at 150 when I broke my hand and had to quit. Now I just need to get my money stash back together and get back into it.

We had to put a 110 lb girl on a bigger canopy one time because the rest of them were packed up and ready to be jumped bother people. I think it was a 170 and I swear it took her 10 minutes to get to the ground from a 5,000 foot hop and pop.

CJ, that was cool and all but could you do it again with a T10charlie and show us the "scoop and throw down and away" maneuver for the reserve ? The black hats assured us that it would work but color me unconvinced.

The smallest one ever jumped was the size of a bed sheet. Total was 39 square feet. I'm sure that was a very fast landing.

1.8! Do any swooping? That's another one I just don't think I'll ever get the stones for. I kind of like the idea of accuracy jumps a bit more, just in case the need ever arises to land in someone's backyard.
