So I am a SGT in the Army and I am being sent recruiting. After looking up the regs I am not allowed to carry any weapons with an exception to a knife under 4". Does anyone have a recommendation on a defensive knife that I can conceal in uniform with the blade being under 4"?

Just about any Auto or Assist will work and as you are Military I believe you are exempt from CCW laws and what not. Pro Tech, Benchmade, Kershaw, Spyderco, Chris Reeves....There are a bunch of high quality Auto's and Assisted Open out there.

Gerber laredo. A little practice and the blade snaps right out. Big strong liner lock so it won't allow the blade to fold back on you....3.75" blade

Yep, another vote for Emerson. CQC-7 with the Wave which when drawn from the pocket properly it deploys faster than any automatic or assisted opening knife out there. It tucks nicely in the sock too when canvassing the streets in dress uniform, but at least you should get to wear utilities most of the time.

Good luck on recruiting duty, and hopefully times are better now than the early war years when I was on it with the Corps. In comparison I've spent six enjoyable years contracting in Afghanistan since I left the streets in '06!

Thanks for the help! It seems that everyone is in consensus with a folder knife. I'm not sure why but I was thinking more along the lines of a fixed blade. Is there certain perks that come with the folder?

I would suggest fixed blade as well, but the main issue would be concealment. A folder will get you a longer blade in comparison.

Also, if you want to conceal a fixed blade, you might not be able to do so in your pockets (unless you go down in blade lenght). If you need to conceal it in other places, the advantage of faster deployment you have with a fixed blade is gone.

Come to think of it, you could carry both! Emerson wave folder in your pocket, fixed blade mounted horizontaly on your belt.

We do have a lot of rules and regulations, I am trying to find options for defense. I am a CCW card holder, my choice is my Kimber CDPII Ultra LG. But that is far outside the standards. The only weapon I am allowed to have is a defensive pen and a knife with a blade under 4".

.....most, but.not all Striders are frame locks.....the RCC, for instance, and some ARs and GBs.......not to mention the AKAK are liner locks......

Being an active duty military member does not exempt one from CCW rules. Now,if you need to carry a knife between the office and car, just about any knife will do. In the office, get a plaque with a K- Bar on it and if SHTF, grab the K-Bar off the wall and go at it.

I know on the Marine Corps side handguns were strictly off limits at all of those locations, CCW permit or not. I also know a few that chose not to follow that at times (myself included) when the situation warranted differently, but on a continuous basis you suck it up and try to figure out how to not get fired for one more day. It's a tough pill for a combat vet grunt to swallow...

I do not think there are any restrictions for double edge knives... however I am going to Missouri area and have not looked up their laws yet. There are absolutely no weapons allowed in the office nor the gov vehicle, by the regulation any knife under 4" is not constituted as a weapon. I do realize I will not be able to carry it on school grounds but as soon as I get back to the gov I can re-equip it. I want a good fighting/defensive fixed blade just in case things get crazy and SHTF. The problem with the plaque is even having it in the office is illegal.

A little 3 Sided blade like this is very easy to conceal, is very easy to draw, stays in your hand well & will rather quickly change somebody's outlook on life.

Take a look at the Spyderco P'Kal. Great folder and due to the 3 inch blade its legal places even small fixed blades aren't.

What do you think about the neck knife below? Blade measures just under 3", which should fit your regs. Made from CM154 stainless steel. Kydex sheath can be worn around the neck or you can deploy it at your belt (though you'll have to come up with a way for it to "wear" there).

So far what I have gathered from all the suggestions is, I want a fixed blade in the style that W54/XM-388 showed a few posts back. I am thinking that I want to conceal it in my waistband as well.

That one is actually a fixed blade
You can get it from these guys: Dawson Knives It is a new design & is not on their website, but if you e-mail them or call them, it's called the Razorback (or #45 on their baby sale flyer). They are handmade knives so expect a couple month lead time & you can pick a different handle materials, blade finishes, length etc.

They will do the sheaths in either kydex (black), or leather.
The design of this one actually lends itself very nicely to either horizontal belt or concealed front pants pocket carry, the loop on the back lets you flip it right out of your pocket if you put it in a looser holster and carry it in a deep pocket in dress pants for example.

Who's coming around checking what kind if knife you are carrying? Just pick a knife that you could easily deploy in a sticky situation. You have more to worry about when being assaulted than 'oh shit I am gonna be so busted, my knife isn't allowed"...

Well if that was the case I would just throw my .45 on my hip. The point is I want to stay within the regs. Honesty, loyalty, and integrity are pretty big in my book. Doing the right thing when nobody is looking is hard to come by these days and its a shame.

You will make a good recruiter, thats how I got hooked then I realized it's all a bunch of bullshit. Most people who preach that are scumbags and you know it (not saying I don't follow the Army Values). Anyway I digress, the differences is between a knife and a .45, as I am sure you know they are not minute by any means. Anyways I had a DS who said "I am not saying you can do this, but..." So like I said get a knife that suites your needs, I am not saying get an auto, or a machete, just get what you need. There are rules that are in place for no good reason, and there are rules to keep one safe. Differentiate between the two and I am sure you will be fine. But no matter what knife you pick just make sure not to loose your totenchip card :)

I am a SSG, in uniform I carry a Strider EB-AC IWB. It disappears with my ACU top on. I have carried it and a ZT0350 everyday for the last few years. This combo has worked well for me and has been very comfortable to carry on a Ares Gear Ranger belt.

I walk in and out of secured buildings all the time at work (I'm a gov't employee), and carry either a Benchmade Vex or Cold Steel Recon 1 (I usually carry the Recon 1). Been doing this for years and have never had anyone question me, and the Recon 1 is a fairly large knife.

I know everyone is pimping the coolest, most expensive, awesomest knife they have ever seen, but head down the the PX, pick up a CRKT M16 SF series. It has the little nubs/guards on both sides of the blade that will catch on your pocket as you draw it out of your pants and automatically open the blade. I LOVED mine before some punk ass stole it out of my room in Mazar e Sharif....
Simple, cheap (there are more expensive versions too), easy to find, and still a very good knife.
