Del Norte and Zia Monthly Matches, New Mexico

Quote "so you may see this match again some time down the road"
Good idea Reid! Let's shoot the same COF again in the spring when the winds are up!
I'll bring the crying towels for everyone.

LOL, yah, this particular match would be a lot harder if the wind was up, maybe we'll run it agin in the spring : ) Though, for as little wind as there was, I sure got caught in a wind shift it the first couple of stages. That's ok, I don't mind being wind bitch for everyone.

ZiaHunter,
Thanks for coming up for the match all the way from Las Cruces! Glad you could make it. I regret that I didn't get much time to talk with you durring the match, and also, to help you out. It get's kind of busy running the match, but next time, feel free to bug me about whatever you have questions about. I don't mind, we really do want to help new shooters any way we can. Hope to see you at the next one, Del Norte, or Zia. Glad you had a good time.

FNG here... This was an awesome match! This was the first one for me, and I had a great time. I really appreciate everyone's help.
I will definitely be back for more. Great day, great match, great food, and great guys, what more could you ask for? If anyone has been thinking of going out and giving this try, I highly recommend it. Super friendly group, eager to help new guys.

Reid:

Great match and very much enjoyed it. No worries about not having much time to visit. Hunting season just around the corner and will try to make as many matches as possible this fall. Good group of folks and all the tips are much appreciated. Hope to see all of you next month.

Looks like everyone liked the match. Glad to hear it, I will take note of this match for future records. Thanks again! I'm going to step aside next month, and let Curtis design next month's match. He is my right-hand-man in running these things, and I couldn't do these without his help! He has a lot of experience at these type of matches. I'm sure he will have something really good for us next month also!
Thanks,
Reid

Zia matches are the third Sunday of every month.....9/21.

Come out and bring a friend!

The winner of this match gets Ron's pack or a free lunch, maybe both!!!

The next match is September 21 at Zia. Curtis will be running it this time. Be aware, it sounds like he has some tricks up his sleave. Seriously, it will be cool to have someone else's match design... change it up a little, and see what he has for us. Looking forward to it Curtis!

For Zia, sign in is 730, Match's at 8am. Coordinate with someone to let you in or if there's traffic at the front gate ask to be escorted to the East Range (close to the shotgun range) for the Precision Rifle Match. Reid is your contact there. The Zia Calendar PDF has his phone number on it.

No idea about Del Norte.

Biggin69, mcfred is correct. Sign in is at 7:30, and we start shooting at 8:00. if you show up at 7:00 to 7:30, at the front gate you will most likely be able to catch somebody coming in. If not, as mcfred said, just get my cell number off of the Zia Gun Club web site, and I'll come let you in.

Update: Curtis has indicated, that he may, or may not be able to make it to this shoot. I hope all goes well, and he can make it, but if not, I have a backup plan / match design of my own, just in case. As always, bring about 60 rounds for the match, (more, if you want to stick around and shoot afterwards), and have your dope for 100-800+ yards, and be ready for whatever we throw at you. If Curtis is able to make it, we will shoot his COF, and if not, we will shoot mine. If he does make it, then I will save my COF for next month, either way, we are covered. Hope everybody can make it. It should be a fun shoot either way. And we will plan to BBQ again this month after the match!
Thanks,
Reid

We forgot to bbq, but aside from that, I think a good time was had by all. Curtis came through with a very challenging match that had a lot of variety between stages, and a few things we haven't done in a while. We had a good spectrum of shooters from seasoned veterans, to a couple of new guys. One of which was his first ever precision rifle match, and he took 2nd with my spare rifle! Great shooting Jarod! Any way great job on the match design Curtis. Here are the scores:

52 Reid
44 Jarod (FNG)
43 Tate
42.5 Ron
38 Justin
31 Neal
26.5 Toby / Curtis
24.5 Brandon
20 Randy

Thanks Ron. I think the wind was defenately a factor in bringing down the scores, and it would still have been pretty tough had we not had the wind. total points possible were 91. Average score was 34.8. The average hit ratio was 38%. usually, it is more like 50%-60%, so yah, I think it was tough, and the wind brought down the scores. Great match though, I agree. I liked how we did a few things we haven't done in a while, like reticle ranging, and the loophole shoot! Curtis really did a fine job on that reticle ranging stage, by cleverly finding a location to do it on a range that has a lot of berms we all know the range to. By setting it in the one area that is flat for a good distance where we don't normaly shoot, and by shooting it from a good distance back from the normal firing line, he succeded in giving us an UKD stage that even the experienced Zia guys couldn't guess at the range. I thought that in particular was very well done.

On a side note, I found it interesting how the only two shooters to clean the retical ranging stage were also the only two guys running IPHY reticles, namely me and Jarod :)
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Good match Curtis.

movers, anyone? seriously, I've only ever shot them once at the SH Cup 2014, and I think we should try them out. I have an idea for doing regular movers at like 3-4 mph, at 600 yards, and also, another idea for doing them closer, say 300 yards or so, at a faster speed. Either way, I am planning to work this into the next match, even though I know it takes longer to do movers, I really want to do this, as it is something that we don't practice often enough.
Reid

Thanks, Reid. I'll PM cwinner.

As for movers, sure. It's been a long time for me too. Those brown cardboard IPSC cutouts on sticks blend into the 600yd berm so well too. Can't hardly see them.

well then, we should shoot at the white side of the cardboard targets at 600. Does anyone have walkie talkies that we could use for comunication behind the berms with the movers? We'll get that sorted out before we try it.

I want to do movers, but I am so busy at work, I haven't had time to put anything together. We may just end up using the F-class berm and walking with paper targets behind the berm, as Sean points out, this method for movers is reliable, and has other options; as in, we can do a stage where we can have targets pop up for short time frames. Again, does anyone have walkie talkies / radios, that we could use to comunicate with the guys behind the berm? Without that, I don't see how we can make it work. In the mean time, we are working at getting funds for real movers, stand by. This month, may, or may not have movers. Sorry, I have gotten really busy lately, but whatever we do, we will have a good/challenging match.
Reid

TexasMade, yes there is a web site. Search Zia Rifle and Pistol Club, Albuquerque, and you will find it.

Ok, I'm going to do something unpresidented for Zia, I'm actually going to tell you what stages I am thinking of doing before the match, though, not the details. Here goes:

1 cold bore on steel at fairly long range
2 Belly stage = everyone lays down prone, and we take turns shooting at relatively small steel targets from mid range out to long range for 2 points first round hit, 1 point second round hit.
3 1 second time window to shoot at 100 yards on paper, repeat 5 times, negitive points for misses.
4 KYL @ 550
5 movers
6 vanishing targets. you have 5 or so seconds to shoot them before they disapear.
7 Increasing value targets. Same targets as the KYL, but you get 1 shot at each for increasing value, and you get to keep all your points regardless of any misses.
8 Run and Gun. Shooting from various Improvised positions at any combinations of the following: barricade, rooftop, barrel, tire stack, car, etc.
9 Back and Forth, under a tight time frame. shoot close, then far out, then back close, then farther out, then back close again.
10 Position shooting. Positions: standing, nealing, sitting, unsupported prone.

round count: 49 to 51 rounds
total points possible: 100

It may make for a long match with the movers, and the belly stage, but I think this is a pretty good mix of everything that we can do. A couple people have said that they can bring radios for the movers stage. That would be greatly appreciated, if you guys can bring what you have! always good to have backup, in case some of them don't work. Thank you guys for that, and all who have volunteered to bring radios, please do so. Again, we strive to bring you the best matches that we can think up, and I really appreciate your all's feed back.
Your thoughts?
Reid

Reid, I checked my radios and with fresh batteries they are GTG. I'll bring them with on the 18th.
The stages look great except for the one second stage. I think the last time I finished something in one second I was 15 years old.

Thanks RJN, appreciate the help with the radios. I regret to inform however, that I may not be able to make this month's shoot. I am looking for someone to run it for me. I know, after all the talk, I may have to bail out... sorry, but I am trying to get someone to run this corse of fire if I cannont make it. Stand by.
Reid

I'll be there to run the Oct match.....won't be doing movers cause Reid's acting like a 15 yr old ! We're going to get a high quality mover set up for real before next year!!

Curtis will run the match, as I will be taking another shooter's place in the Compatition Dynamics Team match that weekend. It came up rather suddenly, as one competitor was forced to back out, and I was asked to take his place. Again, I appologize for leaving, but I don't want to let my new team mate down! The entry fee has already been paid, and we can't back out now. So, sorry, but I will have to back out on this one. I will be giving Curtis my COF, and he will modify it some to his liking I imagine. I'm sure he will have a really great match for you all. He does a great job.
