i realise there is fps formulas, ballistic gelletain and stuff, but im looking for a mechanical device of some sort that would measure the actual impact of a round down range.

maybe something that is on a plate or something that would proved a measurement. my project is not firearm related but the same principals apply.

thnks in advance

I would think you would want to use some type of a load cell. You need to have some idea, typically, as to the impact duration, anticipated G's as well as other parameters do see if you can identify an off the shelf unit that will work for your particular apllication..all this is as memory serves..

Strain or force gauges are avaiable for your desired application. Do a Google search and you will find numerous manufacturers. You'll have to rig your particular fixture to the gauge, however.

Use a ballistic pendulum (see Wikipedia) and attach a fabric ruler to the bottom of it. When it is struck and the pendulum moves, it will pull the ruler the distance that it moves and wont push it back when it swings back. Once you know how far the pendulum moved the amount of force required to move it can be calculated. (The fabric ruler is the kind that a tailor would use to measure you for a suit. I'm not sure exactly what they call it.)

I've used Natinal Scale for both custom, and off the shelf load cells before. You'd be surprised just how reasonably priced they can be.

This would be the easiest way. record the speed at the range you want to measure the force of and correlate it with the mass of the bullet.
