well a hot solderin iron and 4 beers later this is what I came up with. I used a first generation XD so if I fucker'd it all up I would be cryin in aforementioned beers. It feels good and it is at least 75% more "grippy". Whatya think?

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

I guess its not some guys thing. This is a back up gun I use for IDPA stuff so I may as well do it to it before I do it to the primary. Shot a couple matches in the rain and I tell ya factory plastic guns get perty hard to hold onto in the rain like XD's, Glocks, M&P's and so forth. This is just an option as opposed to skater tape or shoo goo on yer hands.

Why would it hurt your hands having that much grip?
Looks good! And being a competition shooter also I know how nice a good stipple job can help.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

I think you did a decent job. Can we get pics of the whole gun?

If you run SSP you might want to check the IDPA rules though. I'm pretty sure checkering is not a legal modification and will bump you up to ESP. If your like me and just using IDPA for training/ trigger time who gives a flip.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

I like it. I like that you did it yourself even more. Your job took WAY longer than mine did. Amazing amount of effort, and it looks great! Pretty fumey work, though - I was a bit jittery when I got through with my little project!

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

Op- nice work! I've been meaning to try, I paid over 300 for trigger work and stoking before, seems kind of silly now.

Chainring- looks good, sometimes less is more

High praise from a guy that knows a thing or two about the topic!

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

chainring, that looks great! you did a fine job

AQC440, I just used the pointed standard head that came with it, I just canted it and used the flatter portion of the head.

Thanks guys, I was a lil nervous but said what the hell and went, once started I just followed the line and kept goin. Last night I took some sand paper and rubbed it a little bit to smooth down some of the sharper "pits", visually you cant tell but it feels actually awsome now. Almost like a hand massage fom a korean hooker

What kind of tip did you use to achieve this looks?

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

Looks like it'll definitely do what you want it to. That look isn't for me, but the work you did looks great and it has to be tons easier to hold on to. Great job.

As a matter of fact, the pic of the iron is the one i quoted to ask the question! DOH!

I think im gonna try to round one of my iron tips and try this golfball look on an 870 stock. The golfball looks great. May try to make the tip ovular and try to do a snakeskin pattern even.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

Yeah, strangely enough the little soldering iron that I bought had that big round tip in the kit with it, but grinding down a more pointed one to give a round end would work just as well. The one I used is about 3/16 in diameter.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

looks like shit. haha just kidding. Good job, you kept it really pretty... takes awhile doesnt it?

Some may not like the look but you cant argue with the grip purchase when you are shooting the thing. I would never go back to a slick frame polymer. I remember at a shooting course down south last summer I was having a hard time keeping a good grip cuz my hands were sweating so much on fast paced range. From now on I run skate tape on my slide with a stippled frame.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

I like it, I did my XD SC sometime back useing the tutorial on arfcom, http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=19&t=261758&page=1. I made a bit out of a screw head (had 16 diamonds) that went into the soldering iron. I dug it in deep and twisted when I came off the pistol and ended up with this. Everyone that has actually shot the pistol loved it, I even had a offer or two to buy it.

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

Not my thing. I like the golfball look because its uniform. The other looks are too much for my taste. Thats not to say in any way that you didnt do a good job. The job is within the lines, and even throughout. Very nice work, just not my taste

Re: Did my first Stippling Job, remarks?

Heres a picture of mine I had professionally done. It looks much better, but than again I had to pay to do so. If you change the bit you will get better, more uniform results. I just haven't mustered up the courage to do it to any of my other weapons as of yet.

Oh and its not an XD:p

It looks ok, not to be a ass but my tree bark pattern looks better on the M&Ps

I was not going to post any because I have already posted it here on snipershide and didn't want to post it on VJJPs thread.
Since you asked here is my personal gun and I have done many other jobs like this on the M&P series.

Looks good. They make an iron with a variety of tips. I guess a person can buy a Sigma and practice with different tips.

Best to just buy M&P backstraps for under $4 it makes easy and cheap practice.
