Here's something I made a while ago that was quick and easy...
I wanted an AR lower vise block for quick easy stuff like mounting sights, trigger replacement, cleaning or whatever, but I wanted it that day because I have no patience. So I took some measurements from an AR magazine, and went out to find a piece of scrap Oak. I cut it down to 2-5/16" X 7/8" and about 7" long, then I cut some slots on the tablesaw, and voila! Instant AR lower vise block.
I know you can buy these for like 10 bucks some places, but the cost was nothing and took about 10 minutes, much better than waiting for the UPS guy. Here's some pics:


I even cut a slot on the other side so I could put the lower in upside down
