Dodge Cummins owners

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

No, what year or type of motor specificlly ?

There is always someone that thinks ad-libing a fuel cocktail is the best thing for motor, injectors, pumps and whatnot.
It's best to nod and smile.

All I put in a Cummins has been Howes at the recommended dose.

Check out Turbo diesel registry for lots of info about your truck.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Is it 2011 model?

I would NOT put oil in the gas tank.

Lucas Diesel conditioner or an additive every once in awhile would be ok. The newer models dont really need all that. I have a 1998 12 valve and I dont put motor oil in the gas tank....

2010 with the 6.7

I have Lucas on hand that I ran through my powerstroke but I have heard good things about the Howes as well.

Thanks for the info!

Amsoil diesel fuel conditioner.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Jeezuz, just drive the fucking thing. Forget all the snake oil shit. After a bit, you'll get over the new thing and it'll just be another old beater.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

The add oil to your fuel came about when they went to low sulfur then ultra low sulfur diesel. Everybody was afraid they were going to burn up pumps and injectors, which was hyped by magazines and so called experts. Now the argument was that when removing the sulfur, they removed lubricating properties of diesel fuel(I don't know, I am not a chemist!). Needless to say it seems it was all for not. I put on over 600,000 miles on in my 4 years in a big truck as an owner operator, and I never had a problem (well, attributed to fuel).

Also, I would skip the fuel additives until you really need them. If you read the MSDS sheet on Power Service, its not much more than paint thinner. Not good on seals. Your better off buying number 1 fuel in the really cold months, and blended fuel when its cold, but not stupid cold. (if you have to change fuel filters when its -30 F. you'll see)

I would run an additive to remove moisture/water from your fuel system toward the end of fall at least. If you have the right fuel for the season, water freezing in the tank (while not running) will be your biggest enemy.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Amsoil diesel fuel conditioner. It aint snake oil. It will make your vehicle run smoother, extend the live of the injectors, and increase mileage. I know because Im a dealer for it and use it in all my vehicles and it does what it says it does.

Or dont use it...makes no difference to me.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

I work for Chrysler I dont think you really want to do that. You have just bought a truck that will basically last forever. Thanks for your support.

Amsoil and Lucas are some damn good companies, and have some great products.

But, what does a "conditioner" "do"?

ETA:

MSDS sheet says more paint thinners:

Solvent naphtha (petroleum), light aromatic 64742-95-6 30 - 60
1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene 95-63-6 30 - 60
Solvent naphtha (petroleum), heavy aromatic 64742-94-5 10 - 30
Mesitylene 108-67-8 5 - 10
Benzene, diethyl- 25340-17-4 1 - 5
Cumene 98-82-8 1 - 5
Xylene 1330-20-7 1 - 5
Naphthalene

Well, being a conditioner, I guess it "conditions"

. I dont know all the tech stuff, but I believe it is a lubricant. I can testify that it made a big difference in my vehicle. Quieted the injectors right down. I also use Amsoil oil, trans fluid and rear end oil. Made about a 10% over all increase in mileage. Equally impressive is how much more smoothely it accelerates, and MUCH quieter.

Its all about friction reduction. Movement = friction = heat= faster wear of parts. Less friction = better.

Another nice thing about Amsoil is anyone can become a dealer and have it shipped right to your house.

But, but Gl, you have a vested interest cuz you sell the stuff, so you're tainted and BTW, aren't you violating a board rule here pushing your product?

Its not my product. He can buy it anywhere. Im just speaking good advice one Hider to another.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Snake oil.
Adding oil to your fuel just imitates engine oil consumption, which will increase carbon fouling of the cylinders and pistons. This is a bad thing.

Some people must think that the engineers who formulate diesel fuel sit around thinking: OK,let's make this fuel eat injectors and pumps in, say, 150000 mi.
I really doubt it.I think they are making fuel do what it needs to do.
As for gasoline, that stuff is crap.

Ditto...

I'm gonna switch over the the amsoil products to see if "it gets better"

But hey the 5.9 is a beast and one of the best motors that dodge ever put in their trucks!

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Lucas is the way to go.. not every tank but about once or twice a month. I have both a 5.9 and newer 6.7. a dpf delete kit and smarty jr is the best fuel millage and reliability mod you can do to the 6.7. It bumped me up to around 21 mpg hand calculated. jump over to cumminsforum lots of good info.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

I would not put 2 cycle in it due to it having a DPF (diesel particulate filter). We had oil recirculators that put new oil from a seperate tank in engine and old oil in fuel on Cummins ISX semi engines. They worked great till 08 when the DPF's came out and we were told that it would F the filter if we ran them on the 08's. I have a 96' Powerstroke w/ 225,000 and it does run and start better w/ Power Service in it. If I dont run it for a tank I do notice a difference. Despite the earlier comment on it. The new ULSD will kill older injectors on pickup engines due to less lubricity. Also if u can stay away from B5 bio-diesel unless u like changing fuel filters.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

First post... marker round more or less.

I have a few dodges cummins trucks (92, 97, 99, 01, 03, 05). You can burn a little oil in the older trucks. Older than 98, but for sure not a 2010 6.7.

Congrats on the truck. I have 1.7 million miles between six trucks. My neighbor is in the Cummins 600K mile club with his 1992 cummins. Great motors.

Re: Dodge Cummins owners

Never heard that one.

But I can tell you I have a 2008 6.7 liter Cummins with 40,000. Been running with the EGR valve unplugged for about 20,000. Just did a DPF delete and added a tuner. I lost about 100 pounds of exhaust system and gained 4 to 4.5 mpg. The DPF is evil!
