Does anybody else use a rifle as a tool?

In the modern world of rifles being a status symbol, who else has a rifle kicking around in the work truck next to the pipe wrench, crowbar, sledgehammer, and crescent wrench?
Box of shells in the console, or glovebox, and you only grab it when you see a varmint, that needs to go to the happy hunting grounds? No $5000 dollar safe queens allowed...

That is great. How long does it take to get your Allen keys out to use them? I'm talking about something that you can grab and fire 5 seconds after you decide you need it. Like a roll of shop towels 15 minutes after you finish your coffee.

I only buy the heaviest of barrels. Never know when you're gonna be on the range and need to bang a T post back into the ground. Wouldn't wanna use a Proof for that!!

Oh it takes me like 2 minutes to get my allen keys. Gotta unlock the tool cabinet, dig out the box its in, find the allen key set within the box, remove the allen key from the plastic case. If I need something immediately I'll just strap it to myself.
Y go diggin for 5 seconds when you can have it immediately.
For realzies, I've got my CCW on me and my rifles are always locked up in a safe at home. If the firearm isn't on me it's locked up. And a "lock" worth a damn is gonna take a while to unlock. No biometric shenanigans for me, analog padlock or bust.
If I spill coffee on myself I'm gonna sit in it in shame for being a klutz.

When I worked on a farm I always had a rifle handy. All my rifles are tools. They get used and taken care of. Grew up with a 30-06 or 30/30 riding either in the window or seat of old trucks. Now I work in town and dont leave anything in my truck. On that note my best friend just had the ATF drop off his pistol todaythat was stolen out of his truck 2 years ago.

I would never even dream of shooting mine because the brass can ding the action upon ejection and that plus barrel wear can degrade their value.

I cycle each action once a month so I can feel them to remind myself that I have a superior collection. Twice a year I’ll dry fire them once each and make a pew noise and a recoil motion for the funsies. Ohh that’s the tops, you can just feel what all that power would actually be like.

Here in ohio, the rifle must be clearly visible. Bolt open or removed. Ammo/magazine in a separate compartment.

I always had a Colt 11.5" SBR and 61 rounds of crappy M855 with me when doing power generation work in the west TX and NM gas fields. I was always by myself, and it was not abnormal to be working at 0200 with no other friendly human closer than 15 miles away.

I used it once on a coyote that had an excessive curiosity of me. Pop pop, and I went back to working.

I like the photos of rifles in the field more; banging steel or splattering varmints, or carried over ridgelines in remote places. A rifle with a lot of honest wear is sure pretty to me.

Actually no. Our laws have changed quite a few times and there are several ways to comply with unloaded transport of rifles.

What you state is but one of the several ways to legally transport an unloaded rifle. Here's the full menu right out of the ORC:

2923.16 (C) No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless the person may lawfully possess that firearm under applicable law of this state or the United States, the firearm is unloaded, and the firearm is carried in one of the following ways:

(1) In a closed package, box, or case;


(2) In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;


(3) In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;


(4) If the firearm is at least twenty-four inches in overall length as measured from the muzzle to the part of the stock furthest from the muzzle and if the barrel is at least eighteen inches in length, either in plain sight with the action open or the weapon stripped, or, if the firearm is of a type on which the action will not stay open or which cannot easily be stripped, in plain sight.

You're probably referring to (4) which applies only to rifles. However, the full text of 2923.16 (C) does not mean that you MUST use (4) exclusively if the "firearm" in question is a rifle.

Note that section 2923.16 (C) applies to "firearms" and says they can be transported in "one of the following ways", meaning subsections (1) through (4). So now what is a "firearm" as defined in the ORC? For that we have to look to 2923.11 Weapons control definitions which says:

(B) (1) "Firearm" means any deadly weapon capable of expelling or propelling one or more projectiles by the action of an explosive or combustible propellant. "Firearm" includes an unloaded firearm, and any firearm that is inoperable but that can readily be rendered operable.

So...........according to a complete reading of the ORC you can transport any firearm (regardless of length/barrel length) ONLY per 2923.16(C)(1), 2923.16(C)(2), or 2923.16(C)(3), BUT you can transport a firearm with a barrel >18" and OAL> 24" using any of the four methods.

Use industrial self-adhesive loop Velcro, and if that fails then plain loop Velcro with G-Flex.
Self-adhesive hook velcro attached to the paper. All stays put, can change it if needed/wet/worn without changing the permanent adhesive bits.
