dog tags

Re: dog tags

When I was in the NG we had a Dog Tag machine in my unit. I allowed my Company Clerk to make replacement dog tags for vets (after they proved they were vets).

Contact your local NG or Reserve Unit, they MAY get him replacement dog tags.

I don't know if there was a policy or regulation for or against giving replacement dog tags to vets. I just did it.

Re: dog tags

That nick in the 3rd dog tag from the top is very unique. That nick in the tag was placed between the two front teeth of the KIA and was kicked. This was to make sure that the tag stayed with the KIA.

This practice was later discontinued due to the viewed insensitivity of the dead soldier/marine/airman/seaman.

Sorry I don't mean to argue here but back when I was in high school a good friend of mine's dad had two machines to make dog tags, one was hand operated so every letter had to be chosen and stamped by pulling a leaver, and he also had an automatic machine that made one hell of a racket when it stamped them out. For about 3 summers we used to go to local fairs and make tags for whomever wanted them and for anything, dogs, kids, vets, you name it. Well to get to the point the hand press used all rounded edge tags but the machine used and ONLY used the notched tags, this is where it held the tags down. Yeah maybe they had been kicked into the teeth of someone's skull but I think you would be facing UCMJ charges.

If you don't believe me heres a scorce for you : DOG TAG NOTCH!

Try the back of the VFW magazine or Ranger Joe's

Re: dog tags

Most of the ones on eBay look like fakes. Hate for someone to buy the wrong thing.
I can only go back to 1969 when the Army gave me my first set. Over the next 26 years I had to replace them several times and looked at a lot of them during inspections. Each replacement had certain characteristics.
They all had a ridge around the edge. Never saw a flat piece of metal.
Issued ones only had one hole and it measured 1/8th inch or so. Slightly larger than the chain. If you put a piece of paracord or the plactic loop (sold seperately at clothing sales) on to protect your neck from the chain rub it would not slip through hole.
Never saw one with a notch.
