Gunsmithing DRO for lathe.

Re: DRO for lathe.

DRO PROS are good people with a great product! I just finished helping a friend install one on his Grizzly G0709. He bought the EL400 "Machine Specific" Kit, the scales are magnetic and you can actually cut the scale to whatever length you need and their slim line to.
I went with the Grizzly brand DRO on my G0709 and am very satisfied with it. I don't think you can go wrong with one or the other but in my opinion the magnetic scales are a good way to go as far as their slim and can be cut to fit your lathe.

Re: DRO for lathe.

I use an Acu-Rite made just for a lathe, it allows me to touch off up to 10 tools. It is really fast having your tools set up with known zeros. I personally would not buy a new digital for a lathe that you could not preset all your tools. I make my living on my machines and need to make machining as simple and easy as possible. If this is a machine you are going to use on a regular basis and you are going to spend the money for a DRO spend a few dollars more and get something that will really make you money.

Re: DRO for lathe.

The accurites are great. They use a glass scale that will read the location of the tool even if the ways and gibs wear. Thats not always so with the other types which read off the gear train or servo's.

I also went through DRO pros for my lathe. I got the magnetic (rather than glass) version. They were considerably easier to install than glass and so far I'm pretty happy with them.
