Droid Phones Thread

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Dont know how many of you use Sprint....but I was in Houston this week and didn't want to pay Hilton $20 a day for internet so I downloaded the PDAnet tethering app for my EVO 4G. (Free Version) I was surfing the internet in no time, and it didn't cost me anything! I did a speed test while I was on the 4G network and i was right around 3.2 Mbps.

Kind of, yes. With tethering you basically share your mobile device's data connection (3G, 4G.. whatever) with your laptop so that you can connect to the Internet. This comes in handy when your service at home goes down or if you're someplace where there is no WiFi signal but you want to use your laptop for whatever reason. Works quite well but with the increased bandwidth used it tends to put more strain on the system which is why carriers attempt to charge for it. Rooting allows you to use 3rd party programs to do this w/o having to pay additional to use the (unlimited in most cases) data plan you already pay for.

Rafael.....it's an APP that is in the Android Market.....if Sprint didn't want me to use it, they wouldn't allow us access to it. Sprint has a similar service that they charge a nominal fee for, but it is because the phone sets up a WiFi network and allows up to 5 devices to connect to the phone and share its data connection.

As far as the petty theft comment.....I pay my $10 a month for my Unlimited Premium 4G Data Connection.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

If Sprint has no problem with it, then I am mistaken.
Of course, I was not directing that towards anyone who is acting within the plan they have acquired from the provider.
Nothing wrong with that!

I have noticed others on Android boards discussing what is certainly theft of service, and I assumed this was the case here.
The phrase "<span style="font-weight: bold">with the increased bandwidth used it tends to put more strain on the system which is why carriers attempt to charge for it</span>", was the reason I said what I did.
If the provider offers this as an additional service, then they certainly did not intend for you to benefit, and burden the network they provide, without paying for it.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Verizon and AT&T definitely say this is a no-no. But many media sources have Sprint spokesmen saying that they don't plan on blocking USB Tethering. Also, they are on record saying that when Froyo comes out (Which will have Wifi Tethering built-in) Sprint has no plans to block that service provided by the new Android OS. You will however have to keep in mind that we are only allocated 5GB of data usage on the 3G network and Unlimited on the 4G network. So, if you can play within those boundaries, you are good to go!

ETA: You have to remember Sprint has been hurting the last 3-4 years with record numbers in the loss of customers. They are trying to appeal to the market again, by offering great prices, and expanded usage of their network. Verizon and AT&T are established enough and have been doing well enough as of late, that they can afford to make a few customers mad by charging $30 a month for USB Tethering or WiFi Tethering.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Petit theft?
Did someone kidnap Lowlight again?!

Rafael.
Android is open source software. As such, developers are encouraged to come up with inventive and useful applications, most of which are offered to the community for free.

The Carriers, like Verizon and Sprint, benefit greatly from these developers' efforts. All they have to do is provide a device configured with an Android operating system on it, and the community supports it with quality software and innovations.

No one is stealing anything. That's simply not the way open source works.

My agreement comes with an unlimited data plan. What I do with that is really up to me.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Data is Data....whether it's 5gb to a phone or 5gb to a PC....

Dan Hesse is smart enough to know that their is a market out there that wants the freedom to do what they want with their phones. The US cell market is the nastiest/money groveling bunch in the entire world. They find a way to nickel and dime the customer wherever they can. And the prices.......go do some comparison shopping with some of the European carriers, you'd be disgusted at how much we overpay for service.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Tucker;

Lowlight? Was I banned?

The fact that Android is open source has nothing to do with theft of service. Last I checked, Verizon charges an additional $30 for tethering.....but this may have changed.
If you carry the open-source argument to the network...then all airtime would be free. That is certainly not the case.

From your statement I would assume that if you feel the price of something is more than you think it is worth, you have the right to steeal more of the product?
If the price of Budweiser is too high at the convenience store do you hide a second six-pack under your jacket and just pay for the one?

And they do...so we are good to go. I will respect their terms of service when it comes to the data usage "caps." I don't plan on going over their 5gb window on their 3G network, and I don't live in a 4G network area. (Only see it when I travel)

I will agree with you when it comes to the theft of "more product." Respect the limitations put in place....

Re: Droid Phones Thread

I pay Comcast x dollars/month for their data services, which are equally unlimited.
Whether I choose to connect one device or 50 is completely up to me.

The whole undue strain on the resources thing is a throwback from when the bulk of us were on dial-up and fully discharging device batteries improved their usable life.

The carriers are improving their networks everyday to stay ahead of the increased demands that come from such usage.

While no one has a true 4G network at this time, Verizon will soon be rolling out LTE to get ahead of ATT's bogus claims of 4G (actually WiMax).

Build t and they will come.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Yeah, I am anxious for more network speed as well.
I was about to donate my Droid to my girl and upgrade early to the Droid X.....but I fall outside Verizons rules for early upgrade even though I am due during this calendar year(November).

I may just wait a bit. Saw a story on a new Motorola Droid that will sport a 2-GHz processor late this year.......damn but that should be a battery killer.

Still, it may be designed around LTE? Maybe?

Re: Droid Phones Thread

TiKL app brings PTT (Push To Talk) services to Droid phones.

http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=tikl

Instantly talk to one or many of your friends with the touch of a button. All you need is their phone numbers. No more waiting for the phone to ring. Simple and free, TiKL turns your android phone into the ultimate Push To Talk (PTT) Walkie Talkie.

No voice plan or SMS used for calls.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

I was excited when I first heard about it because it seemed like a cool application.

We tried it when it first came out and while they may have made improvements my problem wasn't the idea it was the application of said idea. The program itself was fine but the real world use was what was faulted. Basically everyone that I could use it with had a Droid and likely Verizon. This means I get free airtime anyway and free texts so I couldn't find a use for it. The only time we had it installed I found that the audio alerts were obnoxious and you couldn't adjust them plus the messages come through whether you're ready for them or not. This can be especially bad if you're in mixed company with jokester friends or if you simply aren't at your phone or your music is up and miss the message entirely. I couldn't think of a time where voice calls and text messages weren't convenient but this was. Just didn't seem like a very useful application to me or my friends.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Day 2 with the Droid X and I think that the phone is awesome. I did have some issues caused by the Verizon service representative installing advanced app killer on the phone. Once removed and power cycled the phone works like charm with only one exception. WiFi is buggy as hell but it looks like it's a software error that will be addressed with FroYo (2.2(. WiFi tethering on the other hand works flawlessly.

C:Geo: great geo caching app if you are interested.

Thinking Space: great mind mapping app.

Sniper Vs. Sniper: Fun but they should have included some form of bullet drop and wind-age.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

To clear up the information about Sprint and tethering using PDANet or the other applications out there.

PDANET uses tethering via USB (or Bluetooth), which allows you to plug your phone into your computer via a USB data cable and share your phones internet connection.

The service Sprint offers ($20 a month) turns your Evo 4G into a Wi-fi hotspot, allowing up to 8 devices (other cell phones, laptops, desktops, etc.) to use that phones internet connection.

Sprint has made a press release stating that they are not in the habit of blocking apps on their phone, and that if there is an app in the marketplace, users are more than welcome to use it.

Sprint has some hardwired code in the baseband chip that allows them to prevent applications from exploiting this feature. Of course, if you root the phone, then you can do pretty much whatever you want.

The last part there can be borderline illegal. Rooting is not, but performing actions against the terms of service and contract you have signed can be illegal. Of course they wont sue you or anything, but still, take the high road.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Bought my girlfriend and myself new Incredibles.. Its a 4 week wait until they are shipped tho.. Can't wait to check it out!

Was going to get the X but I hate how big it is.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Got my Motorola Droid last year when they were first coming out. Like it greatly but the darn thing has a mind of its own, just starts doing things without any prompt from me such as voice searching, maps, etc.. Operating system is up to date. Maybe it needs an exorcism or at least a smarter operator. Does the Incredible do full Skype two-way audio/video with twin cameras similar to the iPhone 4???

Re: Droid Phones Thread

The EVO will do it.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

I use Skype voice call on my 3G Incredible.

Again, the whole 4G thing that Sprint has been making such a big deal about isn't really 4G.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

i just purchased the Incredible by HTC and I'm really liking it so far. I bought the "shooter" app of it but I haven't got to try it out on paper yet but just it playing with it so far seems impressive.

I heard on the news recently about how Apple lost a suit that no allows people to "jail break" their phone and be able to get the I-phone to work on other networks. I'm not sure exactly what this will end up meaning and I'm doubting I would ever do it, but how or will this affect the Android based phone market?

If you read it on the internets it MUST be true. Nothing that hasn't been triple fact checked evar gets posted to teh intrawebs!

Re: Droid Phones Thread

Hey Tucker...give me a recommendation for Droid + Service provider.

I'm sick of AT&T...and need to upgrade to a smart phone (personal) and combine it with my blackberry (ie: toss the BB). I currently have two phones, and dun want two.

I'm thinking Verizon, but would like opinions.

Re: Droid Phones Thread

I'm happy with Verizon, but much of that has to do with what the best coverage and plans are in your area.

I assume that Austin is big enough to have all major carriers, including Sprint.

So I'd say shop Sprint and Verizon head to head and decide between them.

Sprint has the Evo and Verizon has the X. Both are great phones.
