So any of you guys in the eclipse path? Anyone travelling to see it? Assuming it's not cloudy weather!

Looking forward to some cool photos from anyone who is in the path... or close enough to get interesting viewing.

We get about nothing here... maybe a graze.

Should be a fantastic event for those who like stargazing, so to speak. And are in the direct line!

Good idea, Sirh.

Apparently many have that idea. Ive got a good friend in Charleston SC. I was going to go down and visit since I get free rooms with Hilton points. Not a room available for those dates. Might see if he can put me up and take a ride out of town that evening.

I live in Louisiana. We'll get about 85% here. But my son and I, like a couple dumbasses, are going to drive up to Padua Kentucky to watch it. We've talked about it for a year, but when I finally got around to getting a hotel room, the closest room was in Sikeston, MO, about 80 miles away. We'll get up about 3 or 4 AM, and drive to Paducah, hopefully beating a good bit of the traffic. All I can say is, wish us luck.

Cheyenne here, over 90% coverage. Too many crazies coming here to even want to travel north. We're expecting fuel shortages, traffic jams, higher crime, etc. Not to mention all hotels are sold out, and charging upwards of $1200 per night during that time. The state has received at least one call regarding regulations on sacrifices. It's going to be a cluster fuck. Glad I don't live in Casper, they're already preparing for craziness, and are putting on an eclipse festival.

I was in Okinawa back 87-88.

19 years old and dumb.

I remember one day at Schwab the day light got "weird". It just wasn't full day light but it was a clear, Pacific sky.

Mentally it caused unease, it was like what the fuck is going on. The other Jarheads were also like WTF. We had no clue.

One of the Corpsman told us it's an eclipse and had some welding glass so that we could see the partial passing of the moon.

I think now how in the distant past, "advanced" cultures would be unnerved by an eclipse event and begin sacrificing virgins to the light God, and I understand it.

Im surprised we even picked up on it but the change in light was that noticeable.

It affected something in the lizard brain we all maintain. Instinctually, in my ignorance of what was going on, I think my body was thinking storm coming or giant predator blocking out the sun about to pounce on you.

Always remember that event and that feeling.

Edit - Just researched it. Date was probably Sept 27, 1987. An almost total eclipse in that area of the world. Like a lot of experiences I had the chance to experience in the mil.....I wish I had of been smarter and more mature. Why do we waste the military on the young?

I have been waiting 8 years for this. I got a book for my 35th about eclipses back then while living in CO. Thought I'd travel to Jackson Hole to watch. Now I'm in Ohio and was going to go to Paducah, KY.

The thought of putting up with the hoardes and traffic for only 14% more coverage than here is keeping me home. Should be cool still to see.

I was in Yokosuka at that time or floating around somewhere. We must have been underway now that I think of it. Missed too many real nice quakes at sea also. :(

I'm afraid we're not gonna get the money shot down here on the Columbia. Between the sea fog and the BC fire smoke we're screwed.

No sacrifices. Think we just came back from the field and were cleaning gear between the one story low barracks right along the seawall at the bay. Just a neat memory.

There was one when I was a kid in school, but don't remember much other than building some box to look through. Also saw a partial eclipse in the early to mid 90's. It was enough to make the cows freak out.

I was a kid back in the mid '70s when we had an eclipse come through here. (over?) The school 'stopped' and we weren't allowed outside at the time, so that nobody's eyes got melted. It was televised in each and every room, just for this occasion. Add to that, the local paper put up a REALLY good sequence of photo's super-imposed on our Legislative Building. The building is just stone with a Golden Boy statue atop of it, but the sequence of before-during-after the even sure turned out great.

I still have that shot, and maybe I'll find it and see about putting it up here, if anyone's interested?

My house is in the path of totality here in Wyoming.
We're expecting thousands of tourists for the event, every hotel and cabin has been booked for over a year. People are getting $1500-2000 a night on air bnb for their homes renting to people from all over the world. Hopefully the forest fires simmer down some, it looks like downtown Tokyo smog in the air right now... Going to be alot of pissed off tourists if they cant see the eclipse.

Live in Greenville SC, in the path of totality. Took the day off to hang out with My 5 year old son,and watch it. Hope the weather holds out.He is so excited,would be heart breaking for him if it clouds up =/

I live about an hour north of the Madisonville Hopkinsville Kentucky area. I work near there. Farmers are renting camping spots for $1000+. City's are expecting HEAVY traffic along the Hwy 41 corridor. I'll be watching it from work if the weather is good. This area is supposed to be one of the prime areas for it. We've been hearing that traffic is supposed to be crazy nuts.

WTF IS Wrong with people? If I do anything Ill just drive down a couple hours, stop at a WalMart parking lot, watch and head home. This aint the 2nd coming of Jesus for Christ's sake.

The last total eclipse that was visible in the US was in 1979. I didn't see it, so yeah, I took the day off from work to go see this one. Not sure why, seeing it on the internet like most will do will probably be just as good.

Don't try to look directly at it. I was in Norfolk in 1987 and made that mistake. It was only a quick glance, but my eye hurt for hours afterward. Permanent retinal injury can occur. I was very lucky.

Yeah, I was a young wiseass. I'm older now...

Fucking EH Batman, I will be in Grand Island visiting a friend. Which turns out as one of the best spots to see it. We were going to head to Car-Hedge but fuck me $500+ for a hotel room that is normally 39.99, and they expect 250,000+ there. I do not get it at all. I believe there will be another in 6 or 7 years that will be about 200 miles south of this one.

I remember the one in '79, also there was a partial a few years ago (less than 5). I could understand if it was 2000. years ago and we had no clue. But shit it is 2017 and really is it boils down to the "sun shining on every dog's ass once" . Like sitting at a red light and the car in front of you has a turn signal synchronized with yours for a few flashes. It is just timing plain and simple.

I think an eclipse is like Hally's Comet... comes rarely. And is very interesting once-in-a-lifetime thing. I remember when the comet Hale Bop showed up... `996??? I was mesmerised by it out in the dark North Country. Reminds one that there is a huge universe out there.

I spent several years at NASA.... so odd things out in space-land are in the blood so to speak. We are a very, very tiny dot. Things that remind us of the huge mechanical clock of which we are a part... is really something I get into.

Can't wait to see you guys' pictures and experiences. I have some friends going, but can't get away. I'll get a partial here at Schloss Nitrocellulose. Hoping for 'sunny' weather! And live vicariously through you guys in the path.

I didn't know there was another one in 7 years... may have to start planning a motorcycle trip to see that one.

I was fortunate to see Haley's at Fan Mountain Observatory south of Charlottesville. They gave us good bino's and a few small telescopes. It was very impressive.

I understand what you are saying, and the universe is amazing for sure. Eclipses happen all the time. just depends if you are in the right place. here is a schedule through 2030.

Well, the being in the right place part is sort of important, because if you aren't there, you can't see it. This is the first one in the continental USA in almost 40 years, so "all the time" might not be the best description. According to your web link, the next total eclipse will be in July of 2019, and if you are lucky enough to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you might catch it.

Tiny dot, yes. But significant, too; especially to us.

Any eclipse is "an event of note" to me; but not really personally earth shaking. In terms of making a physical difference in my life, that's pretty minimal.

I get a mild kick out of watching all the prognostication, hand wronging, and trepidation that accompanies them. It's a lesson in how the more things change, the less things change. We're largely a superstitious species; and on such days it shows, bigtime.

I have no plans involving the eclipse, other than avoiding eye injury and staying off the roads while the less stable attempt negotiating twilight at noon.

I may see if I can rig up a Plague Doctor Mask, for effect.

Just an update from Hopkinsville, KY just outside of Fort Campbell. it looks to be a packed weekend with rv all over, the grocery stores have been running low but not out. there has been a couple of short outage at a couple of gas stations.
all city owned places are rented out for parking, fairgrounds, all parks, churches and farmers. have heard of people renting out spare bead rooms. Not my thing but for the right price. lol.
There will be many vendors and have seen many food trucks coming in yesterday. there is around 45 food trucks last I heard from the news. this will not be a good weekend to eat out so we have plenty as always to cook.
The news was talking about the Hopkinsville airport and they have over 100 reservations for landing Monday morning. So many that if you do not have a reservation that they will not allow to land. Fort Campbell is supposed to help with the air traffic.
While I will be glad when this is over but I am happy for the influx of capital to the community. Estimation is 30 million dollars for the county this weekend. Population of the county is only 73,309.

Wyoming's population of just under 600,000 is expected to swell to 1,700,000 for the weekend. Sadly I feel that the path of totality will look like this Tuesday morning.

Well lets see. Burning man takes 1 month of clean up every year. Before BLM made them get a permit and face fines for not cleaning up it was on us tax payers to foot that bill. I am not aware of the current conditions in Oregon, Idaho, or Wyoming but this time of year it is pretty damn dry normally so I would actually place a small wager that someone starts a wild/forest fire that by eclipse time is of epic proportions.

Oh, wait. My bad. You mean Bureau of Land Management. Forgot. They are probably worse than BLM anyway.

Wouldn't a really big wildfire engulfing a drum circle or two be just epic? Especially if started by the guys using magnifying glasses and cereal boxes to watch the sun (or toast ants.)

Remember, The Moon blocks out all the harmful rays. So watching through binoculars or with the unaided eye is fine and encoraged.

For the record and as I stated in a previous post I will be in Grand Island, Nebraska. Which just happens to be the home of Hornady. Anyway the hype is getting pretty strong around here with 100's of thousands heading to Idaho and Wyoming. So in the end I may have to eat Crow, we will see.

But so far only two things in my life have met or exceeded the "sham-wow" hype/expectations. The 1st would be the first time I was with in 5ft of a Top Fuel dragster, and the 2nd would be every blow job I have ever had. So the Bar is pretty high.

That is funny because it is obvious to me that BLM means different things east and west of Colorado. Every time I see BLM and Furgeson, Baltimore, Charleston Ect....I wonder for a split second. " what is the Bureau of Land Management's problem?". Takes me about one one thousand, two one thousand.
