Suppressors Educate me on 1911's

So...i got my first 1911, its basically a bone stock Springfield Armory Loaded version. I am going to take it and shoot it a bit, dont really wanna modify anything though.

I do want to know about magazines though, what should i look for getting for this? Do all 1911 mags fit?

Government or "standard" mags will fit the Commander and Government (Full Size) models. Officer mags are strictly for officer or Micro models. Not sure which model of Loaded you have since SA sells them it all three types.

Lots of opinions on good mags but Wilson, Tripp, CMC, etc all make good mags. My one piece of advice is to buy one and test it before you invest in a bunch. Occasionally a gun won't feed properly with one brand.

I shot IDPA with a customized 1911 for years and settled on Chip McCormick Power Mags (8-round). I found them to lock back the slide reliably while the Wilson mags failed to do so. Both fed rounds just fine and were easy to disassemble for cleaning. Look for a base bad thick enough to give reliable seating when you slap the magazine home. A magazine with a thin base bad might not seat reliably if you have an extended magazine well.

+1 for the Wilson 8-rounders and Chip's 8-round Powermag.
Never had a problem with either one.

To me, the Wilsons are 'sleaker' but I prefer the metal follower on the McCormicks.

+1 on the CMC PWR + Mags, not so much on the Wilson's

I have done extensive testing with both CMC PWR+ 8Rd mags and Wilson 47D. I have never had a single failure to feed with the CMC mags using every type of ammo imaginable. I have personally run 200 230Gr Gold Dots, 200 230 Gr Fed Tac Bonded +P, and 200 230Gr Ranger T-Series through the CMC PWR + with no problems. The Wilson 47's when I ran the same test had a 1% fail to feed rate. The Wilson's are now only see range duty with FMJ ammo. Howdy El...

This type of stuff is why I finally let go of my 1911 obsession. I love the 1911 and now that I dont own one I want another but I get frustrated with making sure everything is functional and reliable all the time.

I used CMC and Wilson 47ds, both worked well for me. Any reliability issues I have had in 1911s I could trace to timing or ejector tuning.

I finally came to the realization that 1911s were for me like a supermodel - they will turn your head and have some great qualities but get to know them and it probably won't take long to get tired of their $%^!.

Went to HKs, own three and out of several thousands rounds none of them have hiccuped once with any ammo period. That takes the sting out of their $60 mags a little.

When I own another 1911, and I will cause I cant help myself, it will run the same Wilson and CMCs I still have.

El had the best method I think - just get a couple quality mag brands and run some extensive testing through your gun and see what it likes, just like you should do with your carry ammo.

I have CMC shooting star 8rd and they've ran fine in my 1911's. Doesn't mean that I may get a different 1911 and all of a sudden that doesn't change...

Another vote for the wilson 47D. I've run the same 6 mags through a dozen 1911's wih no problems.

Test 47D's, Elite's, and CMC PowerMags with the JHP's you intend to use with them for carry, and whatever practice ammo you'll run through them, too.

Sometimes different guns like different mags. All of the above are good mags that are worth looking at though.

If one of the above runs noticable better than the rest, stock up on those...but test every one before trusting them.

They're good mags while they last, but have a tendency to crack at the corners where the feedlips meet the tube.

Magazines should release the cartridge so that the rim of the case slides up under the extractor when feeding into the chamber. Take your recoil spring out to check this and cycle slowly by hand. Take your barrel out of slide and place barrel into frame with the slide stop pin inserted to hold barrel in frame. Push barrel all the way to rear so it's lying on top of the frame adjacent to the feed ramp. You should have .032" gap from top of feed ramp to the chamber throat. If less it needs setbck and throated. This is a major (common/typical) problem with 1911's. In many cses this will make a good magazine look bad. Extractor tension will also cause problems with feeding if too tight. Loose will cause extraction problems. It's a whole picture thing, not just the magazine. As an aside, most of the major 1911 custom shops cannot properly fit a barrel. This year I have repaired or replaced many barrels in so called custom pistols.

I use CMC mags and have thousands of round with them. They function in all of my guns and are interchangeable between all of my 45's. The Wilson mag are nice but don't seat well on my commander or officer.

But then again, if I wanted a 1911 that nice, I'd probably build it myself.

I have 4 Tripp Research mags for my 9mm STI Spartan and have had absolutely zero malfunctions with this set-up and probably 800-1000 rounds down the tube.

I can't speak to their .45 mags, but when I do get a 1911 in .45, I will be ordering from Tripp. I would highly recommend them.

The only rounds I've shot is the Winchester white box 115's. The STI is pretty much a game/target gun. I only wish I could do the thing justice.

I have used all types of mags in my different 1911's. I have used Wilsons, Chip McCormick, metalform, gi mags and Devel (I think there not many of these left). The Wilson's and Chip McCormicks are the ones I use the most. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

Best to find some people with various Brands and find out which ones your gun/ammo choice will function with.....

My Wilson cqb didn't like WC47D's, CMC's, or about anything else......so it's important to test things out before dumping $$$$$ on the "best" mag.

Look into Dave Lauck's mags too. Spendy, but........

Pretty much WC, Tripp, CMC run the table for most people.
