Rifle Scopes Falcon Menace: new knobs and old knobs

I just got a Menace 4-14 FFP from a fellow member that I couldn't be more thrilled about. It has the "old style" knobs on it; I didn't know there was a difference. What is the dif? Also, the side focus knob doesn't have any distances marked on it, and I can't tell where I'm lining up the setting. Meaning there's no mark of any kind on the body to indicate where one lines up the dial for the desired setting. It doesn't really have settings, per se, but just a dial that looks like a volume control. Can this knob be swapped out for one with numbers?

The old style knobs sometimes dont line up with the zero marker when returning the knob to zero. The new knobs feature grub screws that allow accurate adjustment back to zero. These are a retro upgrade. The knobs are available from your Falcon retailer.
The parallax knob was changed from numbered to volume control late last year I believe. My understanding is that the numbers were always indicative only and may or may not suit the customers particular eye sight hence a move to a "volume control"

Oh, okay. So the "new knobs" are not what's being manufactured, but are upgrades you can make after the fact? Weird.

Maybe I don't understand the side focus thing. I'll dial up the side focus to what's clear for me, but does that automatically get rid of the parallax effect? Isn't that what the knob and distance settings are for? BTW, I'm new to this whole world of long range shooting, so more details are more helpful. Thanks.

All new models from Falcon to the retailer have the new knobs. Retailers may still be selling stock with the old knobs. If you have a model with the screw in the top of the turret, you should be able to replace this with new knobs from your retailer with the side grub screws. We offer this as a free upgrade for our customers as Falcon passed on the upgrade knobs to us at no cost.

To get a clear picture, adjust the diopter first. Point the scope at a featurelss background, blue sky or a white wall works well. Dont point it at the sun. Then adjust the diopter till the reticle is clear and sharp. Diopter is the focus ring closest to your eye on the occular bell. This is something you only ever need to do once. To remove parallax, adjust the side parallax knob until the picture appears clear. Then move your head slightly from side to side while looking at the target. If you notice that the reticle moves in relation to the target then you still have parallax that needs to be fine tuned. Turn the side parallax knob in small increments untill the reticle doesnt appear to move.

Put your OWN numbers on the parallax knob. The pre-numbered ones are useless to me, unless I can loosen the knob and "zero" it to whatever distance I deem most important.

Never got far enough with the one I had to know whether the numbers stayed accurate after I zero'd it for 100 yards.

The numbers aren't the same for everyone?

Thanks Digit. I didn't realize the target would appear to move if there was parallax occurring. Should I just turn the knob then and until clear and not worry about the settings? It doesn't even appear to have a hash mark to line up with anyways.
