Fastest 6mm

The work on the 6mm and 270WSM hybrid has started. Action, stock, and barrels are ordered. The reamer is on order as well. This will be a really cool rifle when its done. Think we are going to call it the 6mmC4.

It gets costly when you do not do with work. I use only Krieger or Shilen Select match and a local well known and a not so cheap local gunsmith (one of his more famous rifles 600-Yard World Record Light Gun ). But you get what you pay for in the end. Longest kill is so far is 683.5 yards on a ground hog (it took to shots, misjudged the wind that far out). We are looking at building me another 6.5wsm or a dedicated 125gr BT 300wsm, what can I say I have a slight need for speed.

I would think a 6mm-06 Ackley Improved would be very close to your design requirements.

I have a .25-06 Ackley with a 28" barrel and shoot a 100 gr. SMK at 3660fps. I also had a pet load of 75gr Sierra Varminter at 3900+/-. Just for grins though. Accuracy was less than desirable (about 1.5MOA) , but dang they screamed.

Check this out...

Years ago Rick Jamison of Shooting Times developed his own 6mm wildcat that was a 7mm Remington Mag necked down to 6mm for coyote hunting. I dont recall the velocities that it was producing but it was pretty impressive. Naturally the barrel life was limited but so is anthing pushed that hard.

A 280 is just a 30-06 necked to 7mm. That wildcat already exists, in the 6mm-06. It is a ballistic twin to the 240 Weatherby which is reasonably fast, but certainly not in the arena being discussed here.

A 280 is almost a 30-06 but not exactly. It's about .050" longer. I had a 6mm-280 built about 20 years ago. I got rid of it about 10 years ago and was going to have a new one built with a 26° shoulder instead of the 17.5° one. I bought a new chamber reamer and a new case form die and have never used it. I still have my original, once used, reamer, case form/trim die, and loading dies. If anyone is interested in them, I'd sell them for a reasonable price.

I don't think there is any reason to put a 6mm bullet in a larger case than this.

There is a way to get 5500+FPS out of a 22cal 55gr with good barrel life. Check out Remington Accelerator and JD Components are producing .30 cal Sabots to fire a .223 bullet from a 30cal bore of your choice. 300RUM would get it over 6000FPS, but I heard it tends to tear itself apart from too high of velocity. J4 jackets would be a must for the RUM.

They are working on a 6mm/243 for a 270 case, or something like that.

For all intents and purposes, the 280 is a 30-06. The 0.050" amounts to no meaningful difference. Obviously there are those here who disagree with your assertion as to how much case should be assigned to a 6mm bullet, otherwise, this thread wouldnt exist.

I'd be interested in knowing how many of those that disagree have actually owned one. The only reason I used a case that big was because I had a long action and thought it would be a waste of the long action to use a 6mm Remington AI.

LR, I could care less about the 280 and 06 stuff. But I do agree with your signature. Glocks do suck. I never leave home without my 1911! :)

Any news on the 6mmC4?

We actually changed the design and went back to the SAUM case. So this will basically be a 6mm4S. The little brother to the 6.5 4S that GAP developed. This was a collaboration with GAP and Copper Creek to come up with this speed demon. We are hoping for 3700-3800 with moderate pressures. We will see what happens. The stock is done, barrels are here, action is ready to go. Just waiting on the reamer to arrive!

Orkan, did you end up deciding on a fast 6mm?

I shoot the 55gr NBT's out of my 6mm Remington. Never chrono'd the round but the Hodgdons load data says it should be over 4k fps. I know it's accurate and smokes the shit out of yotes, and that's what matters to me.
If you are looking to get 5 in the Mag, you may not want to go with a magnum based case. The smaller dia cases can easily get you over 4k.

Thanks for the update. I was hoping someone would do a 6mm SAUM :) Good man KYS!

.244 H&H. H&H still chambers a rifle in it, iirc it's a .375 necked down to .243. I know you "don't care" about bbl life, but either way it's less than 400. I don't care what your intentions are, but less than 400 rounds won't last you a summer of shooting.
