F'd up barrel. Problem Found! (fixed) New Gun!!

Just picked up a mk2 tr. It's my first rimfire that I want to be as accurate as possible. Any special break in procedures for the barrel or do I just go shoot the hell out of it?

(After i get a new gun i can start this part)

I figured since i was shooting from 10 yards with my oversized smooth bore i would start from there.

then 25yrds

and on to 50

all this in a 15 mph wind.
Now I can get to work on me!!

Yep shoot it. The build-up of lead deposits in the tiny imperfections of the bore is what helps increase consistancy and therefore accuracy in a rimfire. Cleaning a rimfire is also not required unless accuracy falls off or the bore is dirtied by a foreign substance (mud, water, Jello Pudding Pops ect...)

How does lead help a rimfire barrel out ?

Keeping the chamber clean is where most people make mistakes , a corbon ring is formed and can hurt accuracy. Carbon residual is good for a barrel in the short term but lead thats a new one on me

Bill Cosby has ruined many a .22LR barrel over the years!!! Just say NO to pudding pops!!

Seriously, just shoot it. Depending on the ammo you are shooting, how much lube is on it and how dirty it shoots, you shouldn't have to clean all that often. Keeping the chamber clean is actually more important than the barrel (but naturally, you don't want too crudded up a barrel either).

So,
First thing I did was run a patch with a drop of bore solvent just so I could feel like I was starting from scratch. Next a couple oiled patches ( not sure why ), then a couple dry patches. Went out on my range to punch some holes or hole I hoped. Not the case. This thing was all over the place. I tried three different kind s of ammo, none of it being anything special cause the dealer I bought the gun from didn't have good stuff in stock, plus I didn't think I would really matter until I got a few hundred down the barrel. Anyhow, I might as well been shooting terds. I couldn't even find the paper at 50 yrds. I shot till dark and called it quits.

I went straight to the work bench to find out what in the hell was falling apart and the first thing I noticed was a whole shit ton of oil still in the crown, oops. Guess I was so excited to get shooting I forgot to wipe it down.

I hope this was the problem.

Ps. I bought a Vortex crossfire 4-16x50 illuminated. AO 30mm for it. Pretty sweet for $200

I always thought that the "seasoning" shots lubed the bore. Either way, it works. Here is an example here. They key is that you shoot the same make and model ammo and if you switch, you need to clean out the bore.

As far as break-in goes, it is not needed nor will it do any good. Just shoot it until accuracy improves.

All I know is none of my .22s will shoot worth a crap clean. So either the build up of lead or lube is doing something. I agree that the throat and chamber are usually the first thing to spoil accuracy, and a quick cleaning with a dry brush will help. I know I've read about leading in the barrel somewhere (so therefore it must be true, right. LOL!)

A good chance the barrel was ruined due to excess (any) oil being left in the bore upon shooting as evidenced by the oozing of oil at the muzzle. The oil creats a hydrolic wedge as it can not move through the barrel as fast as the bullet does; something has to give. This hydrolic wedge destroys the barrel's accuracy.
Next time (with a new barrel or gun), apply to the bore a solvent; skip the oil and run plenty of clean dry patches to ensure a clean, dry barrel. Always allow a few shots to "season" a clean barrel. Keep the chamber clean and only clean the bore when accuracy falls off. Good luck

what kind of cleaning rod are you using with your 22? If its not .177 you may be doing more harm than good.

I'm a fan of a know on the end of weedwhacker line then threading a patch on it and drawing through th ebore.

After a cleaning like you gave it, it may take plenty of rounds to settle down.

Same settling down period applies when ammos are switched.....

I ran dry patches through before I shot it. The excess oil in the crown was from the fact that I ran the oiled patch in from the bore.


I am using .177 cleaning equipment. Not the best stuff though. I will be trying the weedeater line next.

Now that you guys have me scared. Is it possible that this problem is due to the ammo

Yes it could totally be the ammo. Not many of my .22s shoot winchester ammo well except Dyna Points. Your second group was much better with 2 fliers. Try some more ammo and find what it likes. Most bulk ammo is real junk for accuracy although you might get a good batch. Its mostly fun to shoot and cheap. All of my .22s shoot 40 grain bullets most accurate.A patchworm is a nice cleaning kit,I also use an otis with a .17 cal. setup to fit into tight spots. Good luck dont panic.

Even with the crappiest ammo out there you should have a 1" group at 10Y.

OK, those are terrible groups at 10 yards. I still wouldn't panic until you try some Wolf or Eley ammo. My new savage did better than yours, but was still pretty awful with bulk ammo. With Eley, it shoots 3/8" groups at 50 yards and 1" groups at 100 yards.

Is you crown clean? No burrs? Are you <span style="text-decoration: underline">sure</span> the scope is mounted solidly?

I doubt you ruined your barrel, it's possible but not likely. Try pushing a really tight patch through the bore and see if you have even resistance the entire length, loose spots indicate a ring or buldge. You can also do the fishing line test, run a piece of fishing line through the bore, tape it to the outside of the barrel at the muzzle end and pull it tight from the chamber end. It should touch the side of the bore the entire length, if it does not you have a bent, buldged or ringed barrel. Even at that it doesn't mean the rifle won't shoot, I have an H&R M-12 with a very distinct bend in the barrel but it still shoots very well.

Try some different ammo, sometimes ,22 rifles can be very picky with what ammo they shoot well.

The dealer mounted the scope for me. Leupold QRW rings. It feels and looks fine.

I doubled up some dry patches and ran them down the barrel. It felt the same all the way down until it got close the the breach and it tightened up a little. I going to go do it again with a few more patches to make it tighter and see how it feels.

this is the result from three more ammo types. None of this is match stuff cause i cant find any but at 10 yrds i don't feel it should matter. With groups like this at 100 yrds i couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, LITERALLY

If it's the barrel and not you or the scope ,I would get some lead remover or iosso paste and scub the barrel good. I would run a wet patch down the barrel and let it sit for a while.Then dry patch till clean and use a oil patch next like Kroil oil then dry patch it again and shoot it

If you have lead or a bad carbon ring it takes scrubbing. You cant hurt the barrel cleaning it correctly. You should always use a bore guide.A patch is going to remove neither and it is suppose to be tighter at the muzzel

The bore should be tightest at the muzzle, not the chamber as you mention. Look closely at that. If this is really the case, the barrel may never shoot.

Groups like you're seeing are so bad, I find it hard to believe it's the gun. Do you have another scope you can try? I assume you checked all the mounting screws to be sure they're tight? I wouldn't assume your dealer knows what he's doing.

i pushed a dry patch down the bore and i defiantly got tighter about 5 inches from the chamber. I also noticed that i didn't feel the twist from the rifling until it reached this point.

should you be able to see the rifling in the barrel? I cannot.

Looking closer at the pics i took of my groupings, if thats what you would call them, I noticed that not all of the holes in the paper look round. Some of them have a oval appearance. Im startin to think i got my self a smooth bore!

You can get a carbon ring and lead build up in a few hundred rounds ..Oblong holes ? Might be the bullets not stable at 10 yards Clean it and get some good ammo

1) don't count on a gun shop to do anything correctly, like mounting scopes. They sell guns, and that's basically all they are good for with rare exception.

2) take the entire thing apart, inspect it as you go for anything weird.

3) put it back together with proper torque.

4) get a variety of ammo.

5) quit cleaning the thing, let it get some build up in the bore. My 10/22 shot like absolute shit until I had 200 +/- rounds through it WITHOUT cleaning once. You have a round count somewhere in the hundreds, apparently with excessive cleaning.

6) make sure it is headspaced correctly. It's a factory gun, shit happens with mass production.

If it still shoots poorly, you need to look at other issues.

Cleaning the thing so often isn't helping anything with a rimfire.

I was under the impression that some lead buildup was what made a rimfire consistent.
Oblong holes...if i move back i cant hit the paper

If the bullet holes are oblong then you have a stability problem. See if you can check the twist rate on your barrel. Some rimfires have come with twists other than 1 in 16. Some 17 and 18 twist barrels can have stability issues under certian circumstances.

I can't see it being the ammo. I've never seen any 22 ammo that would post 4 or 5 inch 10 yard groups out of even a decent gun and decent shooter.

I don't know Savage's lineup, is it possible you accidentally ended up with a 22 magnum? I've seen bad groups/oblong holes when people tried to shoot 22 long rifle out of 22 mag guns. The spent cases would probably be coming out deformed at the case mouth.

You sure the gun is not a .22Mag? The 22mag has a larger bore and would shoot like this. If I had a 22 that shot like that at 10yds it would be going back.

Noted. Hope you get this resolved. I ran in circles with an LTR and found out it was two issues that were leading to trouble- neither of which had to do with the factory configuration. One was a slowly breaking scope (didn't diagnose that issue until it literally just came apart internally) and another was a brake that somehow had been machined in a manner that was leading to uneven distro of gasses at the muzzle and was causing an 8 MOA dispersion. I know how frustrating it is.

i have found that my sako P94S lets me know when it needs cleaning when it puts the first shot about 3 to 4 inchs high.
thats normaly after a few 1000 round (often at the most inconvent time) it also only likes remington target and hates all winchester ammo grouping about 3 inches at 50M with them.
the method i use to find what ammo a 22LR likes is to get a box of as many brands as i can find the see what ones will group tight BUT before you try for groups on the next type fut the first 5 rounds into the dirt so that the barrel will have the same type of fouling for the shots you use to find the group size.
this is what my rifle can do with remington target. was a 5 shot group shot in the post sitting position at 50M. its a simulation of a field shoot with a virtical post in place of a tree.

I think it got tight at the breach end because from breach to muzzle there is only about 5 inches of rifling.

Nope, but i did push some dry patches down from the muzzle to see what the bore felt like
